I dont think Croatia's 50's era MIGs would be much of a match for our F35s.

Theres plenty of pebbly beaches around Dubrovnik you can send boatloads of young diggers to get mowed down in machine gun fire though.

Considering they just came third in a World Cup drawing ONLY from their 4 million domestic population I dont honestly think this was the intent.

Planning for the future is how you maintain these results though. It's smart.
I don't even care that they did it or if they continue. It's good for the kids etc too, of course it is!

As always the truth doesn't lie at either extreme, it's more likely in the middle.

Considering they just came third in a World Cup drawing ONLY from their 4 million domestic population I dont honestly think this was the intent. Sure the patriotism of some of these kids maybe leads them to Hrvatska in the future and maybe that was "back of mind" in coming down but, as Arthur says, it is pretty common overseas for these sort of "fact finding" missions in football. Ties in to a Croat national event and all and considering they did the same or similar in US or Canada I just see it as Croatian Football wanting to show appreciation to Croat communities world wide. Not everything is US vs THEM sometimes it really is a feel good story mate.

Really really naive or wilfully dumb.

Your right I must be naive.... Im sure Dalic and co would see beyond the fact that the Socceroos had to scour the globe using ancestry.com to even field a team in the WC and they are coming to the world famous football nursery of Australia to brainwash our youth.... Especially the ones with funny surnames who we are not really keen to call Australians either, unless they play good football....

Yeah I agree with you but If nothing else, having a more mature (for lack of a better word) opinion on some of the best young players could lead to them leaving for Europe earlier and thus improving exponentially as players.... I doubt 1-2 players out of the hundreds involved will EVER even consider playing for the Croatian national team nor get asked too. If anything this could help the Socceroos more than anything.

“The most important thing is that these boys and girls develop a love for football, but first and foremost, an attachment to their homeland and playing for the Croatian national team. We have always drawn players from the diaspora for selections under the auspices of the Croatian Football Federation, and we want to maintain that trend in the future as well,” Stipe Pletikosa told HNS.

“The brilliantly organized camps in Norval and Cleveland are confirmation that in this part of the world there is a great interest of our emigrants in activities under the auspices of the Croatian Football Federation, which makes us happy. We are aware that there is great potential in the diaspora, I am glad that many of our young players, with their decisions to play for Croatia, have confirmed how strong the attachment to the Croatian national team is in our families abroad. In this context, with such camps we want to further strengthen this segment of activity because we are a small country and we have to successfully find every talent, be it in Croatia or abroad,”

FFA should respond by disavowing Sydney United entry to the NSD. Make it a condition entry that you develop players for the Australian NT rather than other nations.

One thing is for certain, no other cro industries will be casting their net to the Aussie cro-oh diaspora....not a huge domestic market there for ultra thick humourless blockheads, still living in the 90s and carrying a chip on their shoulder.

 Betrayal to Australia.

Being in touch with their heritage is fine, hosting the Croatian national team and development coaches in Australia in what is clearly a talent identification program for the Croatian NT? Betrayal.

Most Croatians developed in Australia didn’t have the option to play for Croatia, as either Croatia was not recognised by FIFA at the time, or they were not actively on the radar of the Croatian FA before winning Socceroo caps. That seems all about to change as Croatian football will have a keen eye on anyone who showed promise during these camps and will likely try to integrate them into the Croatian youth set up.

I’d be happy for Sydney United to be recognised as an Australian club if they weren’t proactively developing their players to represent the Croatian national team, and then rationalising it under the slithery pretext that its “up to the player”. On that basis I have to conclude that Sydnic United can no longer be considered an Australian club, and therefore should be barred from entry into the NSD. Perhaps Melbourne Knights too as I believe they did a similar thing recently.

I think this is the best policy moving forward as I believe it will flush out clubs that are deliberately undermining Australia’s football development while ostensibly claiming to represent Australian football. That means more than just having ‘Sydney’ in your name .

Betrayal to Australia all of a sudden after producing 62 socceroos? SU has done more for australian football than your AL clubs

Hosting coaching seminars, development programmes and teaching the young coaches at these clubs can only be a positive thing for Australian football.

FYI never has a player from sydney united played for croatia.

Are we gonna pretend that most of, if not all of the kids, don't have ancestral ties to Croatia? I mean look the Sydnic 58 facebook page, they got all the kids wearing Croatia NT jerseys, they are not even trying to hide it.

Heaven forbid they cant get gifts from the croatian federation, each player received two playing kits as part of the training programme.

120-150 kids in attendance, which included players from canberra, wollongong and hurstville zagreb, being coached by their idols and world cup hero Zlatko Dalic, it's a week they'll never forget.
Doesnt mean A. they will ever be good enough for the Croatian or Australian NTs, and B. Choose Croatia.

Well done Sydney United and Melbourne Knights (Yes they are going to Melbourne too), we need more of this, due to geography our football culture can be very insular.

In Europe the exchange of coaching ideas and learning is much easier and open, due to distances.

We need more of it, having National Coaches from, Netherlands, France, Italy, Croatia, Germany, Spain Greece, Serbia etc etc offers great learning experience and networks for players and coaches.

This

Europe is funding the war not Chelsea football club

Two (out of 89) NPL clubs run a training program that associates with their heritage and the "outrage?" quickly flows into its second page here.

A single topic covering ALL of the games of the current A League round can't fill a page.

State of the game encapsulated.

I agree that geographical distances don’t help us but also I feel we are not as open minded to learning new ideas as I thought we would compared to overseas countries.
When people come from overseas especially from the top football countries we tend to look down on them rather than seeking as much information as we can.

Thats my outside observation from it anyway.

Interesting that Simunic is one of their spokespeople.

He was one of Aus's biggest who got away. He was developed in Aus, but played for Croatia.

At the same time given  Croatia have a modest league, with two powerhouses, Hadjuk Spilt and Dynamo Zagreb, with a population of circa 5 million, Croatia are an incredible football nation ATM! They punch well above their weight!

To quote  Netherlands, 16 million, and Portugal, 9 million, for comparison is surprising, because they also punch above their weight given their populations, but not as much as Croatia.

It is teams like Russia, Germany, Spain, England, France,  Italy, et al, with 40  million population or more, that Croatia are impressive, relative to, in comparison terms.

A Croatian mate of mine said that Croatians from Dalmatia  from all over the world pour money into Hadjuk Spilt.

Yes the old Sydney United should commended for their contribution to producing Socceroos. Thank you old Sydney United. It however appears that the current Sydnic United is a very different beast, one that is focused on developing players for Croatia rather than the Socceroos. Betrayal.

The whole point of these “seminars” and development programmes are clearly geared at indoctrinating the kids with “homeland” nationalism and identifying future talent for the NT, all the while continuing their development in the country of their passports. How does this benefit the Socceroos?  It doesn’t , it just benefits the Croatian FA, as is its intention. That is the whole point pf the program. They and Sydnic United dont give a fudge about the Socceroos.

Gifts are fine, but these arent gifts, it is part of a strategy to cultivate love, passion and loyalty for their “homeland” so that these kids choose to play for Croatia. Its not like Dalic, Siminic and co came to Australia bearing gifts out of the goodness of their hearts and to develop kind loving relations with FFA. THEY CAME TO POACH OUR TALENT!

Doesnt mean A or B, but it definitely does mean C, they will be more likely to choose Croatia. Its smart by the Croatian FA, totally dumb by FFA and we our dimwitted fans like Dirk and Arthur if we just stand by and cop it.

They arnet here to learn from and us and exchange ideas and information and develop friendly relations with our federation. This isnt some cultural exchange program that is mutually beneficial to both parties.  Sure such a meeting is possible however the way that this has been orchestrated is totally in the favour of the Croatian FA while exposing our best Australian Croatian talent to play for Croatia. It might only be one player, perhaps the next Modric, are we seriously gonna stand by with our thumbs in our butts and let is happen?

There is absolutely zero benefit from an Australian football perspective.

This isn't about the Socceroos, this is about the fact that clubs like Sydney United even exist.

you sir, are a special human being. lol.

so who is actually in the wrong here? The Croatian Football Federation for expanding its wings, holding training sessions in our backyard and teaching coaches about development etc or football federation australia for not being proactive and neglecting the youth system?

If 1 or 2 croatian kids did get noticed and picked up by the HNS and eventually play for the croatian national team, that is more of a reflection of the state of our game here and its failures, cause everyone would be up in arms just like the Volpato situation....

If you or any other dumb fuck on this forum think this is any threat to the Socceroo's then you're another ethnic /golden generation hating racist nutcase.

This isn't about the Socceroos, this is about the fact that clubs like Sydney United even exist.

Have a cup of tea and a lie down dear, it's going to be OK.

Of course its a threat. The Croatia FA now have tabs on and direct contact with our brightest and best talent from the Croat-Australian community, within a critical developmental age group. They didnt bring their academy and NT heavyweights 15000km all the way to Australia foe a sausage sizzle mate, they are here to identify and poach our youth. And Sydnic United are rolling out the red carpet for them to do so. If you cant see how this is going to result in perhaps the next Mark Viduka pulling on the red and white checks instead of the green and gold then frankly you have shit for brains.

As for your paranoid rant that this is about Sydnic United existing, not true at all. Sydnic United have no obligation to serve Australian football in any capacity whatsoever. They can serve their Croatian masters as much as they want, however in the context of the NSD and one of its functions as giving young Aussie players a platform to develop at a higher level, we should give priority to those clubs who are fully committed to developing Australian players for the Australian football team. Sydnic United clearly dont share this philosophy, as is their right, as is our right to dump on their NSD ambitions.

you sir, are a special human being. lol.

so who is actually in the wrong here? The Croatian Football Federation for expanding its wings, holding training sessions in our backyard and teaching coaches about development etc or football federation australia for not being proactive and neglecting the youth system?

If 1 or 2 croatian kids did get noticed and picked up by the HNS and eventually play for the croatian national team, that is more of a reflection of the state of our game here and its failures, cause everyone would be up in arms just like the Volpato situation....

So Croatian FA spend a few days signing some autographs and watching some kids a ball around and suddenly that trumps a lifetime of development within the Australian system? Fuck off mate.

As I said, its smart what the Croatian FA are doing, my gripe isnt with them. Its with two faced clubs like Sydnic United who are encouraging and facilitating kids born and raised Australian to turn their backs on their country, all the while continuing their development within the Australian football landscape.

if you know the croatian community well enough, you'd know they are born patriotic and dont need dalic and co to come here and brainwash them as you think they do lol.

No one is born patriotic, it takes lots of parental intervention and influence to turn young kids born and raised here against their nation. Its why Australians with non Australian ancestry often struggle with divided loyalties, the lines between culture, heritage and nationality sometimes become blurred and making decisions about who to play for is not easy. Even Simunic apparently called Viduka with advice on whether he should represent Australia or Croatia.

Obviously exposing young Croat Australians to the Croatian FA, heroes like Simunic, Pletikosa etc, presenting them with Croatia jerseys and monitoring and perhaps funding some parts of their development is all part of a strategy designed to tip the international tug of war scales in their favour.
