I'm sure Putin is pleased to see a vacancy at the head of the US's cybersecurity defences just as the country goes into the vulnerable transition stage.

The thing I don't understand is the level of fear he engenders in the Republicans. He can say he brought an extra few million to vote this year but in reality he brought double that many democrats and independents out that wouldn't have been bothered voting for Biden against a traditional Republican.

He is invigorating the Democrats and if he continues that will only continue.

Yup, some people are loyal because they're protecting their own interests, others just genuinely fear him (for some reason).

Trump will still be a kingmaker after his presidency. He can just tweet out saying X should be kicked out and X will have a primary challenger straight away.

He will be if they let him. He is like the King with no clothes. If both sides call him out he will still have maybe 10 million followers. Remember  he didn't get 74 million votes - the Republican candidate got the majority of them - he just added a few million on top of that while adding millions more to the Democrat vote.  But not enough to cause trouble except to energise people to make sure he doesn't win. In other word it is up to the Republicans to decide whether they want to be controlled. Long term I don't think they will. Politics is money and the big Republican donors don't want a bar of him. they are happy with a normal life, they don't want disruption.

If the Republicans stick with him it may well give them some short term gains but it will destroy them over time. Long term this may well lead to a middle third party appealing to the more liberal republicans and the more moderate democrats in the middle.

The trouble for the Republicans is that if they fuck Trump off he will almost certainly run as an independent candidate next election and split their vote. Basically the only hope they have is if he dies in the next four years, but even then they'll probably still have his family to deal with.

And that is why they have to call him out now - otherwise it is the slow death of their party. The people that support him will be losing their medical coverage, they are not getting tax cuts, they are not getting wages rises. His policies are hurting the people that were previously disconnected from politics but now support him.

This is the challenge for both the Democrats and Republicans. These people are pissed off for a reason. They have missed out. They go for Trump not because he has the answers but because he says the other guy doesn't and is the cause of their problems. The USA would be better off if the Democrats and the traditional Republicans pointed out that Trump is if anything worse for them than either of the big parties. They both need to address these disaffected voters, Trump will not go away until someone delivers for this group.

To borrow and mangle from Paul Keating - if Trump is the answer it must have been a bloody stupid question.

I'm glad that the transition is finally happening.

America needs to have compulsory voting & our version of the AEC.  It would actually make their elections more democratic.

We're talking about a country that managed to make compulsory mask wearing during a pandemic a violation of human rights.

Trying forcing that lot to vote.

Preferential Voting (or Rank Choice Voting as they call it) is essential too, but both parties would not want that.

Pretty much all over now.  https://www.news.com.au/world/north-america/us-politics/us-attorneygeneral-william-barr-slaps-down-donald-trumps-claim-that-fraud-decided-the-election/news-story/e96ca9563dbd5e0b6f31de19239173b8

Incidentally, when Mr Trump calls for Georgia to “check signatures” – it’s one of his most frequent complaints – he is asking for the impossible.

Under the state’s electoral laws, voters casting ballots by mail have their signatures verified twice – once when they request a ballot, and then again on the return envelope.

Those envelopes are then separated from the ballots and discarded to preserve voters’ privacy. They can no longer be matched to a specific ballot. As mentioned, however, each voter’s signature has already been checked twice already.

Over in Arizona, Mr Ducey posted a lengthy statement pushing back on the President’s rhetoric yesterday.

“I’ve been pretty outspoken about Arizona’s election system, and bragged about it quite a bit, including in the Oval Office. And for good reason,” he said.

“We’ve been doing early voting since 1992. Arizona didn’t explore or experiment this year. We didn’t cancel election day voting as some pushed for – we weren’t going to disenfranchise any voter.

“In Arizona, we have some of the strongest election laws in the country. Laws that prioritise accountability and clearly lay out procedures for conducting, canvassing, and even contesting the results of an election.

“We’ve got ID at the polls. We review every signature – every single one – on early ballots by hand, unlike other states that use computers. Prohibitions on ballot harvesting. Bipartisan poll observers. Clear deadlines, including no ballots allowed after election day.

“The problems that exist in other states simply don’t apply here. I’ve also said all along, I’m going to follow the law. So here’s what the law says. It requires the secretary of state, in the presence of the governor and the attorney-general, to canvass the election on the fourth Monday following the general election.

“This can only be delayed if counties decline to certify their results. All 15 counties in Arizona – counties run by both parties – certified their results.

“The canvass of the election triggers a five-day window for any elector to bring a credible challenge to the election results in court. If you want to contest the results, now is the time. Bring your challenges.

“That’s the law. I’ve sworn an oath to uphold it, and I take my responsibility seriously.”

And this is great.
