Melbourne alone has almost added 2 million more ppl since the nsl highest attendances, why do you think afl/nrl crowds are now bigger compared to the 90s? Must have been the mono ethnics holding them back.

AL highest was 350% more than NSL highest.
In 2008, when the A League had it's highest attendance the population was only 21 million.
Again, why haven't the mono ethnic clubs increased their attendances instead of dropping them down to miserable numbers, with the now 26 million?

Obviously because they havent been competing at a national level for 20 years with no prospect of promotion, but of course you knew that.

Never fear APL are adding another monoethnic club to the roster :)

Suffice to say, if we get taken over by Newcastle United and have to wear a black and white kit, there is no coming back for me.

In the previous regime NZ Knights, North Queensland Fury and Gold Coast United all had higher average attendances when they left the A-League than both Macarthur Bulls and Western United.

Both of these crap franchises have higher away attendances than home attendances.

Both brought to the A-League by Fox Sports.

Sydney fc crowds have been excellent this year despite middling form

what have they been doing right? (Apart from not hitting fans with buckets)

why are city and newcastle so low?

I would imagine the main factors are; back Sfs/new stadium, the stadium in question is also better served by public transport than it was previously as (there are now frequent trams to shuttle you from the city centre to the Moore park precinct), also the stadium is far more central than the others they were playing at so it’s easier to make a night/afternoon of a match day with pre and/or post game activities (I also think this is one reason why derbies tend to be better attended at sfs by the general public than parramatta), also the new stadium offers significantly better weather protection than the old one/the stadiums they had been playing at, also Sydney had its wettest year every last year and thats now easing/weather is going a bit more back to “normal”. Not to mention the stadium in general is just world class, where as the old one was dated

If sydney, victory and wsw all can have attendances like this, and that seems realistic to me, then the league does look sustainable to me

sfc crowd attendances, along with adelaide united and the quality on the pitch are a few feel good stories to give us some hope

I know people are disappointed with wsw crowd numbers, and I agree they could improve a little. But I think people need to remember, their average is around 10k, that’s really not that different to the sorts of  Crowds they were getting in their first season prior to their “glory days” which were never going to last forever, a few clubs have had a period like this, victory, and Perth glory before them. The old parramatta stadium only held 20k on a good day, so it always looked quite full. The new parra is about the size of aami park.

10k is indeed ok. Do you think they can get back up to 15k? What do they need to do

I think it’s a realistic long term goal, maybe not over night, but slowly slowly, I think the club has long term growth potential, Macarthur..im not so sure about.
West Sydney, if they can have a sustained period of success, better fixturing ie. playing matches at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon  in the western suburbs in summer (in Sydney you don’t want to make people choose between the beach and the match, for many the beach will win every time). They also need the rbb to be strong, the main attraction in attending in person for many is the atmosphere, good to see they’re slowly rebuilding.

Will be interesting to see the effect the second division has on their crowds. Won’t effect their core support too much, but I think they share more causal fans with ex nsl/potential nst clubs than Sydney fc do. Marconi, Sydney United, and Sydney Olympic are all based in the western suburbs and there definitely is an element of fans who “used to support x club back in the day”. I wouldn’t think it would be a factor of more than a couple thousand max who would stop attending all together

Newcastle is up 60% on last year's attendance which is not a bad recovery after the covid and lockdown issues.  They are up with attendance in the season before covid but significantly down on their better seasons.  We have to remember that we had a 3 year war between the clubs and FFA where even the clubs' spokesman was talking the league down followed by a couple of covid years so it will take a few more years to put the effect of those out of people's mind.  The result of the GFC was average attendance in the 8,000s and attendance recovered to more acceptable levels and I expect in time it will again but the APL will have to get out of the habit of shooting itself in the foot.

Your reaching. You're playing the one quality and exciting team in the comp and you get less than 5000 people bothering to turn up. That crowd number epitomizes the problem with this comp. Most football people know the quality of the game is poor and they can't be bothered throwing good money after bad.
Also, can anyone confirm that that many people actually turned up to watch CC v M/ Thur because it didn't look like half that many. Whoever had that bright idea should be sacked immediately.

I wasn't talking about that specific Newcastle game but seeing you brought it up it was Newcastle's lowest attendance so far this season and it was up against the Supercars.  Do you reckon that a marquee event that drew 167,000 over the weekend might have taken a few fans off the total attendance in a regional city?

Do bogans still follow supercars? How does that work now that there are exactly 0 cars made in Australia now and nothing to be bogan-patriotic about? Asking as someone that's lived out of the country for a fair while.

I have no knowledge of the types of characters that follow the Supercars either here or in Newcastle but I am aware that they get good attendances wherever they go.  The attendance after missing 2 years due to covid restrictions was their second highest in the short time they have been running the event in Newcastle.  I think in a regional city these types of events that happen only once a year become as much a social gathering as a "sporting" occasion so I expect the crowds were made up of the theatre goers, the curious and the rev heads.

No I don't. Nobody watches Newcastle because like most of the clubs the quality of the football is woeful.
I'm currently watching the Newcastle v Dolphins game at MacDonald Jones stadium on a very hot day with a crowd of approximately 60 - 70% capacity. How many supporters would be there if it was the football team playing. Only 30% of all the grounds capacities is being used, that is the supporters of the game telling us that something is wrong and even more parlous is the tv audience and people want to expand.
Shouldn't the powers be finding ways to up the crowds first, of the  current teams, before bringing in more teams to embarrass the sport.
And yes I'll be watching the football tonight because I put my money where my mouth is and paid for Paramount so I could watch the football. What about you?
