So Stacjic was too professional while Tony G is woke.Maybe the Filipinas find Alen's coaching just right.

We don't know what the feeling is/was in the change rooms?

Stacjic has had pretty good success with the Matildas, CCM ( with the cattle he had) and now value added with the Philippines.

Some Matildas were publicly upset with his sacking. It was a really weird process how he was sacked? I would be more confident with him at the helm now.

A family member has played NPL and won a senior state title, is always criticising Courtney Vine. She thinks her skill level is way below her incredible pace and and athleticism.

Last night Vine received one  very difficult long pass, with the outside of her right foot and controlled it with consummate skill  despite  being tightly marked. She seemed to have trouble beating her Irish defenders 1 v1 though, like Raso was able to do on the right flank.

I'd also like to see Tony G swap wingers and interchange them at times - a modern football trend.

It seems this team is over ratioed with more players with power and power and less on technical ability, im curious how we will go against more stronger opposition who will hurt us when we lose the ball.

Ha ha!

I am  revelling  football now  having a big profile in the mainstream media in Aus.

Most of my mates and family are sick of me moaning football doesn't get our deserved  share of  coverage. Had a real go at a really good mate of mine at a social gathering, about constantly talking about AFL, with everybody else  listening intently. It was in extreme frustration at the lack of recent football coverage. I also proffered that the Socceroos and Matildas were the second and third most popular nation teams after the men's cricket team (which I also follow).  I was very embarrassed, ashamed and apologetic about my actions!

Yet when I travelled with him in  Italy, England and Switzerland, he was subjected to non- stop football chatter - that I contributed to. I was accused of leaving them out of the conversation!

Now family and friends are talking about Mary Fowler and Same Kerr, their families, ethnicity and upbringing. I imagine we are going to hear about Steph Catley too in the next few days. The media tend to  want glamorous, articulate females to interview. The Matildas have a number  of players that fit the stereotypes  that the media want - which is good for the profile of football.

A fleeting fancy Im afraid.... Win the WC (or even lose gracefully in the final) and perhaps the conversations will change. By September however this "attention" will have all but dissipated. Sadly I think the current "good vibes" are driven by champions of "women's sport" not exclusively women's "football fans" . Women's football wont need it's "bucket man" moment to negate the current uplift in interest. Come the Aleague women's season commencing the girls will be back to playing in front of sub 1000 crowds again....

Either a 4-2-3-1 or a 3-4-1-2 might be more suited to this team but it seems the coaches have other ideas, only time will tell if their 4-4-2 mid block will work or not.

Many teams play a flat midfield 4-4-2 when the other team has the ball.

It is just that there's  often too much space between the central midfielders  and the front two in the Matildas, when we have the ball.

Agree.

Also agree. I'd add that the fact she was in tears at the game made me worry injury is worse. Also statement didn't exclude possibility or even expectation that she could be out for longer.

If group D goes "according to script", England will finish top of the group.

It would still be tempting to play her in game 3 to make sure we win our group as well - finishing 2nd in our group would mean playing England in the 2nd round and very possibly going out.
I'm sure that we'd rather play China/Denmark/Haiti in the 2nd round instead.

There's no right answer, all depends on the severity of the injury, how the groups play out, etc.
But I'm sure going out in the 2nd round will be a fail as far as Football Australia, and the footballing community, is concerned.
Next 2 weeks are going to be very interesting! :)

Canada vs Nigeria just finished 0-0, which is good for us.

If we win against Nigeria and Canada vs Ireland also finishes as a draw, we could rest Sam in the 3rd match because we would be on 6 points and all the others on 2 points - even if we lost the 3rd game against Canada we'd still win the group.

I'd love to get Haiti in the 2nd round!

Matildas onky have one more flight in the group stage, Brisbane to Melbourne.

I tend to agree.

However, nearly all current players (often the case) and former players are lauding his tenure.

This is our best team we've had, and I agree they are being wasted. I preferred Stajic.  Nevertheless,  as a player manager, Tony G might be what makes the players feel happier in camp.

It's fine to for them to do so. Watching the Matildas documentary one can see why. He's a very friendly personable person. Gives the girls the chance to be themselves and be individuals outside of football. Not knocking that, but it's a bit like Ole, got to know when to be the coach and be the friend. Don't win tournaments on good vibes.

Davstar - 20 Jul 2023 10:03 PM
zimbos_05 - 20 Jul 2023 9:48 PM

my 'feelings' are i agree but perhaps we judge him at the end of the tournament...

He's been coach since 2020. He's had more than enough time to be judged on so I think it's fair to judge him. The talk has been about how we can win this tournament, but watching the other top teams, you can see there is a difference. We need to be sure in games. I'm not being overly critical, just an opinion regarding how I've seen the progression in his reign.

Some Matildas were publicly upset with his sacking. It was a really weird process how he was sacked? I would be more confident with him at the helm now.

But we do. The complaints were made by the Young Matildas. The Matildas were very supportive because he was making them more professional. The Young Matildas weren't ready for that.

I don't subscribe to the notion  that players choose coaches. I can't see that younger players can determine what is best for them in the future?

It has also occurred in the Aus men's Test cricket team.

I had also read in the past that Ross Aloisi lifted the professionalism of the Matildas in  his short  stint as their assistant  coach.

I was just going through the possibilities for the Matildas.  Two losses and they are out.  Two losses and two wins to Ireland and the Matildas are last in the group.  Both of those would be disastrous for the Matildas.  What are the other possibilities and how likely are they?  It appears we are in a group with no standout team so anything is possible.

I prefer to think we beat Nigeria then Canada and Ireland draw. Guaranteed to top the group.

Fowler out (and Luik) due to 'mild concussion' at training.

We have the worst luck at world cups.
