the sad reality is we have never done anything in football. We won the Asian Cup but even then from memory, the koreans beat us earlier in the tournament and we only played crap teams to get there. By world standards the quality was not great
I can't think of once we've we've played an overwhelming favourite and jagged a win. There has been many brave defeats but never a win for the ages.

It is utterly horrible being a fan of football in australia. But I will come back for more punishment.

It doesn't matter who we have in charge, we are a deflated balloon

Would probably have to go back to the Confeds Cup runs of 1997 and 2001 for that

Germany, Yugoslavia, USA - would have been an interesting tournament.

USA beaten you'd think. Yugoslavia and Germany a bit tough though, considering we got hammered by Croatia in a pre-tournament friendly...

Uzbekistan spends millions $$ on their football setup and has little to show for it apart from a sprinkling of decent European players over a few decades.

what the fuck are you talking about? they just won the u20 asian cup... they have been dominating asian youth football for years now.. they will see the benefits soon.

Just because they are tidy on the ball doesn't mean those nations will get anywhere in international football. Iraq famously won the Asia Cup in 2007 but won't qualify for a World Cup anytime soon and have been knocked out of this Asia Cup along with the others in your list.

Uzbekistan spends millions $$ on their football setup and has little to show for it apart from a sprinkling of decent European players over a few decades.

Whether you think Arnie In/Out, nothing will fundamentally change in terms of results until we all realise ONE important thing. That is, to produce better players, they MUST be introduced to and play at the highest domestic level at the age of 15/16 years of age. This is how it is done in Croatia, Serbia, Argentina, Uruguay etc. (even some Big 5 league nations do this too).

Melbourne Victory is a good example of doing it wrong. They have "Scholarship" (i.e apprentices or youth products) in their squad at the age of 20/21 years old. Whereas, Senegal, for example, has 20/21 years olds starting each week in the EPL. We are disadvantaging our players by at least 5-6 years compared to the rest of the world.

It's no secret that the greatest players Australia has ever produced got exposed to a high level of senior football in their early teens.

Time to put an end to Dad's Army in our domestic leagues and applaud those who seek opportunities abroad if they don't get a chance on our shores.

Improve the player base first, then we can have a discussion about the coaches.

Doesn't still exuse the fact the style we play in our national sides is not the way to go. Still maintain it's the head coaches role. Yes offcourse it starts from junior levels and club levels the technical director, but what interpretation is the head coach giving.

Regardless the minnows haven't qualified for a wc or got knocked out. The signs are there identity they want to play that's the point. Your talking about Uzbekistan there currently the Asian youth champions.

Qatar won it in 2014, means fuck all.

Japan has only won it once yet they've been able to move leaps and bounds despite their shortcomings in this tournament.

Na we were doomed by the witchdoctor in Mozambique in 1969 but John Safron lifted the curse and got us to Germany in 2006. Love this story!

The only ones I can see outside of Confeds cup, and the 2022 World Cup, is the wins over Uruguay (qualifying) and Serbia (2010). I personally wouldn't count friendlies as earth shattering either.

2014 wsw run in asian champions league
2006 qualifying and getting out of the group
2022, beating denmark is surely a big deal
2015 beating south korea in the final
confed bronze
confed final

yes its a skinny list, but its not nothing imo, especially with how light weight we are.

If you listed nations in order of 1) professional full time players 2) total transfer value of every pro player 3) full time youth coaches, where would australia rank? We are so light weight it is not funny - I'd be surprised if we are in the top 80 in the world. Next two years should have us crack the top 40 and we punch above our weight so that could lead to us being a top 20 nation in terms of rankings

what would be a significant earth shattering victory for you?

I think WSW winning the acl is probably the the equivalent of partik thistle winning the champions league. Al Hilal are the saudi national team - a team that rivals japan - yet with some foreign stars sprinkled in and they weren't even the best team they faced

No, because it is nonsense that Graeme Arnold was the best coach at the WC. I mean, think about that statement for a minute. Allow it to 60 seconds of the consideration. 'Graeme Arnold was the best of all the coaches at the WC in 2022.' And then tell me if you think that is a true and accurate statement.

hehe no counter argument from me yet one here push's that barrow continually, like whatever you read in the press rings true.

graz no point bringing in the mix Club achievements ala WSW were talking NT.

tsf might be harsh to some saying we done nothing But the Uruguay 06 quali win was of huge signifigance, probably the biggest imo and the games leading on in the WC.
That Azzuri game was of epic proportions if it not for the Grosso pen for winning that would have been so epic against one of the best NT's those eras.

For my 2 cents 1988 4-1 against the Argies and the 3-1 against Mexico in Confed were pretty earth shattering.

Other matches, for results wise, as LFC mentions the Uruguay 05 qualification (as well as the Iran 1997 away match in front of 130 thousand angry, spitting Persians and to jag a 1-1 was pretty chuffed at the time, forget that miserable MCG return :(

Recently the Denmark game last year was great but nothing else really "stands out" sadly. Maybe Japan in 2006?

Dont bother mate ... There is a reliance on Arnie having to be globally recognised in order for Australian Football to justify sticking with this lame methodology. People have wasted hundred of thousands of dollars "learning" from the Dutch Dinosaurs and if Arnold is not praised, the fact that all that money, time and resources have been wasted might come to light... Emperor's New Clothes and all that... Dont bother, the "converted" will always just find an article from Robbie Slater to quote.

Beating a really, really good side - likes of netherlands, brazil, germany, spain, argentina etc all have been beatable by teams in the past, ok, if we did serbia 4-0 in that game to go through, even the come back that looked likely against chile - there has not been many euphoric moments in BIG matches. We've been on the cusp.

Denmark were poor going into and after the WC I thought but it was still incredible to win, but mostly because we were such an average side

the teams we have beaten have nearly all been very beatable, maybe Uruguay was one that was earth-shattering in 2006 but that was cause of the significance, we had a very strong team then (as did they)

not saying we have done nothing, I love the team and have been proud many times - but there has not been much for the ages. We never look like beating a really good side I feel. Other nations around our level have achieved this,

the sad reality is we have never done anything in football...

And we don't have to. In the actual world of football rankings it is not 'first or you are nothing'. Doesn't matter that we sit outside the top 10 in rankings. What matters, and I think what you have alluded to as well, is that we want to watch quality football. We want to be able to enjoy and cheer on the good parts of our play.  We want to outplay, not outlast, lower ranked teams and compete with higher ranked teams.

We can do that but we aren't.

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

not saying we have done nothing, I love the team and have been proud many times - but there has not been much for the ages. We never look like beating a really good side I feel. Other nations around our level have achieved this,

look I pretty much agree with your posts tsf and RIMB's last one.
We're ALL proud Aussies/Roo supporters and our background is admiring "having a go" so to speak, win lose or draw.
All this analysis paralysis that is todays game and I applaud it, intel is brilliant BUT thats how we are playing due to our lack of "outlier" or game changer type of players we are yearning for for so long is it ?.
Its a game of hold stations and I question, is that our strength every single time we go out to play.
We are sitting back in fear of losing and then we don't have the arsenal to strike when that opportunity comes.
Are we lacking converting chances because our players mind set is held back ? who goes against the grain I ask when watching the games ?
Is it we lack conviction because we're so programmed in holding possession keeping the bad wolf away.

We all have been impressed by the so called minnows in this asian cup, they may lack shape defensively but damn some of their gay abandon attaxcking was like, why can't we look like this many times surely our blokes can play, let them off the leash !
