He set us up for the final game better than I think most of us would have predicted. But he completely screwed the pooch in the last game.
Had he gone out and scored first, then Egypt would have needed to take even bigger risks to score twice.
Instead Arnold went for a 0-0, risking them scoring first ,which they did, and then all the pressure was back on us

+x+xHow many chances does this clown get before he gets sacked the FA need to drop the axe RIGHT NOW. Get an international coach who has some tactical awareness Qatar is 12 months away and we still got to qualify i dont want GA around our national team EVER AGAIN ALSO every one of you f**ken C**ts who stood up him, supported him and wanted him in the job i esp say F**K YOU AND F**K YOUR OLD Lady becuz i knew this would happen GOOD NIGHT Strongly disagree. With the fine margins of football, two decisive saves from a very experienced Egyptian overage (?) keeper, denied Australia making the quarters against Brazil. One decisive fumble from correct age Glover, conceded the second goal. I don't think anyone could've done better than Arnie. agreed and sub007's post. We don't know all the ins and out going back to selection time of the squad - wasn't there some good prospects not given clearance by their Clubs for starters ??? We also saw GA wanted to give as many local youth players the go for he didn't use up 2 more over aged player spots that imo should have. I get the rage I'm disappointed as well BUT its not all on him, its a team with the coachs win lose draw. Easy to blame him but we also didn't take our slim chances as well, barring the 2 good game winning saves by their keeper Arzani skied a shot, put another in the keepers hands And a couple of times King should have pulled the trigger. On top of he's not the one out there passing terribly/giving ball away - even though his starting line up was questionable all those players we're getting shut down far too easy in the 1st half, they were running like rabbits and we didn't react quick enough. We had our chances and thats the diff of winning losing the fine margins as mentioned.

+x+xHow did we bottle it when next to nobody expected us to go through before the tournament began? When you compare our squad to Argentina and Spain's, not a single one of our players would make their squads while I don't know much about Egypt. Obviously it's disappointing to go out but I think we did well just to be in a shot of qualifying for the next round going into the last game. However, the players coming through now seem to be better than what we've had in recent years so hopefully in a few years, we will be able to get out of the group at the World Cup or the Olympics. 1. Had zero rotation plan... Played basically all the same players every game despite only 2 days between games. Wales, Metcalfe and genreau were clearly tired by third game, king too. Bacchus who has the biggest engine in the squad meanwhile was only used as a sub twice. 2. Arzani meanwhile, who was electric against Spain, was inexplicably left off despite being subbed early in the first 2 matches. Like if there was anyone you would have started it would have been him. Wales meanwhile starts 3 fucking matches 3. The non selection of actual footballers in kalik, Deni, de Silva and armenaskas makes no sense to me either. Again, Wales meanwhile starts 3 fucking matches 4. Our biggest strength in this side is the centre back partnership of souttar and Deng, and then Arnold goes and shifts Deng to Right back, where he looked like a fish on a bicycle! 5. Despite our players being completely fucked from 3 games in quick succession, arnie leaves 2 subs up his sleeve til the 90th fucking minute.. what is the point of that! 6. In a reduced squad with again little time between games, what was the need for a third keeper?! Should have brought an extra striker as evidenced by what happened with a CB up forward. 7. Arnie had another 2 overage spots up his sleeve that he didn't use. Now look I get it that its good to give the exposure to the young guys blah blah, but think about the effect that say a Ryan and mooy would have made in helping us keep possession of the ball which was our biggest fault this tournament. These 2 guys I think would have helped us get to the knock out stages i believe which would have given even more spotlight to our young stars like arzani, Atkinson, Deng etc to potentially earn a big move. 8. Clearly played for the draw in last game rather than back in our more technical footballers in arzani and piscopo. 9. The selection of genreau and Metcalfe and non selection of devlin and Bacchus in last match.. they were both cooked and blind Freddy could see that Bacchus should have started that game.. the fact Arnold brought him on at half time is an admission of that fact Don't forget Wales starting 3 matches.

The A L players were every bit as good as players playing overseas. One point is that all three of our opponents were not clinical around goal either. Is this coincidence, or the result of an organised and cohesive defensive unit?

I expect Egypt/Spain/Argie supporters are whinging why their youth didn't smash us up, especially Spain/Argentina. Was it our defensive structure against Spain/Argies as mentioned ? their coachs tactics ? our do or die efforts. Again its the fine margins for all.

If you can imagine that this team would have more possession and play on the front foot more with more courage then it dispells the idea that the standard we produced is mostly because of the players.

My other concern was after the (very good) win over Argentina, suddenly there's all this press about "We're here to win the Gold", etc, as if getting out of the group was a mere formality. My comment to a friend at the time was "Now watch us lose our next two games and get eliminated". :(

Did anyone actually have any expectations pre tournament with that squad? Personally I thought we would be lucky to get a point. I don't like Arnold, but to have us go so close to getting out of what was supposed to be the group of death was a great result. A draw yesterday and we would have advanced. The only question I have is why didn't Piscopo play?

As I said in the other thread, I’m not defending Arnie’s set-up against Egypt as I am also disappointed we played for a draw and didn’t set out to win the match.
I will say again that as much as some people are wishing for Arnie to be sacked, no one is offering any realistic alternatives. Who else do you think would have done a better job at:
A) Qualifying for the Olympics for the first time in over a decade
B) Earning 3 points in that group of death
The other managers who had the job in the past didn’t even qualify us for the tournament. So at a bare minimum, Arnie is by far the most successful option we’ve had in the role in over a decade.
Again, I’m not taking anything away from last night’s disappointing performance, however it feels like the ‘Arnie Out’ crowd aren’t living in reality right now in terms of available options for the job.

If he had set us up to win from the get go, we would lost. The only reason we looked better in the second half is because Egypt was able to sit back so it was only natural we would look better. They would have scored a couple in the first half if we were more open. Going for the draw was the right call, and im sure 98% of other nations would have done the same.

It's Arnie derangement syndrome. We could've got out of the group and people would still demand he be sacked when we eventually get knocked out later in the tournament.

Would it though ? We need to have the players all round the park capable of retaining possession in the first place let alone having the intent of being on the front foot. We all saw what occured when he was in charge - a different front cover but ended up with 0 in the big picture. (excl AC) thekingmb, agree what did we expect ? I said it here or elsewhere I think many high too high expectations. I'm not knocking our blokes but I never thought, oh were going to make it out of the group. Just put in a great effort fellas play for the shirt and us, I feel they did with a number of setbacks (the yellows set the last game). There are a few players I rate and others not and others say otherwise. Bowden, were lacking a number of "realists" here, they get pegged/knocked back here, I recall a saying by a very talented sportsmen of ours sometime ago, your ambition far outweighs your talent. Its not just about Arnie its about our whole product, its getting better but its not there yet. Foz would have his POV and some here will jump up and down and agree and others will say what a DH. Normal stations :) everyone has an opinion.

+xThis is football in this country. It's all about fighting national team spirit, valiant losses and 'next time'. In the meantime, we'll watch the A-League, get overexcited about young players who are 'the next big thing'. We will hype them up too much, they'll go to Europe on hope without much senior experience and then they'll probably get injured for a while adjusting. Might get loaned out a bit, might come home again. They'll probably turn in to solid pros, but certainly not stars. We'll get up at 2am to watch Middle Eastern qualifiers I'm 50 degrees. We might scrape through and qualify for a World Cup. When the Cup comes we will be hopeful, yet probably lose our group games, but it's okay. Because we'll show fight and character. But hey, we qualified! Remember when we couldnt? Didn't you know that that's our victory?! And so I'll be hurt and frustrated again, and I'll wait for next time. Like a toxic relationship, that's the cycle of being an Australian football fan. It's always the hope that kills. ..the boys tried their best. No denying that. Massive question marks over Arnie's squad management and tactics. This was ALWAYS our must win game. This reads like the voiceover for a McDonald's ad that would air during the World Cup...
There are only two intellectually honest debate tactics: (a) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s facts, or (b) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s logic. All other debate tactics are intellectually dishonest - John T. Reed

Arnie out is a bit much for me…but some serious mistakes were made. Namely not rotating the squad. Someone else mentioned it, he should’ve been treating the Egypt game as the main one to focus, rather than the Spain game.
Secondly, JRB up front was a disaster. Sure for the last 5 minutes when it’s desperation time, why not. But it should’ve been a last resort, not a strategic move.

At last, someone saying how it really is. Well said fella. we looked even money to equalise 2nd half until the big guy came on up front then looked out of ideas. 2 great saves by their keeper and it could have been different. Who put the big guy up front? Was it not Arnie? So you accept we had one good period where he corrected his initial error with subs before looking "out of ideas" coz of his very next decision? Who chose Glover and some 6th division keeper? Was it not Arnie? We may well have equalised without that cock up. We looked better for a while in the 2nd half because Tilio and Arzani started to play their own game not Arnie's. The changes did make an impact but he lost his nerve AGAIN and decided to play with a CB as a striker. His ultimate plan became to play desperate 80s football with a bunch of young players who only ever look good with the ball at their feet in space. Saying we didn't expect to get out of the group is also a massive copout. Losing your nerve on the chance you created by catching a team cold in game1 and getting a lot of luck is worse than if we had just lost the first two games 3-0. We have a fair few CMs of similar standard allowing us to manage the tournament with rotations. Instead Bacchus, Devlin and Piscopo barely got on the pitch if at all and he ran Genreau and metcalf into the ground in the heat 3 times in a week. Sometimes managers get the balme when players perform poorly but this one really IS down to Arnie and it's the 4th tournament he has done it in

for the record I've never been in the anti-Arnie brigade. I like his passion for Australian Football and begrudgingly respected his Sydney FC side. I also actually prefer a bit of pragmatism than the all out suicidal football of Ange too.
However, he is a massive failure in tournaments and he has had more chances at them than anyone else I can think of

+x+xHow did Egypt beat the over-rated Olyroos???? African champions perhaps. Not bad considering the quality of opposition in Africa. Not saying we couldn't have done better but it's ignorant to think Egypt were a team we could have easily beaten. We didnt have to win, we only had to draw.... all the pressure was on them to come out and we tactically got destroyed you got blame the man in charge

+xContract ends after the 2022 WC. Pay him out get someone else waste of time let him take the Socceroos to Qatar (if we make it) we wont get more then 1 point and we will most likely bottom the group Every tournament from Asian cups, ACLs and Olympics this bloke has under preformed but some how like a cockroach he manages to stay in the job. There is no 'league' in national football it is only TOURNAMENTS why do we have a manager who is useless (proven to be) in tournaments? The FA should of sacked him after the last Asian cup but this has to be the last straw - no wonder the bloke lasted 5mins in Japan any decent level he bottles

Bruv how many times have i heard this BS excuse he f**ked the Asian cup TWICE in 2007 he has the BEST line up of players for that tournament so dont give me this he didnt have the players BS he has proven even with players he doesnt know wtf he is doing In the last Asian cup he under-preformed - i mean bloke lost TO F**KEN JORDAN. Anyone defending this bloke deserves the shit we got served up last night It isnt like he is sum local on the budget manager he is incredibility well paid and has dont NOTHING of note to be worthy of the job and on top of that the football he plays is f**ken shit.

+x+xHow did Egypt beat the over-rated Olyroos???? African champions perhaps. Not bad considering the quality of opposition in Africa. Not saying we couldn't have done better but it's ignorant to think Egypt were a team we could have easily beaten. Arrogant more like it.

The squad he took had some baffling selections like he didn't even watch the A-League all year

+xHe set us up for the final game better than I think most of us would have predicted. But he completely screwed the pooch in the last game. Had he gone out and scored first, then Egypt would have needed to take even bigger risks to score twice. Instead Arnold went for a 0-0, risking them scoring first ,which they did, and then all the pressure was back on us Your fucking joking. The damage was done when he selected Connor O'Toole for the Spanish trip for fucktards. How he picked half that squad I don't now, then he took no strikers and had to throw on a centre back in a major tournament, he trashed all his goodwill with that move. Never used Piscopo, didn't even put watts up front or try anything, no back ups for left and right back, fucking awful selection of players, and we lost because of it. Shit off the field, shit on the field, that's how legacy from this Olympics.

By all accounts Piscopo had an ankle injury in training so never featured. Ryan at this stage has just had surgery so was unlikely to ever be considered and may miss our next qualifiers.
As an outsider when Langerak said he didn't want to travel because of family concerns I would have talked to him about being an overage player at the Olympics in Japan where he is based and see what happens with him in the next few months.

+x+x+xHow did we bottle it when next to nobody expected us to go through before the tournament began? 9. The selection of genreau and Metcalfe and non selection of devlin and Bacchus in last match.. they were both cooked and blind Freddy could see that Bacchus should have started that game.. the fact Arnold brought him on at half time is an admission of that fact Don't forget Wales starting 3 matches. haha

I do agree that he got squad selection wrong. Should have picked another striking option. Took too many CM’s. Mcgree, devlin, baccus, Metcalfe, genreau is too many.
