For the OP another way of thinking about it
1/3 = 0.333.....
3*1/3 = 3*0.333....
1= 0.9999....

Or for an alternative way of thinking about it - If two numbers are different, you must be able to find a number that sits between the two values.

A > B > C
If A & C are different, you must be able to find a B (in fact, there's an infinite number of B's).

There is no number that sits between 1 and 0.999..., therefore they are equal.
