At no point did I say that the 2nd division shouldn't receive money from from the first tier.  I said it shouldn't receive money from the FA.  If the professional comps want to cross fund I don't give a damn if they do or they don't.

I agree with this

To some degree I agree with the sentiment that the proposed second division should be self - funded (I actually think the 1st division should ALSO be self funded btw) and not reliant on FA funds which is what the whole separation aimed to achieve - unless Im mistaken? I do however think that a flight/accommodation fund (whether that is directly paid for or at the least facilitated by FA in a collective bargaining group arrangement) would help set up a second division for success for the first few years and at 1-2mil would be an "investment" by the FA rather than a hindrance to their support of the national teams programs.

Clearly my comments weren't well voiced.  I see the 2nd div and 1st div as part of the same thing - an independent group within the whole football group of interests.  It's up to the people/clubs involved to sort out their own relationship in respect of funding and other interactions with each other - with an oversight from the FA (that they pay for) on regulatory matters etc.

What I do not want to see is that this small self-interested group draw money from the rest of the game.  Just no!  You cannot use national junior rego fees to pay for flights for players who demand money to perform in front of a paying public.  It must never happen.

That they have seeded competitions in the past? Well I don't really know the extent of this.  Even with the A League launch they got Foxtel to invest in a concept professional competition rather than hit up the Broken Hill West Panthers for a donation.  Philips gave up the cash for the NSL start as I recall not J.U.S.T juniors.  Same thing with 2nd Div.  NOT a cent from the rest of the game.  Pro/Semi Pro Clubs want to launch a comp that we can all get behind.  This is great.  If they want me to pay then I will at the gate, but never at registration.

W League is funded by the Lowy family.  The FA funds individual players who qualify as Matildas like the Cricket does with their contract players.  I am completely against this too.  They should be paid by their Clubs for representing their Clubs and by the FA for representing the FA in International competition.

Can we not just embrace the concept that each and every competition should be self-supporting and not rely on cross funding from people whose only connection is that they also kick a round ball?

The APL should only look after professional competitions.

Any other national leagues and competitions should be the responsibility of the FA until they become professional.

The state based NPL competitions could be transferred across to the FA if they are to become part of the elite competitions with P/R.

All other football should be locally controlled with in the states.

There was an ad for the Paramount streaming service the other day, there was very quick image of the W-League at the very end of the ad.

Sad news to lose an OG, I remember seeing a football show on fox pre-Aleague with Andy Paschalidis talking about adding the new league on top of the existing NSL but I can't remember if he was for it or against it.

Whilst nostalgia is great with someone like Robbie, the sport really has overtaken him tbh. His constant criticism of the curriculum before it even had developed any players was a prime example of it, not to mention how he went after Ange to get his mate the national team job, lastly he wasn't able to offer any meaningful discussion or analysis and instead would pigeon hole an irrelevant story about his playing days in a lot of circumstances.

10 and paramount is a great chance to give new younger talent a chance that more fits our demographics for example brosque and cornthwaite have both showed they have a lot of potential.

You need a mix, but most people we have who are characters end up getting hammered by fans. Harps is a great character and everyone is always laying into him for some reason, same for archie.

In Australian football we have a tendency to attack our own rather than unite. Rather than getting behind Speed, Bosnich, Kosmina, Slater, Harper we attack them and always think that the grass is greener on the other side. This negativity is terrible for the game. Let's get behind Paramount and stop attacking our own and turn over a new leaf.

I disagree. These presenters fulfil a vital role in football. That means they should be open to public scrutiny. Most complaints are not personal but rather about their ability to the job well. For example, Slater is great at talking about his experiences as footballer and has some great stories, but when commentating he is unpleasantly Sydney biased. Archie is a perfect fit for that larrikin role, he has plenty of personality, but he struggles to voice his thoughts in a coherent way.

To be fair, other sports also do this. I always see people complaining about Phil Gould in Rugby League.

Also if someone does their job well no one seems to complain ala Hill, Peacock, Mel, Les, etc

Interesting article in today's Age.
TEN is publicly stating that they will have a look at the NRL rights - I thought that was not allowed under this new broadcast deal?

https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/nine-to-face-fight-for-nrl-rights-as-v-landys-seeks-to-capitalise-on-tv-stability-20210805-p58gbc.html

Nine to face fight for NRL rights as V’landys seeks to capitalise on TV stability

ViacomCBS and Ten executive vice-president Beverly McGarvey said in an interview with this masthead this week that the network would look at the NRL rights.
“Well, we have always said that we will look at all sports on a tactical basis, which remains the case and continues to be the truth. I think the interesting thing now is the tactical basis on which we examine the opportunity has moved,” she said.
“Every time the big sports come around, we have a really good look at them. These things only come around once every four or five years so you’ve got to do a good bit of analysis on anything.”

I think Beverly McGarvey was also the one who said they were focused on making the A-League the number one comp in Australia.
Would having the NRL rights help with aim?

There is no way Nine will lose the rights, it rates to well for them and they have the long established relationship. They will pay over the odds if they need to. Especially because it will basically leave them without a major winter sport

I wouldn't underestimate ViacomCBS. They are on a bit of a spending spree at the moment and appear to be willing to spend big to grow their streaming services. In the states they just signed a deal with South Park for 6 years for US$900M (AU$1.22bn).

I wouldn't underestimate ViacomCBS. They are on a bit of a spending spree at the moment and appear to be willing to spend big to grow their streaming services. In the states they just signed a deal with South Park for 6 years for US$900M (AU$1.22bn).

True, but Fox extended their deal last year in the middle of the first lock down, so the STV part is locked in for another 4 or 5 years.
I think it's just the FTA component that's coming up.
TEN regularly gets beaten by the ABC, so they definitely need something to boost their fortunes, but they will have to spend big to take the rights off Nine.
