+x+x+x+x+xThought that although Atkinson started nervous he is getting better, still very young. Rowles and Wright both good. Mooy frustrates me, although in BPO he is usually little more than a traffic cone, 8 out of 10 passes are back passes and when striking usually takes an unnecessary touch and gets shut down instead of snap striking, in this game his ability to calm the team and retain possession were exactly what was needed. Also wish he could slit through a splitting pass more. Leckie isn't a straight out striker, way better on the wing. Boyle shocked Peru, pity Arnie couldn't unlock him in the second. A cagey game in which we reverted a bit to the Australia of 20 plus years ago in terms of long balls and physicality, but that was what was required to disrupt the Peruvians own attacking mentality and as a result they rarely got into their own rythm. Damn they have some good players, but they could rarely find their own rythm Mooy was the best player on the park. He was back to his best. For a long period in the second half in particular, he was controlling the centre of the field and setting the tempo and setting up plays, including forward thrusts. The Peruvian press recognised him as the best on the park. A big part of the reason Peru´s good players could not find their rhythm is because Mooy was dictating the Rythm (whilst less technical players like Irvine and Leckie were working their asses off to close off space and breaks) If Mooy brings that to the world cup, it really strengthens us a lot. Also a shout out to Boyle for his defensive efforts. He was threatening in the first half, but in that second half he worked really hard to get back. I had never before recognised that part of his game. Mooy was not really back to his best because of his lost speed (or is it just that he is still getting his fitness level up maybe). I saw him not even try to run down players or get back when they got past his line of defence a few times when I expected him to. It was Mooy at his tactical best though I will say. His involvement went so far towards letting us play our game instead of constantly defending with backs to the wall like we have been against foot gifted teams. I think Mooy deserves the praise he is getting for his effort, contribution, and effectiveness. His ability to create havoc in the middle defensively worked beautifully with the efforts of others further forward who also applied pressure and chased. All up it was a really good tactic to employ against Peru and I will happily concede that the responsibility for that belongs to Arnie. The responsibility for the success of that tactic sits with the players who played like it mattered and earned it. Mooysi has never had speed - lack of match fitness at times yes but he's never been quick to back track even whilst at BHA days. He's great at reading the game in turn anticipates great but he's done once turned depending who is opposing him from my perspective. I've never agreed with this proposition. His laconic running style can make him look slow but he's fast enough when it matters. I was lucky enough to be sitting in Row D when Oz played France in Russia and the following happened right in front of me. Leckie (or Risdon) dwelt overlong on the ball when he had an easy pass to Mooy, got closed down by Griezmann, and lost the ball on the edge of our third. Mooy actually had time to roll his eyes before chasing down Griezmann and hitting him with a thunderous tackle. Mooy was easily man of the match that day against a midfield featuring Kante and Pogba. We were so unlucky to lose that day - they got a penalty they shouldn't have and we were denied a clear cut penalty 3 minutes from the end when TWO of their players were holding down Jedinak at a corner. We could easily have won, yet they went on to win the tournament. Just like Italy in 2006. no worries mate, on a given day :) His reading of the game is his key no matter what, yer I saw him track back and recover a bit during his Hudders/BHA days but he didn't do it game in game out like I see some other top flighters/midfielder workers. Yer Thanks Enzo he did bulk up and needed to.

+x+x+xI've seen a lot of YT videos today about the game - mostly in Spanish. I must have seen the same one somewhere where the Peruvian pundits laughed at us! Another video where Peru fans thought they would walk it in! Another one, which I'm getting really fed up with, was Mark Schwarzer stating how the Socceroos would likely lose, because we are a really weak team compared to his amazing high quality Golden Generation teams. Sorry, Mark, but your amazing GG Socceroos did no better qualifying against a South American team in 2005 than today! Both Socceroo teams won by penalties. Also, given there are four facets of a keeper's play: 1. Shot stopping 2. Coming off one's line and commanding the penalty box. 3. Playing as sweeper with one's feet. 4. Distribution by throwing and rolling the ball. Australia has improved immeasurably as a team since Mark's retirement, because Matt Ryan is better at 2, 3 and 4 than Mark, and similar quality at 1. So our keeping for the Socceroos has been better since Mark retired! Expert pundit decentric has to get his nasty little digs in at the golden generation- is that really necessary? Schwarzer was a better keeper than Ryan- just. I'd put Schwarzer head and shoulders above Ryan. That's not to say Ryan's no good - he's excellent, but we've always produced quality keepers. Schwarzer was extra special when you consider the entirety of his career. He was always number one and almost single-handedly kept Boro in the EPL for two or three years. As for his penalty saving... Saved Australia twice in penalty shootouts- Canada in 93 and Uruguay in 05. Twelve years apart- amazing career.

Am I the only one who is happy at the result but unhappy at the reprieve Arnie will now get for his tactical genius. We are royally fucked once the WC starts. Unless Arnie has a massive shift in his thinking, it’s going to be embarrassing.

+xAustralia faced Peru in a penalty shoot-out last night for a place at the World Cup... Australian keeper Andrew Redmayne noticed that Peru's keeper had instructions on his water bottle 👀 Redmayne threw the bottle over the advertising boards 😂 Incredible shithousery 👏 Throwing to the stand sounds more abrasive. He just put it away to avoid tripping. https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/socceroos/elite-redmaynes-cheeky-tactic-revealed-amid-peru-penalty-meltdown/news-story/50a386bef9e0be89b80b8cb8daf7f97d

Unless Arnie has a massive shift in his thinking, it’s going to be embarrassing. I think we will be in for a shock if we don't improve, even the Peru game via the pens has hidden some key flaws this team which our opponents didn't take advantage of enough. From watching the game in full again, we really created only 2 goal scoring chances which came in the last 5 minutes of regular time and Peru were surprisingly reactive in key moments especially Atkinson who was on a yellow card from the 12th minute. I worry we focus too much on results and less on footballing outcomes and problem why they come back to hurt when it matters the most.

Talk about focusing more on outcomes than the process of what happens in the game, this is a great piece by Ante Jukic via ESPN. When will we learn beyond just the result, maybe that's why we are naive at this level? https://www.espn.com/soccer/australia-aus/story/4685958/australia-has-faith-in-socceroos-but-arnolds-side-gives-country-little-reason-to-believe-in-them

Won't happen, will support the team wholeheartedly through the tournament, but cannot wait for him to be gone.

I do think Arnie has evolved just a teensy bit in the last six months, but maybe through circumstance rather than design.
I'd rather he was gone but you can't do it now. If the players have confidence in him then he has to stay. Look at what happened when we changed coaches after Ange left. We went back to the conservative mould and bowed abjectly out of the tournament.
It'll be just as hard this time but continuity is needed, and hopefully some injection (and belief) in youth. Arnie HAS TO test the young brigade in friendlies.
And after the WC we need to move on to someone who gets modern football.

+x+xFair points about Schwarzer. I couldn't stand him in his his early 2000 Socceroos days. Bear in mind he's become a journalist and reporter to this kind of wording is used to get a reaction. He did achieve things. I think the GG as a collective feel very very good about how they were as a team. The nostalgia may go to their heads a bit in interviews and the comparison with the current bunch who performed poorly in parts allows themselves to be elevated. Just about any player that turns pundit is going to start attracting criticism when doing that job, with the obvious exception if they go the Bozza route and outright entertain people. I think it's best that people screw their heads back on and judge what a footballer does by his football, and what a media pundit does by his punditry. He wasn't on the optus floor while he was in Kaiserslautern now was he, nor was he keeping 151 premiership clean sheets in the commentary box. Can't handle pressure, lol. Some big calls being made in the pressure cooker environment of anonymous online forums Anonymous online forumite labels differing opinion as "made in pressure cooker of anonymous online foruns". LOL. Who knew.

He doesn’t have the acumen at that level. FFA need to open the purse strings and employ a quality coach with tactical nous. Arnies call to arms was “ play Australian “. I agree re the youth, but he doesn’t have a good track record in this regard re the NT.

If they were gracious they would let others make that determination. It is also in the best interests for Australian football not to denigrate a current Socceroo cohort trying their hardest for our country. Football has a precarious standing in Australia at this point in time.

As I've observed the rest of the game via replay, after viewing the replay of the first half, in the second half we were still slightly the better team, but Peru started to create chances.
What really surprised me was in extra time, 90 -120 minutes, we only had about 1 - 2 shots on goal, compared to Peru's 4-5. I really expected us to run over the top of them, but I think more of our players cramped up and seemed fatigued. Moreover, the Peruvian subs probably provided more impact than ours.
Maclaren was also starved of service.
I reluctantly admit Peru were probably better in extra time. Overall, I think we deserved to win prior to the penalty shoot out though, based on the match in normal time.

I can see him erring more on the youth side by November. But over all, I don't think he's good enough for what we need to advance.

+xAm I the only one who is happy at the result but unhappy at the reprieve Arnie will now get for his tactical genius. We are royally fucked once the WC starts. Unless Arnie has a massive shift in his thinking, it’s going to be embarrassing. The organisation and structure of Australia when Peru had the ball was superb. Also, the 6 second period in the Transitions, when we lose possession or regain it, Defensive and Attacking, were well organised too. Arnie deployed a flat midfield 4-4-2 shape when they had the ball, evolving to a 4-3-3 attacking midfield triangle as we regained possession and built up into the middle of the pitch. Arnie also had Irvine changing position very effectively in the different formations for the different phases of play. He sat next to Mooy in the 4-4-2 shape when Peru had possession. Then Irvine quickly moved into a line with Hrustic to create twin number tens when we regained possession and advanced up the pitch in the attacking midfield version of the 4-3-3. It takes a very good coach to achieve this effective team organisation at international level having limited time with the players. Ange doesn't work like this, but the consensus is the foundation of any team needs to be the defensive structure. I think it has really benefitted the Socceroos having been in camp and Arnie having had a good prolonged coaching stint.

Thank for posting, Barca. He writes informative articles. He has run excellent coach education sessions for Football Australia too. This article was well written and thought provoking, but probably written with the luxury of not having to be accountable in a big do or die game. I also don't think Australia played a 4-2-2-2 in Ball Possession as Ante contends. Duke and Hrustic were at the apex of the formation in the attacking line in the 4-4-2 flat midfield when Peru had the ball. However, Mooy was clearly in a line by himself by himself when we had the ball in Ball Possession and built up, with the formation manifesting as a classic 4-3-3 attacking midfield triangle. .....................Wright.............Rowles Atkinson.................................................Behich ...............................Mooy ...........Hrustic.......................Irvine Boyle.......................Duke ....................Leckie

Actually, that is very similar to the way Ange works - 433 with the ball, 442 without it - switching to a kind of 2233 with his inverted fullbacks once the ball is won. I also saw what you saw the other night but even wondered whether I was seeing the inverted fullbacks when Atkinson and Behich went forward centrally.

From also watching the replay, what concerned me is that we probably got worse as the game progressed. From the time Maclaren came on, he barely had a decent ball delivered. Our first half was very good, even when they dominated possession for about 7 minutes at 28-35 min mark. Our defensive shape was so compact, cohesive and disciplined they couldn't get a shot on goal. The major concern is how few chances we created in extra time compared to Peru.

+x+x+xAm I the only one who is happy at the result but unhappy at the reprieve Arnie will now get for his tactical genius. Ange's major flaw in his tenure was working with a very irregular shape the players had not used at club level from about half way through the campaign. Ange wasn't using a 3-4-3 flat midfield, or diamond shaped midfield. It was like a 3-6-1. Conversely, Arnie has used formations they have had a lot of experience with at club level.

+xI do think Arnie has evolved just a teensy bit in the last six months, but maybe through circumstance rather than design. I think the Socceroos improved under Bert. It has been a huge problem for us in every we've World Cup we've been to, but in Russia if we had had more clinical forwards, we could have progressed to the next round.
