Yes. An arm held horizontally out in the air and getting the ball is a clear hand ball pen. Every day of the week.

Did the referee make a clear and obvious error by not seeing it in real time?

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Behich is alwys shit on pitches like this. he's that tiny looks like he gets bogged in the pitch. Should have let Mabil take the ball off him and up that wing much better.

Leckie is shot. He's played RB at the end of his career and no you have him playing like a striker again no wonder he cant remember what to do with it.

Jeggo and Irvine much better combo with Hrustic linking in. But still such a weak midfield

I think if Duke is on the field, you probably do put more crosses into the box, but all the crosses were from such terrible positions, it was Holger-esque football. The one that actually came from a good position gets headed in. We looked like we tried playing through the middle a bit more in the second half and not just swinging in aimless crosses but also it felt like very sterile dominance as playmaker mentioned above. We actually were good in our transitions and looked dangerous at times when the Chinese made mistakes but just could not finish. I’m at the end of my tether with Leckie, he makes decent runs but he just cannot finish. Given how many goals he bangs in locally, I understand why people think Maclaren should be selected, but he does absolutely nothing at international level, he just isn’t up to it. Especially if when he comes on we go back to swinging in aimless crosses.
Grant and Behich were disappointing for me, bad crossing positions and bad crosses themselves. Is it part of the orders from Arnold to get crosses in from anywhere or are the wingers just not really creating space for them to run into deeper positions? We see Grant get right into the box for Sydney generally.
I thought Jeggo/Irvine/Sainsbury/Degenek were fairly quiet (besides the handball and the blow up at the end) but maybe this is a good thing in a defensive sense at least, they just got the ball moving.
Hrustic was trying things but I thought he had some sloppy moments too, that’s even accounting for expecting your #10 to have lower pass completion stats
Ryan was solid enough.
Subs didn’t really do anything of note I thought, Maclarens a sense was notable though, and I thought Karacic was lazy in defence when he came on and his crossing wasn’t any better than Grants.

I was going to comment on player selection in general before the game. Arnold has talked for quite a while about building depth, but what’s the point if you aren’t going to use it? Granted that if we make the World Cup, players will have to be used to playing multiple games in a short space, but also I think when we have a relatively evenly balanced squad talent wise, we can afford to be smart about it e.g. Irvine and Behich were particularly singled out for playing badly in the last match day but they were 2 who probably get through the most running, and also both played almost 180 min across the two legs. You’d expect your CBs to play 180, but if we have players of equal/almost equal talent sitting on the bench, why not use them (and give them the exp)? Grant can play 90 in one match, Karacic 90 in another. Same for Behich/Elder, same for Irvine/Mooy, Hrustic/Rogic (for example anyway). Of course there are other factors of play too, picking the right group of players that complement each other’s strengths, picking players in form and with minutes, maybe some players are on a confidence streak and taking advantage of that etc. I’m sure there’s more thinking that goes into it than we are made aware of as fans, but we can only comment on what’s in front of us, and it has been disappointing.

The only positives I can think of are that the next internationals are not as far away as they would usually be (Jan instead of March) so don’t have 4 months of stewing over these mediocre results, and that next time around we’ll hopefully see players back in form, or at least with more minutes under their belt. Based on the game happening now, Japan 1 Oman 0, looks like we are going to have to win every game from here on out if we want auto qualification

I think Arnold gets more of a bad wrap purely cos hes coached the socceroos to 2 incredibly dissapointing Asian Cup outcomes, where as Ange won it first go.

As fas as the world cup goes it looks like hes heading for the playoff like Ange did, perhaps thats simply our level?

Agree that the players now aren’t at the level of the 2005 players, but even with the players we have now a more tactically astute coach will get more out of them as a team than Arnold is.

Exactly how I feel. We know it's not the golden generation but there's plenty of untapped quality there. They do well at their clubs at good levels. The players coming through are more exciting than the established ones. It's a dynamic situation anyway. In 5 years many will be retired so it's all about keeping it as well oiled as possible.

Arnold didn't manage the team well in 07. The 2019 Asian Cup was a scrappy affair and he's been fortunate to get this far with the same naive set up and inflexibility during games.

We keep playing this stupid possession based, back passing style. It's so slow and harmless. Every time we play a quick transition or use the space astutely it seems the players flick over to their club style and create chances. I just want to see them under someone with a bit more bite in attack and a zero tolerance policy on laziness or lack of club minutes.

GA doesn’t have much quality to work with his starting XI.

Greek Super League
SPL
Bundesliga 2
Serie B
Japanese second division
Serbian Superliga
A-League which hasn’t even started

Apart from Hrustic, there’s not much playing well consistently at a top level.

Our team at the moment is stronger than the class of 2012-13 and 16-17. We should be comfortably getting past teams like China and we didn't.

So far Arnie hasn't exceeded or arguably met many expectations. Bad result at the Asian Cup, disappointing way to go out at the Oympics and looking like a failure to qualify automatically for the World Cup.

Wins against Taiwan and Kuwait are great but needs to back it up when there is the true test.

As it stands we'd need to win all 4 to automatically qualify or hope Saudi/Japan drop some points and we can get through with 3 wins and 1 draw.

Based on the fact we comfortably got past them only a matter of weeks ago, they being a pretty awful footballing team and them being historically underachievers. We had no excuse to not defeat them. Saudi and Japan okay they are good teams, but teams like China are completely insipid.

Fucking Irvine can’t even strike a ball at goal 2 games in a row FFS. Maybe if Atkinson was in squad instead of Leckie & Elder on instead of Behich they would have created more than just ‘hopeful’ balls into box.

China are shit. Therefore we look pretty shit now too.

Very disappointed with the result against China. We were right on top, with China almost giving up. However, the penalty against Jeggo was warranted. The pen  changed their mentality.

From someone giving away what seemed like an innocuous free kick (Hrustic ?), it was decisive.

I'm not going to criticise Arnie, which tends to be  a knee jerk tendency from fans, as his game plan was sound given the cattle  he had  at his disposal.

However, to select Matt Leckie, 15 goals from 68 Socceroo caps, and not match fit, was perplexing? Leckie has plenty of  all round attributes, but converting goals isn't one of them.

Once again against Saudi and China, he failed to convert chances from reasonable positions around goal. We have all watched this recurring scenario over the last decade.

If two coaches, Ange and Arnie, both believe  Leckie has been as good relative to  other Aussie forwards  as his selection favouritism warrants, and he is deemed  by successive coaches as one of  the three best players in Australia in the front attacking  line, maybe we aren't good enough to qualify for World Cups?

This point was elucidated last night.

It is a very fair comment.

The worrying thing is that Saudi look a lot better than the Saudi team in the last 2018 WCQ campaign.

The problems with Arnie's subs is that they couldn't make any impact in the game or even made it worse.
