I'll be really interested to see the other big teams against bus parkers. They also take some time to score and always get there.

They're friendlies so a bit hard to gauge but I also think Ecuador and Mexico underestimated us and didn't defend as much as they needed too. This led to all the good space and our better players were also out there.

Thankfully we saw massive improvement with our better players on and hadn't had McGree on for significant time since Mexico. If we can get Atkinson in he'll link up more with Boyle. Iredale, Yengi and Fornaroli also need to feature at some point.

You look at Uzbekistan 2019 and games against the rest of the mid level AFC. They're good at packing the defence because they know and fear Australia as a big team. We just can't cope with that. The selections for such situations are often horribly wrong.

If Arnold wants to insist on inverted fullbacks to add to the midfield then Baccus is perfect for the right and Rowles can cover the left nicely. In turn you can drop Behich, Jones and Miller and add Irankunda, Teague and Arzani to address the packed defence issue for example. If Irvine is going to go at a snail's pace then Nisbet can come in right away and show him what transition is.

I think things can only get better as the opponent level improves gradually in the tournament. Still, Syria and Uzbekistan have a much better balance in positioning us out of the game compared to what the big opponent friendlies did last year. I get the impression big nations take the risk of spreading their players way out with the trust their one on one ability to defend against our players will suffice. I'm referring to space afforded to us by Japan in Sydney, Mexico and Ecuador certainly allowed us a number of opportunities.

I agree re Nisbet. I wish we had him there. I think he is capable of unpicking packed defences. O'Neill, Nisbet, McGree.

Im a little baffled by the tide of negativity

I feel like its the pim era all over again. We have a team that is better withour the ball than with the ball. So the tradeoff is ugly games against minnows for a better shot against strong teams. People were also weird about the pim era because they were judging our team by how dominant we were against minnows

No wonder people dont rate farrel, i reckon fans hate jedi if he didnt play in the epl. Defence is one half of the game. Judging us on how we go against minnows is like judging test cricketers solely on their boundary hitting

Now we could after all this end up having a bad asian cup, or we could win the whole thing. But it is too eaely to tell. Right now early in the tournament it is all about getting the results and shutting out opposition chances. The only concerns arnie would have would be that header we conceded and the two moments in counter attack we had werent precise enough.

Actually the header we conceded is reminscent of the fact that we have struggled defensively against aerial crosses for over a year. So i suspect that will remain a chink in our armour

In any case whether we win the whole thing, stumble out early or something in between the start of the tournament will look the same - struggling against organized minnows

Also not much point in complaining about squad selection before we know the plan

Arnie could keep it largely the same to have the glue set in defensive combos or he could be rptating to keep it fresh. If the former we will only know if the selection is right when we face a stronger team, if the latter why would u complain he didnt select the best team against india?

I think we'll see the better players as the tournament goes on. I think Jones is an early pawn before bringing Atkinson and Miller. There was a decent spread of players yesterday. Way early but we should aim to not exhaust anyone.

Japan have it good that Indonesia is their third game so expect heavy rotation there.

If we only draw with Syria it puts us under massive pressure.

I prefer watching atkinson and miller too, but jones wins a lot of defensive duels so could be favoured.

return of the bogan media!

I think Hans berger was right that we do struggle with a reactive style of play - it does conflict with our mentality since we want to dominate

I think you could be right, it was also a mid season WC which meant guys like Goodwin, Leckie and the a-league guys were all in form and had been playing and scoring, We usually dont have that at WC's as the a-league boys have been off a few months by then. Also Souttar had an unbelievable tournament. All this together and Arnie kinda of turning them into a gritty team helped but we got a lot of luck.

There's a huge and hugely respected sports newspaper in France called L'Equipe (= the Team). They awarded Arnold with Coach of the Qatar WC Award,  because of his achievements (beating Denmark and Tunisia, scaring the Argies in round of 16) with players none of whom were playing  in the top 5 European Leagues. They don't give prizes away easily the French...
But something's not working - the recent Palestine, Bahrain and India games betray a lack of attacking creativity, which was finally produced by McGree when he came on, easily the best of the bunch. We need the Arzanis, Irankundas, Kuols - and Bos could well be in their ranks soon too

Or put another way we havent conceded a goal in that time while being competitive against stronger sides. Thats just how reactive sides look - struggle against weaker teams and give heart attacks to stronger teams. Our quality is in our defense

Unsure as to why Bos did not start. 🤔 If anything he should start in either position on the left. Both Fullbacks a bit meh and although okay defensively thought Jones looked well lost while in possession.
India were very physical, compact in central areas and I think managed to drag us down to their level.

Once on think I preferred build up with O'Neill at the base, obviously helped by both Bos and McGree trying to make something happen.

Amazing flick header by Vietnam to make it 1:1.

Jaoan goal came from a poor catch attempt. A quick cross shot deflected into Minamino's path.

Both keepers are foreign born with Japan's born to an African American father in Arkansas and Vietnam's born in the Czech Republic.

Fucking wow Vietnam lead 2:1! Free kick headed across and the keeper weakly two hands it down into the path of a Vietnamese to slot it. Japan reaction is furious now.

Vietnam have been very keen to play the ball out in transition risking it as Japan swarm. Japan certainly playing it around but haven't had an absolute clear chance as such.

Vietnam game plan is working well. Risky but they're reaping massive rewards.

Don't think Vietnam should change much but they're really playing with fire playing out from the back when it's 3 Japanese swarming the man. It's those turnovers that could cost dearly.

Farking go Vietnam. Commentators going off here. Can't understand a word of it but they're loving it.

Watching it the hotel room here. Had no idea they were playing tonight.

Heading to the pub for the second half for sure. Dead set thought they'd get flogged.

Go you little fellas.

That header was the by best header since Duke scored against Tunisia. Absolute peach. Degree of difficulty off the charts.

@Muz, big celebrations there?

I'm lying in bed mate. Didn't know they were playing. Was being a tourist all day, had a couple of beers and flicked the tv on and they're playing. Getting ready to go out for the second half.

Hope they hold on.

Cruel. Big save by Vietnam only for Japan to equalise a minute later. The very typical roll forward pass and Minamino is able to score his second. Vietnam have spent themselves and need the HT break.

Bloody hell shot straight into Vietnam keeper and he punches it away. Japan want a 3rd before the break and here it is. An absolute belter. That's a massive blow for Vietnam and the neutral.

3:2 at HT. Vietnam great but need a break. That's such a shame Japan were able to score two. They cashed in on their class to do it.

If I recall correctly Turkmenistan scored first against Japan in 2019 with a belter too. Two more games to come today. This game is compensating those goalless draws nicely but I found Syria Uzbekistan a tense affair. China Tajikistan less so.

Still early but draws may or may not be handy for 3rd place rankings
