To sum up, we're doing a hell of a lot better than BBL (which is about 75% down from its pre-Covid highpoint) and AFLW (about 66% down). But strangely the NBL is weathering the storm the best, at about 4800 per game, down from 7000 pre-Covid. Strange because you'd think people would be more averse to indoor events at smaller capacity venues. But they do also seem to be on a growth trajectory at the moment.

It will be interesting see how AFL and NRL manage. They will probably have less fixture disruption to contend with barring another massive outbreak but may see a residual drop due to Covid paranoia.

Hard to how the A league recovers. I expect NRL and AFL attendances to be close to the normal.

When a business has fallen like the A league has, it I'd very very difficult go come back. The football had been horrible today mediocre ands the public appear to haven given up on the competition. 

I agree with those calling for the radical change. Nothing short off a rebrand and rebuild will do. I've come to around to three view that's pro/rel is an absolute necessity as part of that.

AFL I think will hold up well, but NRL crowds are a lot flakier so it will be interesting to see if there's any drop-off there. They likely won't have to deal with closed borders and masses of re-arranged fixtures though.

First things first they need to get the active fans back on board and do everything they can to embrace tifos and the atmosphere that makes our game unique to any other code in Aust. I know it’s hard in a nanny state society but at least it will bring fun back

It's the kind of game that should have been on a Saturday night though, not buried in mid-week. All due to the Covid postponements of course.

How many marquee fixtures does the A-League have? I would say:

3 x Big Blue
3 x Sydney derby
3 x Melbourne derby
3 x Vic vs Adelaide
3 x F3 derby

Add in some more Melbourne and Sydney derbies (eg WU vs MV, Sydney vs Macarthur) and you have a decent slate of games that could screen in the Saturday night FTA slot.

Not sure many Aussies know but this is NOT unique to football....  The Lowys just told you all it was 17 years ago to get you all on as consumers. Check out some Euro and South American Basketball, Volleyball, even Handball ffs.... its called club culture.. You poor fools thought active support was part of the sport instead or realising it was an expression of club culture and tribalism......

Dissapointed with the Sydney match crowds given it was at Leichhardt, even if they were playing 'away' (likely it wasn't advertised enough). City's crowds couldn't beat Western Sydney's from mid-week and both Macarthur's and Western United's crowds are unsurprising as usual.

Yes that's correct and something Mono ignores. Yes there are occasional outbreaks of tribalism in Australia (Australia Uruguay etc) but, in general, we couldn't be arsed getting too fired up.

Cricket has KFC  bucket hats and guys dressing up like Richie Benaud ... AFL has streamers and pom poms and "Collingwood clap clap clap" Even the tennis this year, OK it's not flares and posters of Graham Arnold giving oral but its still fairly active.  It is NOT unique to soccer, even in this country, in fact for 27 years of the NSL it was criminalised and vilified as much as possible and then, sold as a wonderful vibrant way of supporting your franchise when lowy came in????? WTF.?

The Ultra style of support has its origins in football, making its way to Europe following trip by Hadjuk Split  to South America and the fans adopting the intense support style, with chants, banners flags etc.  

It may have bled into other sports in the century that has followed (often through the football team being part of a wider "sports club" that has basketball/handball teams too), but it is football culture first and foremost and it wouldn't exist if not for football.  

Oh I see, so Aleague support is more the "Ultra" style, not the "Casual" scene of ol blighty.... Not sure what the wikipedia history lesson is trying to prove but all Im trying to say is you have to have a culture where the love of the club is the be all and end all of a fans existence before you worry about people not attending because there arent enough colourful flags and singing... Those pioneering Hajduk Split crazies, would drink beer in the curva, rain hail or shine even if there where only 5 of them together ... do you think they would EVER say, "were not going to the match today, crowds are down and not enough streamers" Active support is a consequence of football culture NOT the propegator of it... FFS
