https://www.adnews.com.au/news/advertisers-return-to-foxtel-as-sports-subscriptions-accelerate-out-of-the-pandemicAdvertisers return to Foxtel as sports subscriptions accelerate out of the pandemicFoxtel, with the return of live sports including the NRL and AFL from May, now has nearly two million sports subscribers. Kayo, the streaming platform, has more than 600,000 paid subscribers, up from 542,000 reported early last month. And advertising is starting to bounce back. "We've got more sports subscribers at the Foxtel group than we've had in 25 years," CEO Patrick Delany told a sports showcase virtual event.

Interesting. With all the cuts they made to their deals with each competition by crying poor, I’m sure many would be looking on thinking how convenient.

Not sure if people are still interested in this, seems ok to do during our off-season. I don't' have the NRL ratings (was there a game last night?) There was one AFL game last night, I think it was a finals game, pretty eye-watering numbers:
Thurs Night AFL Cats v Power 7 National: 1.189m, Metro 918k (Melb 497k) 2nd largest Thurs Night Finals Audience ever +34% on same final in 2019, and higher than any week 1 final in 2019. Foxfooty: 303k (237k in 2019) Total: 1.492m, up from 1.11m in 2019. (+34%) Data: Oztam, 7PR

I always say this: these big numbers also translate into bigger sponsorship revenue, it's all connected.

from a practical point of view, we know we can't start the next AL season before January. But its also frustrating. After the AFL and NRL finish, there will be no domestic sports of any significance until mid-December (unless you’re into horse racing).

We're always interested in Kayo numbers, this is from the Sports Industry site on the Thursday night game.
Thursday night final attracted a cumulative audience of 429K across the platforms Foxtel, Foxtel Now, Foxtel GO and Kayo.
With the Fox rating above being 303k, this means the streaming audience was 126k (about 42% of the Fox number).

Ratings for last night's sport (Fri) from Sports Industry tweets Both NRL and AFL increase ratings by around 7% from same finals fixture last year. The Qld ratings for AFL are quite big, 149k is huge (actually beat the NRL on the night). Obviously a successful team helps matters no end. Still I would never have imagined that such a rating was possible.

Say what u want about FTA dying, but there’s still plenty of people who use it. FTA has a role to play, but they need to actually invest in advertising and marketing it. The issue is the networks don’t do a good job of pushing the A-League and the FFA have next to no money to do it.
Given the AFL has largely been based in Qld this year, certainly no surprise it would get a bump, but they have had some highs before when Brisbane won 3 premierships in a row and fell away fast. As was stated, success helps :)

Geez, imagine if the AFL and NRL had semi professional teams and promotion and relegation.
Many on here would have you think their ratings would be quadruple what they currently are.

+xGeez, imagine if the AFL and NRL had semi professional teams and promotion and relegation. Many on here would have you think their ratings would be quadruple what they currently are. Doesn't channel 7 show at least one game of VFL live on the weekends (not sure if it was played this year but certainly has been in the past). That's semi professional Aussie Rules and I assume (without any figures at my disposal) it would get much higher ratings than the fully professional A-League. Why is there so much hatred from some here about any proposed semi-professional national second division? If it is so amature and no one will watch it, why do the naysayers care so much? At worse case it will be just a comp for the old brigade to feel somewhat included in Australian soccer again, at best it may even bring some prodigal fans back to the sport in Australia. Why the ridicule and hatred? Serious question here, I get that a lot of A-league fans hate the "old soccer" but how would it affect you (not targeted only at you Mark BTW) if we had our own national comp linking the NPL with State league and below? There will never be pro/rel between the two so your precious professional soccer is safe.

Pretty sure the overwhelming majority of A-League fans would support this idea and I think you might be a little off about the number of A-League fans who "hate" old soccer too. I guess there are some on both sides who will always look to divide over unify.

I really hope you are right Eldar and my view is probably a bit on the defensive side so apologies if I misrepresent the A-league fans. I guess with every argument its the vocal minority that make the most noise about opposing something. I would love nothing better than new football and old soccer to find at least some common ground but I despair of that ever happening.

Sports ratings from last night (Fri): The most interesting rating there is the NFL one for 23k, presumably in the middle of the night. We can no longer get a modest rating like 23k on Fox. It sort of tells us that football fans have completely deserted Fox, and all that are left are NRL, AFL and probably rugby fans (some of whom watch American sports).

These combined get about 110k a week in the metro areas. The 2019 SANFL Season averaged 34,000, including 98,000 for the Grand Final. The 2019 VFL Season averaged 45,000, including 174,000 for the Grand Final. The 2019 WAFL Season averaged 32,000, including 56,000 folks who tuned in for the Grand Final. Pre shutdown the 2019-20 A-league was averaging 46,000 per week on the ABC (metro, it will have a larger regional audience than any one of the above.) Note that the A-league is covered by Fox and Telstra app. The SANFL has its own streaming service ( https://sanfldigitalpass.com.au/#/) which includes All SANFL League games and one SANFL Women’s match each round are complemented with LIVE commentary, SANFL Reserves and Torrens University Cup U18's including a scoreboard and time clock. The VFL streams one game a week on youtube. All three are streamed on 7plus in their home states.

Ratings from last night's preliminary finals:
AFL Preliminary Final Port Adelaide v Richmond 1,723,000 Seven 1,386,000 (Metro 1,087,000 Regional 299,000) Fox Footy 337,000
NRL Preliminary Final Storm v Raiders 1,224,000 Nine 891,000 (Metro 550,000 Regional 341,000) Fox League 333,000
The NRL finals didn't feature a Sydney or Brisbane team, so they are very good ratings all considered.

Worth noting that the NRL FTA ratings are down considerably, around 20% metro. So, streaming presumably making up numbers there, but we aren't allowed to mock that as an excuse, are we?

All ratings for last night (FTA and Fox). Given both games were on at the same time, it's extraordinary that 3.1 million were watching in total (and that's just counting traditional TV).
Brisbane Lions V Geelong TV Audience:
FTA: Melbourne: 663,000 Brisbane: 165,000 Perth: 141,000 Adelaide: 129,000 Sydney: 48,000
Regional: 337,000
Fox Footy: 331,000
Total: 1,814,000
Penrith V South Sydney TV Audience:
FTA: Sydney: 334,000 Brisbane: 151,000 Melbourne: 36,000 Adelaide: 11,000 Perth: 5,000
Regional: 365,000
Fox Footy: 358,000
