According to the article the AFL and NRL only take a cut on betting on the two top tiers of their sports but who knows.

This. I know some AFL Clubs get significant revenue from pokies too. While others have decided to get out of it for social/moral reasons. AFL itself gets massive revenue from gambling to the point I doubt they can/are willing to uncouple. This is a problem right across sport.

Not sure if you're referring to AFL in the NSW fashion as the whole code, or the traditional meaning of the AFL league. But for the code, pokies goes way down the chain. Local "amateur" clubs in SA have pokies and you have this ridiculous situation where local clubs with no gate revenue (they're just open suburban parks) pay amateur players a wage - solely funded by poker machines in the clubhouse. The players aren't generating the revenue, nobody is watching them play, but they demand a wage.

In the AFL, I understand that North Melbourne was the first to outright exit from poker machines for the reasons you state. I also understand that Hawthorn, previously a glutenous big for pokies, was trying to wind that down. It has to happen. You can't rake in billions from media and make an argument that they are needed in any form.

Unfortunately, pokies are intertwined with Australian society and one of the misgivings I have about the land of my birth and upbringing. It's not just that they're so prevalent, but they are concentrated in lower socio economic areas and preying on people. How a society gets by thinking that's okay.... doesn't sit right with me.

I've never put a cent in one of those machines and I'm proud of it. I used to go regularly to the local pub of an SANFL team Woodville West Torrens and have their shnitties once a week. After a while they stinkeyed me a bit for not doing what I'm "supposed" to do - eat the subsidised meat and lose a shitload on the 50 machines in the next room...

Its a scourge at every single level..... Agree with bohemia, its a farkin disease in this country (and worldwide) mainly amongst the disadvantaged... Look at all the pokie barns around town, full of elderly degenerates pissing their pensions away and going home to eat cat food.....

I still; cant believe we allow gambling to be advertised so heavily in sport (and junk food) and then act all high an mighty by banning alcohol and tobacco adds.....

Every single NPL match Ive watched over the years has at least one dodgy Asian betting site guy with his laptop or ipad watching the game live feeding possession stats and match events to bet365 or whatever scum... The South v Thunder game was abandoned at half time on Sunday because the MS trust screwed up something with the lighting towers and everyone at the ground was pissing themselves laughing at all these Nigerian and Russian blokes getting angry online because they forfeited their bets.....
