At least by then we might have a half decent squad. Yep. All of this is just a distraction from a player who may or may not be interested in Australia anyway. If someone is not 100% on board then why beg? We kind of have to beg - these type of players don't come along very often for us, so if we leave him to develop he could get to the point where he comes into calculations for Italy - around the time of qualifying for the next WC!! We should have more self-respect than that. If he wants to turn his back in the country that he was born and raised in, then he’s not a real Australian who’s committed to the cause. Hopefully he does want to play with us but if he doesn’t then meh, move on and pick someone who does. Not that simple .. to me looks like he has/had a lot of people around him pressuring him to play for Italy including Totti, Roma and Mourinho - mou even said it publicly. Think about it, your roma and one of your assets has the choice of playing for the local country where no travel is required, or a nation on the other side of the world playing against Bangladesh, Nepal, Turkmenistan, etc etc
