Did I say it was?

"Talk is growing louder up north that Brisbane Roar are getting serious about plans for a new boutique home ground - and this column believes there are a number of locations being explored.

The most intriguing and inventive option is in Chandler, a suburb 14km south-east of the Brisbane CBD. There are two velodromes at the Sleeman Sports Complex - the new indoor one, named for Anna Meares, and the old outdoor one, which sources in Queensland say could be successfully converted into a football stadium.

But there are several other possibilities, all of them still on the table. One is near the Brisbane Airport, where the prospect of a new stadium has been discussed for years.Another is in Victoria Park, just north of the city, where a golf course is set to be transformed into a 45-hectare green space. And another is in the Logan-Beenleigh corridor, where the Roar have strong political connections. The Roar refused to comment, but there are a perfect storm of circumstances that could see the long-held dream of an alternative to the 55,000-seat Suncorp Stadium finally come true through a public/private partnership. The first is the pending Queensland state election. The second is Brisbane's bid to host the 2032 Olympics. The third is FFA's bid to host the 2023 Women's World Cup - which, if successful, could put Suncorp off-limits to the other codes for several weeks.Football Queensland have made a boutique stadium a strategic priority for the game, while new FFA chief executive James Johnson is a Brisbane boy, and fully understands the lay of the land. Watch this space."

Spoke to another old client/colleague who's at Stadiums QLD, she closer to this kind of stuff. Boondal (not that anyone was suggesting that) and Albion are definitely off the list. Government has plans for Albion Park connected to the Olympic Bid and if not it will go to developers.

She was able to confirm that the old Velodrome at Chandler has definitely been discussed seriously, that's likely why Stadiums QLD was named. Like Waz said, it's still just one of maybe 3 - 5 still on the list. It will come down to politics. She was aware of the links to an airport location but hadn't heard anything about Victoria Park. She did say that she thought some investigation had been done around possible locations along Brisbane Metro, so that could include places like Vic Park. But none of those other locations really involve Stadiums QLD.

Still speculation really but interesting none the less.

iI you look at the old velodrome at Chandler it does fit the criteria of a place where a reconfiguration could be done to save money . It also fits with Fong's comments about Dolphin Oval one day housing a second Brisbane side in the "North" .

“With Dolphin Stadium there already that would be a fantastic location for a second A-League club in the north of the city.
“We’re definitely going to get a second team here but it won’t happen until there is that second viable venue to play out of."

Looks like the Roar could be positioning itself to be a South Brisbane side  .
Not sure I like that ..will wait and see.

Yeah, looking up the Velodrome. The current grand stands seat around 3500. They would need some work of course but it's a starting point. The track is just earth mound covered in concrete and bitumen so that can be removed simply enough. From what I measured on Google Earth, there's 80m between the stands and well over 130m in length so you could definitely get a football pitch in there.

My concern would be around transport. There are around 1500 car parks at Sleeman (plus street parking) and it does have a Park n' Ride on site, so it's at least hooked up to the bus network. It's less then a few minutes from the Gateway Motorway as well. No real train line though.

I'm a Northsider so I'm not sure how that would work for me either. Keep in mind this is just one location. I've heard people mentioning places like commercial hockey club or downey park at Newmarket/Wilston (just hearsay) and if you add Vic Park to the list they could still be looking at inner north options.

Of course, if they did something creative like packaging a car park with family or group memberships for car pooling, I would consider driving to Chandler.

Above Rona Street Station or Exhibition Grounds

It won’t happen in the Roma St area, the area is marked for a covered arena to replace the entertainment centre, not football.

there isn’t enough room for a football stadium in that location, as for exhibition grounds, I believe the buildings around the oval are listed buildings, so I’d rule out the oval area,.

the northern side of the Showgrounds might have worked, but the new car park and the inner city bypass tunnel would cause a few issues

all I know is that it needs to be central, I’m not driving to chandler or into the deep Southside to watch the roar.

I don’t think 2 teams north of the river is a good idea (without a 3rd southern team). Especially if BR use Redcliffe fulltime for a few yrs then the league puts a team there after.

Is Springfield even on the Roar list?

How about Langlands Park? Is Easts Rugby League Club's home ground. On the Eastern Busway, a few hundred metres from Buranda Train Station. Nice and central, on the southside

This would be great for Roar. But we have heard this 100 times before.

I guess the question is what did we all expect to hear?

The State Election is in a few months time, the purpose of this announcement was surely to get in on that! It’s merely a stated ambition at this point - not a plan.

The RSF have asked Chris Fong for a fan forum on the topic but so far he’s being remarkably elusive on it

This 15,694 seat design is what the Strikers proposed for the last round of expansion before Lowy's bidding rules scared them off:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/brisbane-needs-a-boutique-stadium-and-the-world-game-can-deliver-it-20180905-p501uc.html

There's also this 18k seater concept from 2016: http://pompey2j.blogspot.com/2016/01/perry-park-upgrade-brisbane.html
Yeah, 18k seaters, lool, imagine how much is that, now imagine how much is 50k? Like the stadium from australia. I've had occasion to speak with the managers of that stadium and I had asked them, how did they manage to make such a large and perfect stadium? They said if you have a dream you will always reach it haha :) But of course they had a large group of people working in team from Arch 10 that helped him make his dream come true, as I've been told. Yeah, i imagine how hard was the detailing for 18k seaters but I can't even think about how hard was to structuring the 50k seaters oh my god.

Neither club has any money, or any support.

This Stadium was never a go-er either - the prospect of redeveloping Perry Park are next to zero given political and local residents objection to such a move.

Roar are so honest and good with their PR so why should they?

Your attitude represents all that’s wrong with the internet in that you think “it’s all about you” and that other people should work to your timing and not their own ... and if they don’t work to your timing, like a Karen, you’ll take to the internet and let everyone know “me is unhappy” and it’s someone else’s fault, grrrrrr ....

There’s surely a few possibilities here:

(1) Roar are lying and never intended to build a new stadium. Not quite sure why they’d do that but hey, it’s your paranoia not mine.

(2) Roar did intend to build a new stadium but needed the LNP, not Labour, to win the State election.

(3) Roar do intend to build a new stadium and do it in conjunction with Football Queensland who also announced an intent to build a boutique stadium in their infrastructure plans (we surely don’t need two right??).

(4) Roar and FQ both intend to build a stadium and have identified Albion Park as a possible site, which is also a possible site for the Olympic Stadium should Brisbane win it. The possibility of getting a 25,000 seat legacy stadium must be there surely?

Anyone one, and possibly more, of those options can be in play. Typically with projects like this it’s about 5 years from concept fo planning. Major infrastructure is a political minefield and never goes quickly, if a stadium is completed 10 years after the first announcement they’d be going well .... which ironically would fit perfectly with the Olympics - funny that.

If you are old you’ll nearly be dead by the time Roar run out in a boutique stadium of their “own”. That’s life.

Or it’s just lip service. Like I said, where is their PR to keep their fans vaguely updated? We don’t need a lot of waffle from those with orange tinted glasses to protect them. Poor club communications on the progress is unacceptable, particularly on this important matter. The club as a professional entity has a long way to go.

What a fucking joke.

The friggin AFL are unbelievable at how they can continually get money out of governments.  Particularly for a sport played by almost no one in Qld.

They host cricket over summer and i'm led to believe the AFLW is starting in December from next season so the GABBA wouldn't work.

Either way they are undeniably the best in the business at syphoning funds out of all forms of government.

Honesty the AFL have far too much power it seems, but with money comes power I guess. As we have next to no money, it’s a far harder proposition.

As seen with the Home of the Matildas development in Melbourne, it only really went ahead through Rugby’s participation also, even though the real driver is the WWC for our sport. Add in the other hostility that often happens for facilities for our sport (ie. Footscray Park for MV, Pascoe Vale’s challenges with their ground), and it’s certainly less than ideal.

It’s very hard to see us getting significant investment without putting in a lot more effort than some other sports will have to.
