When I lived in Five Dock I played for St Albans Five Dock as a keeper who idolised Pat Jennings (hence the avatar). Probably started following the Socceroos during the 1970 campaign. My NSL team was Apia-Leichhardt who I still have a soft spot for. First met Terry Greedy there in the late 1980s. Followed Liverpool since Craig Johnston joined them. I followed the Balmain Tigers in the NSW RL but stopped that when they amalgamated wit the Western Suburb Magpies. At the time I worked for the CBA in Leichhardt and knew most of the Apia-Leichhardt and Balmain Tigers players.
Moved to the Central Coast and my kids played for Gosford Dragons. They also went to the local Primary School where I re-met Terry Greedy as the Deputy Principal who encouraged my kids into football. Still happy to wander down to watch the Dragons on a Saturday or Sunday for a sausage sandwich or bacon and egg roll after a heavy night and stand in the sunshine and watch a game or two.
My NPL team now is the CCM Academy (seen a few Socceroos and many now overseas players watching them), In the ALM CCMFC as most would realise.

+x+x+x+x+x[quote]I think there was a plausable argument 20 years ago that the reason why we weren't reaching our potential was because aussies don't care about football. So if we just make world cups and get big crowds in the domestic league we will go from strength to strength and produce a bunch of epl stars. It was a nice theory and sounded pretty plausible 20 years ago, after all aussies tend to do well at a lot of sports they care about, even if it is international like cricket or swimming. Now I realize that theory was hopelessly wrong Nail on the head. Unfortunately the pencilpushing fllogs in charge of the game here are utterly hellbent on riding the pale-horse of ‘mainstreaming the game/sucking up to mainstream-🇦🇺‘ & whathaveyou, ever since the Crawford Report.
Let’s face it, Hell will freeze over before those numpties finally contemplate giving up the ghost on that one. It became apparent it was the wrong strategy in the late Pim years, definitely in the Holger years. I wonder how many fans were lost because they believed that false premise? Could be part of what caused the decline. I never left because i love oz football warts and all
In principle I still bought into what FFA were selling then(mostly due to Roarcelona, ADP’s signing & Wanderers joining the league) but it wasn’t long before it began dawning on me that you’d literally need that being repeated every 2-3 seasons(4 at most) in order to maintain that growth/hype..which just wasn’t and remains implausible to this day. But back to my point, the majority of the country(ie. who FFA bend over backwards to suck up to) at the moment couldn’t be any more disinterested in ‘the sokkah’ if they tried. Even if the ‘Roos had won these past 2 WCQs handsomely, the b0g@n media still wouldn’t have mustered the pretend-carefactor to dignify it beyond the merest of blurbs - if that. (1) At what point in time will people from football nations/relatively recent ancestry outnumber bogan skips? I suspect it may take that long for the game to receive balanced media attention. (2) As long as the majority non football element has a mindset of "we are shit at it so it is not real football" media will back that. (3) It is funny that the mainstream media whores who pander to majority 'views' and outrage to sell papers no longer actually sell papers as such. With digital media/news it would actually make more sense to have a lot more pro-football reporting since those who don't like it will simply not click on articles they have no interest in (like how our front screen works) while the untapped numbers of interested followers would increase click revenue with their choices. It could also build up/re-establish an organisation's football relevance in the vacuum of genuine media attention. (4) The number of people with football interests in this country is still a huge and unexploited potential market for anyone putting thought into forums and such. A significant online football media presence/resource; well implemented, supported and advertised, with the option to discuss issues safely and constructively off the back of articles could be a magnet for keen supporters and be a good income generator too ;) 1) I remember some years back a thread on here queried that, and the general consensus of the replies was that it makes no difference - our national sporting culture’s already set in stone. To say nothing of the multitude of Aussies of migrant-background(even 1st-gen) who have zero interest in football and follow the 'traditional' codes instead. 2) Just having vested-interest in the traditional codes already gives them reason to oppose us, though I agree that it is a factor. 3) You’d think so but again, see answer to (2) 4) Obviously..but mainstream 🇦🇺 media will never back it; not across-the-board anyway. That’s why apart from Optus/BeIn/Stan/Ch10&Paramount+ involvement, the best we’ve got are forums like these and #SokkahTwitter on X..😔

+xI'm curious on the here how many people follow a league, npl or just socceroos. Should we do a poll? I think everyone knows that I’m a diehard Adelaide United fan and will watch all of their games. I’ll also watch as many AL games as I can. I watch most Socceroo games but I’m not really emotionally invested in the national team anymore. I might watch the odd Adelaide United youth team game but I don’t watch NPL but I’ll check the results regularly. I also play at grassroots level.

I’m a football lover no what matter where it is, overseas or local I will always watch football.
I think it’s good to watch the more football you can, it grasps more knowledge and insight into the game I feel shoehorning into one aspect of the sport just gives me a narrow view.
The local level is good for supporting the local scene, whilst keeping an eye on the next gen of players and coaches whilst overseas you see the very best and how it’s played at the top level.

When it really comes down to it the only team I want to do well, care properly about and kills me is Australia.

+xI now only follow the Socceroos and Leeds. I want the NPL clubs to get off the canvas and make something but there's too much in the way for that to happen. I was a fan of the A-League but now would rather like to see it die with something stuck in its arse. As you won’t answer 🤣, you are part of the problem in this country.

There’s obvious problems with the AL why so so many invested in the game don’t support it - it’s not general supporters that’s for sure.
