So he’s either written a false article or has no journalistic integrity with zero fact checking or investigation into sources.

Anyway, I'd like to see Janakan explain himself and the clubs stance. Although the are probably anti NSD.

Not having a go at WSW fans by any means but it is pretty obvious that both you guys and MV stand to loose the most if an NSD is every allowed to get up and running in terms of possible fan migration. A lot of the active supporters who seem dissatisfied by the way they are treated may find going back to the "old club" a very appealing option.

WSW and MV have already lost significant numbers of members, not sure a NSD will impact them that much more

Yeah but if the APL is now on a serious push to get value back into their licenses for the owners, part of that strategy would be to appeal to previous customers and try and get them back on board.
An alternative competition, to their monopoly, would only stand in their way.

Can we please put to bed the idea that the club licenses preclude relegation until 2034? Clearly not, as that letter by Gallop to FIFA shows. And in the FA/APL unbundling agreement, FA also expressly retains the right to introduce a pro-rel system at its discretion.

What the license does do is preclude the governing body from kicking a team out of the comp for any random reason, provided they comply with the regulations (Palmer being non-compliant was what allowed the FFA to kick GCU out). Finishing in a relegation spot in a pro-rel system is a totally different matter.

In any case I think the most viable path forward is clear:

A-League spends the next few years expanding to 16 teams with their franchise model (i.e. selling club licenses), but focusing on previously unserved regions. Pick any four out of Canberra, Wollongong, Gold Coast, Hobart, Auckland, maybe Ipswich (which is far away enough from central Brisbane to effectively be its own region).

Meanwhile, the NSD comes into being and spends a few years consolidating itself, also building up to 16 teams, with pro-rel to and from the NPL national play-offs. The teams for this would mainly be existing NPL clubs from the major metro areas, with a few regional clubs from centres that didn't make the cut for the A-League, e.g. Geelong, Sunshine Coast, Townsville. At this point both leagues would have double-round robin seasons of 30 matchdays.

Then, roughly at the end of the current A-League broadcasting contract in ca. 2026, you align the seasons to winter and introduce automatic pro-rel (conditional on promoted clubs meeting minimum A-League criteria, but any team in the hunt for promotion should have done this already), and take a new broadcast contract to market on this basis. Hopefully by this point the A-League will have returned to its former stature, and the NSD will have proven its sustainability so that relegation from the A-League is not a death sentence.

If FA, the APL and the AAFC came together spelled this out as the road map for the next five years it would save us all and the sport as a whole a lot of agony.
