Danny T has delusions of grandeur 😜 There wouldn’t be 22k tickets sold if it was Reds v City. Just dumb luck that there’s a Nsw side in GF boosting ticket sales.

Mariners almost have equal to home ground advantage with way more crowd support in stands than City.

Origin 1 is in Adelaide

I bumped into this channel surfing last night... WTF it was a healthy crowd in Adelaide to watch NSW play QLD in a sport nobody in Adelaide really follows?????

People (I assume from Adelaide) were wearing purple or blue merchandise and everything... effectively cheering on another state???????

It would have to be people that maybe grew up in NSW/QLD and have since moved to SA. Also I'm sure plenty of people would make a bit of a trip out of it.

Fair enough..... Didnt think their would be that many QLD and NSW expats in Adelaide to be honest, nor that people would travel interstate for a meaningless friendly ....  They filled the stadium though I guess so it must be working for them.

Just sharing.... just scanned News, Fairfax, ABC online sports pages.... no mention of the GF...

7, 9, ABC no mention last night or this morning that I saw....

On 10 only Ch 1 has been promoting...

Seems Football has become a nitsch code in Australia... media wise anyway...

Don't underestimate how much they love Origin. I don't get it either, but for some reason they love it. Pretty much all of them. I work with two guys who moved to Melbourne from QLD. One has been living in Mel for 20 years, the other 30years. Neither really follow the NRL other than the occasional game on the TV. Both couldn't wait to talk about the Origin game this morning. My SO is from QLD. She's been living in Melbourne for 15 years. Doesn't watch the NRL, doesn't even have an NRL team, yet she kicked me out of the lounge so she could watch the game on the big TV.
Again, I don't get it, but I grew up in Melbourne.

yes and the qlder - it was weird but SOO been there before and Perth.
Always is a sell out.

Its the best of the mugs/redneck games, harder faster and the refs bit more flexible with the biff.
For you and someguyfc - you know I'm our football through and through but of the 3 eggball codes its the only game I can stomach to watch.
The main games not the regular round games, SOO/Finals its ok.

I get that, for some reason, Sydney and Brisbane have a "rivalry" but still scratching my head as to why someone in Adealide or Melbourne or Perth or anywhere else would care (Unless they are expats of course).

I think its going to be in Melbourne next year as well. Hahahahahahahah The tragedy is it will pack out the MCG and then the poor Melbourne Storm will go back to 10k crowds the next week.... People are such "consumers" sometimes.

It was played at the MCG in 2018. 87k attendance. However, there are plenty of NSW/QLD expats living in Melbourne so it's not surprising.
Apparently SA government paid $5m to host the game last night.

Nah, 3 game series blows everything here out of the water , plus goes overseas.

3.5 million viewers last night for 1 game that doesn't decide anything

Expat or not, if you know the Sport or even just watch once a year, it'll be State of Origin.
Players going seriously flat out, Sell out parochial crowds and usually some good biff.  (3 concussed in first 10mins of the decider last year)
It's the kind of crazy shit any fan of sport can get something out of.

I'd suggest you suck it and see,  Game 2 is in 3 weeks.  Qld need to wrap it up at home or go to Sydney for the decider.

Seeing as less than 6k turn up each week, that should give you a pretty good indication of how many will make the trip north. I'd predict less than 1k. Possibly even less than 500.

State of Origin is awesome. I watch 4 games of NRL every year. The 3 origins and the GF.

Would not miss the games no matter what.

As for Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide hosting them. They can all go and get fucked. People watch and support it all year in QLD and NSW only for the cunce to go and take away one of the best matches for some delusional, forlorn hope that maybe 2 or 3 people will be converted into NRL fans.

More money grubbing bullshit from the pricks in charge. No need to look any further than the NRL for where 2-bit Townsend got his ideas from.

Whether A-L or NSL, I look at the success or otherwise of the management of the game.... as we have discussed before the NSL was a system no matter how successful it would never have received main stream broad based community support.... most of those involved in the NSL were decent hard working people.... the A-L is equally mostly full of hard working decent people...

The miss management of Football in Australia over decades beggars belief.... We are such a divided lot ... full of self importance and full of our option's are right and we have the wisdom...

APL need to be locked in a room with CBS ... just fix things... alas I doubt this is going to happen DT is selectively picking the stories that suit his past actions...

A truth many don't seem to want to consider is for a second division or a lower division to succeed it needs a very successful first division..

I watched about half an hour of a local match my guess U 16 or U 17 match.... no idea what Div in was in... however the quality of the play amazed me and as I looked across the fields of which there were 4... I tho, why, whoever has been in charge, has  never been able to connect to the player base and there close contacts...

Its quite sad actually and I am beginning to think its never going to change... to many egos, to much self interest, to much infighting, and way too much miss management...

I watched a bit last night and, shit the tackles are brutal (I dont know sweet fuck all about rugby but even I can see the extra level of intensity) just wonder why the players dont play that hard for their clubs???

It's hard to explain but it's been going now for 40+ years and still the overall wins are nearly 50/50 so there's that. (Qld are in front.)

The games are hyped to the max. Pre-1980 Qld players that played in NSW were selected to play for NSW when they played QLD. As a result Qld got belted every year. Every single year and the bananas hated it. (There was a lot of pent up frustration for the bananas.)

In 1980 they said it's State of Origin*. IE WHERE YOU ARE FROM. Or that's supposedly what it's meant to be. (There's a lot of very, very tenuous links.)

[Sidebar.]
The ORIGIN part of it became a very flexible concept which IMO stinks. Adrian Lam, captain of PNG played for QLD, Brad Thorn, a friggin All Black played for QLD and dozens of other bullshit examples like Greg Inglis who never set foot in QLD, maybe once visited an Dreamworld on a school excursion, and got picked on the 'vibe' of being a QLDer which aggravates the respective punters even more. Especially when that prick Inglis became the record try scorer for QLD and was a major part of their 10 year domination of NSW.

Someone will bring up Peter Sterling I'm sure.
[Sidebar ends.]

In the very first game they played it was billed as 'state against state', 'mate against mate' and the bananas, being the 2 headed retards they are with massive chips on their shoulders saw this as an opportunity to finally get square. (They are far more the parochial of the 2 states.). In the first match in 1980 Arthur Beetson (QLD) belted his club team mate which really set the whole thing alight. Qld won the first series and then the next couple. Each subsequent year it was hyped even more and QLD played the underdog card against the 'showboating, up-themselves NSWelshmen'.

Part of the appeal back then, besides the games being the best of the best, was that fighting was allowed and, as a bonus, State of Origin had it's own rules where pretty much anything went resulting in all in brawls, premeditated fights, bust ups after sin-bins and all the rest of it. Made those ice hockey brawls you see look like handbags at 5 paces. If nothing else do yourself a favour and look up Origin brawls on youtube. It's brilliant.

So the brawls and fighting had a lot to do with the appeal because, as I said, it was almost impossible to get sent off and everyone knew it was going to explode. And, pretty much every game, it did. Regards the actual games they were faster than club football with bigger hits. ( Better matches than the internationals Australia played.) Something like 70% of S.O.O. matches have been won with a margin of 6 points or less so generally they're always very close.

The Origin series also acts as selection trials for the Australian side which, also back in the day, used to mean something when they played England. The funny thing is because hardly anyone plays league Australia generally belts up other countries (there have been some upsets of late). Meaning that the state of Origin matches are the pinnacle of the league competitive fixtures.

Regards your last sentence the players do play like that for their clubs but remember this is the best of the best so they are picking the biggest, fastest, strongest units.

I'm old enough to remember State of Origin in the VFL (pre AFL) and way back I'm sure I remember there were fights in that.

If you find it weird that NSW and QLD get so wound up over this isn't it weirder when teams in football go nuts when they play teams in THEIR OWN CITY. That's weirder if you ask me.

I gotta disagree on that one.
I see Origin as more of just a weird tradition that has grown more and more popular over time like many traditions do. I guess a bit like the Ashes in cricket.
Where a player was born or where they started their Rugby career or whatever rules they use, seems like such an odd arbitrary thing to derive teams from. It would be no different than saying we're starting a weekday competition, where there are 7 teams and players are chosen based on what day of the week they were born.

(They are far more the parochial of the 2 states.)

As a QLDer I'm baffled by how the roar are run given how parochial we are.

If you had roar players mostly from QLD, with some matchday leaflets about where each player grew up and roar players appearing in drought/flood/natural disaster affected regions for raising charity roar's stadium would be packed. We would rather lose with a bunch of QLDers than win with a bunch of players from the rest of the country

make it a QLD club rather than - gestures vaguely - whatever the heck it is now

well spelled out Muzza in short form as you well know.
So much more behind it but the Vics don't get it more than anything because of their rivalry towards NSW/Sydney being NRL and the big smoke for so long compared to their aeriel handball and wanting to be bigger than Sydney that by pop is becoming that way so they can have that after so many decades.
I also recall snippets of their afl vsing adelaide, something of an origin type and the hatred carried on, (I call it rivalry) when AL started MV vs AU games they always loved rubbing AU nose's int he ground so what you on about MSC barring fishing :)
SOO like Muz are th eonly games I watch and the semis to GF but SOO is best of the best mugs and tuff as, meatheads can cope with that shit, good being a spectator haha

Sure Grazor, your right IF BR put some focus more on being Qldr they would come.
