Unexpectedly good crowd. Away section would have pushed it higher, but can't complain too much about 11k in a 16.5k stadium. Just a shame the casuals don't show up for every home game.

16.5k capacity, often quoted, is not correct. They could only get that with people standing on all the steps, which would never happen. I feel it is just under 16k.

If only more clubs had a stadium of Hinmarsh's size and intimacy.

I'm sure I read after the new seats were put in years ago seated capacity dropped to 15k? It's been a while since we sold standing room tickets I dare say. Maybe ACL semi final or possibly an FFA Cup final? Probably not though.

Why unexpected? We got >10k vs Perth the week before.

If anything it's bad that only 600 extra showed up vs Victory but it was 39 degrees days in a row (even though cool change came in an hour before kick off).

As I said before the game I think people overestimate how many fans Victory bring over.

Victory away fans usually only account for a few hundred (maybe 300-400). However it's the local casuals that make up the extra couple of thousand. It's always going to be a big crowd and it's almost always going to be a good battle on the field. It's like any other derby, plenty of people around that just go to the big games.
Just saying it was unexpected for both the lack of away fans combined with the weather conditions. I was expecting around the 9k mark.

Isn't Adelaide vs Victory virtually a derby?

Nice crowd btw, congrats to Adelaide.

Obviously we have played Victory twice at home in 5 games now but so far our average attendance is the highest it's been since 15/16.

Given that and the fact we are sliding down the table I'm sure that will come down but we are at least back to pre-covid years.

17/18 was the last time our average got even close to 10k and we played Victory at Adelaide Oval that year

@Davide82 That is good to see. There is a lot to like about the A League this year. Pity the negative reports get prominence, but I guess that is what always happens.

The build up towards the NSD will provide some positive news which will be good. Hopefully those who miss out do not drag the good news stories down.

I'd say a lot of that has to do with the good results AU have had over the last two seasons. Making it to the semi-finals two years in a row and being properly competitive in the process doesn't go unseen. I'd say Goodwin's NT performance has also helped in getting a few people back on board. He's the type of player/personality that the fans love to get behind and unfortunately for the AL, that's a bit of a rarity these days.

Goodwin and the other young attacking talents has certainly been a factor.
Good vibes around a young side full of South Aussies helps in a parochial town.
We do tend to play entertaining football (when we aren't shit) so that helps compared to the Kurtz days when results were as good but crowds were lower.

Funnily enough for the last couple years Mariners have been my preferred 2nd team to watch.
More similarities between us than a lot of other teams I think.

ACL final got 17000.

I believe capacity dropped a bit with the red seat refit a few years back. In the old days the seating capacity was around 15,500 with standing room on top. I think capacity would be closer to 15,000 these days.

I've been in 16,000+ crowds there before the refit and people were standing everywhere.

So let's look at the fixtures this weekend:

Adelaide vs MacArthur 8k (not sure how they go with Friday night fixtures) if they get above 8k they are tracking well.

Western vs Sydney (in Tassie) 2k? Not sure what their goal is playing in Tassie I guess they just get paid to play there.

Brisbane vs Melbourne city they're round 2 game got 7,890 at suncorp. Predicting 5k for this

Perth vs victory 4k. Makeshift venue perth doing what they can enough said

Wellington vs mariners: wellington have won two games in a row and mariners are doing well. 6k

Newcastle vs wanderers 6k Newcastle are midtable so it'll stay around their average for this season.

Historically Friday night was our best and favourite time slot.

In fact there were years when we lobbied for more of them. We originally had heaps but when one of the FTA TV deals started they gave us less Fridays and we complained.

Whether that's still true I'm not sure but definitely was back in the day

Surely they don't get paid to play there?

Sure do. The Tassie gov funds the game(s).
Given their AAMI park crowds, WU probably make more money going to Tassie than they do at 'home'.

I guess, why not.
Other sport, pull  money for playing anywhere to smallish crowds.  Even the AFL pulls some money for playing one game a year in Alice Springs (of all places), which is even smaller than Bathurst.  I'd be surprised if more than 2,500 attend that game.

In fact, I can recall coming across a tweet not long ago, perhaps from Sports Industry, talking about the ACT renewing its deal with the Giants to play 3 games per year in Canberra, and it's pretty decent money they are paying as well (for a club that absolutely no one supports).

So for a crap club like WU, with no home ground, they may as well take the money.

I liked the uniqueness of the stadium and place. It’s what chairman’s and boards fail to understand. We have 3 clubs playing out the of the same stadium nothing unique or distinct here, no representation of its region.

You made me realise my typo! No idea why I wrote semi final I clearly meant final as you probably realsied from my description of the game.

The semi was a better night though. I still picture the goal by diego from time to time.

to be fair the APL took a sledgehammer to any potential boost in crowd numbers all for the sake of better dividends for their board members.
