+x+xLol 2:1 Japan. What on earth was that from Neuer? Typical lethergic German collapse they've had around the past 6 years. The German commontary is just monotone conversational. Not sure how Germans didnt score. Whose that striker for Japan no respect for any of those Germans lol Doan or Asano? They've got drive.

Spain 4-0 Costa Rica after 54 minutes. NZ would've put up a better fight.
By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Wish NZ had got in. Game 2 across the tournament very very interesting. Lots of questions about rising and falling. Exciting.

Good start to Canada Belgium. Group F is the real group of death I think.

What's the rule there? Canada shoot and it's blocked. Ball goes forward to Belgium who then pass it back. A Canadian comes from beyond the goal line (outside field of play) from behind to steal the ball and the flag is up for offside. The Belgian passed it back. Was it because he came from outside the Line? He was also fouled after stealing the ball. I was thinking penalty.

Yeah I didn't think it was off, but not sure of the ruling there.

+xGood start to Canada Belgium. Group F is the real group of death I think. "An attacking player may step or stay off the field of play not to be involved in active play. If the player re-enters from the goal line and becomes involved in play before the next stoppage in play, or the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside its penalty area, the player shall be considered to be positioned on the goal line for the purposes of offside. Was it because he came from outside the Line? He was also fouled after stealing the ball. I was thinking penalty. I didn't see it but does this help? 11.4 Offences and sanctions If an offside offence occurs, the referee awards an indirect free kick where the offence occurred, including if it is in the player’s own half of the field of play. A defending player who leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission shall be considered to be on the goal line or touchline for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play or until the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside its penalty area. If the player left the field of play deliberately, the player must be cautioned when the ball is next out of play. An attacking player may step or stay off the field of play not to be involved in active play. If the player re-enters from the goal line and becomes involved in play before the next stoppage in play or the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside its penalty area, the player shall be considered to be positioned on the goal line for the purposes of offside. A player who deliberately leaves the field of play and re-enters without the referee’s permission and is not penalised for offside and gains an advantage must be cautioned.
If an attacking player remains stationary between the goalposts and inside the goal as the ball enters the goal, a goal must be awarded unless the player commits an offside offence or a Law 12 offence, in which case play is restarted with an indirect or direct free kick.

Yeah so it seems he's re-entered from beyond the goal line and gotten involved in play hence the flag going up.

+xYeah so it seems he's re-entered from beyond the goal line and gotten involved in play hence the flag going up. Appears you may have been correct. This is from the Guardians live match blog. (1) Belgium v Canada: World Cup 2022 – live (theguardian.com)9m ago 20.00 GMT Revisiting an earlier play – Buchanan was called offside when Belgium clearly passed the ball back to Vertonghen, who then fouls Buchanan.
So Buchanan should not have been called offside.
So Buchanan should’ve earned a penalty.
VAR apparently looked and … saw something different. That’s shocking in the VAR era. Shocking.

Reading the law. The player is considered on the goal line for offside but it was a backpass which ex pro ref on German TV said can't be offside.

That's not the case however.

That's not the case however. Yeah as soon as it's deliberately played by them you are no longer considered to be offside. Looks like they've been dudded. Canada 18 shots so far. Australia last night, 4 in total. Canada are ranked lower then us and Belgium higher than the French. Just goes to show what good coaching and good structures can achieve. (Also every single Saudi player came from their domestic league so saying we don't have the cattle is not strictly correct.)

Canada has been really good, which is not surprising for anyone who watched them in qualifying. Great coach and good mix of European and MLS players. And world class players in David and Davies.
Also benefiting from probably the worst performance I’ve ever seen from De Bruyne. So many bad passes.

Good effort by Canada. Had they scored the penalty....Battle for second is on. Belgium not guaranteed to win group unless they lift themselves.

I'm racking my brains trying to figure out why it's offside. The law makes it clear that you're judged either in or moving from an offside position at the point the ball is played. If it comes from your opponent, the only exception is apparently if it has been saved from the goal mouth. It used to say in the law also that you had to play at the ball, so if it ricochets a defender, it's not offside (but I can't see this in the 2022/23 laws anywhere). Only other thing I thought was they thought the Canadian player was interfering with play, but again, he's not receiving it from a team mate. Weird.
