Tommycash wrote:Yeah i've always hated the eastern states bias on this site. but what more can we expect from them? good signing of Jukic. those squads have no hope of materialising i think. they'll be a few new names im sure but not 3 current socceroos. thats asking a bit much. Coyne and Sterjovski are a possibility though so Chipperfield, not all three. Lets hope that Pim suggests coming to the A-League for Coyne cause he's playing League 1, about the same quality. It did wonders for Craig Moore.

Yay, we have Sukic signed up with the senior squad, Scott Neville aswell?
I'd wish Pim would hurry up and push Coyney over the line, that is, the line to sign with us! These articles make me worry lol.
If we get Coyne, then it's onto that quality overseas player or two. I think if we somehow got Mile Sterjovski aswell then that would be almost too good to be true. Though I think it could be true, as we may well have the cap space AND have the Marquee spot free. Mile could be alongside Dadi as our 2nd striker. And we're still a Visa player or two short ofcourse and that left side is screaming for some class out there, LB/LWB that is. In concert with that need, I have not heard or seen anything about Sekulovski re-signing with us either, so along with Rizzo's departure, this could indicate we have some serious options/replacements lined up! 8) We also need a decent striker for depth, on top of Mile, especially as Mile could just aswell play Wide Right for us (With Pellegrino in the middle). :o So ontop of Coyne, hopefully Stejovski + a good left sided defender, perhaps a Visa player (Cassio-esque) and maybe a half decent striker for the rotation. The return of the Mrdja? :D Guy is such a gun, just back from injury for Mariners and he still scores in losing final couple weeks ago. He scored as many goals this season (3) as McCallister (4), but played far fewer games/minutes on the field (Mrdja 541 mins to McCallister 1354 mins). And that's also a better goal/mins/atts ratio than Sasho Petrovski. Though I'm sure we all know how good he can be. Injuries or not, let's bring him home. :)
Coyne, Sterjovski + Mrdja AND Roberto Carlos (Marquee) - his 2 year contract with Fenerbahce is up end of this season, though he has a 1 year option. lol
lol
We could always try Celestine Babayaro as a 'project' but we saw what happened when the Jets tried that with Jardel lol and Babayaro already had false start with LA Galaxy, last year.
Seriously, I'm sure Mitch will find some one, not necessarily of profile. Hopefully Sagey sends him off to South America, Asia or somewhere, to scout.

I wouldn't take Mrdja - sure, some good memories but we've just endured other glass footballers like Foxe, Trinidad, Tarka etc. If we want any chance of making the finals, we have to have a fully fit squad of players who will push for selection. TS was average this year because with Foxe and Tarka injured, the Djulbic mind-snap there was no-one fighting for his spot.
Mitch will not want any passengers.

We've signed Neville and Sekulovski again as well. heard were chasing birmingham and former EPL striker Kevin Phillips. hes 35 and possibly over the hill but i trust Dave that hes still good. so that would rule out Mrdja.

kevin phillips for real? well ever since dadi proved that age was no factor i trust mitchells judgement. i feel a lot of you fellas are getting a little carried away thinking we could fit both coyne and sterj under the cap without one being a marquee. im really hopeful we get just one at least, coyne will sure up our defence and wont command a marquee spot and sterjovski is a gun going forward id be happy with either.

If you want Sterjovski you'll have to pay him a lot more than $300,000. Because thats what we offered him. Roberto Carlos and Phillips are good marquee options.
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Too be honest i dont think Sterj is even an option for us. hed be great but we wont get him. Coyne maybe. that would be awesome. if Sterj looked a possibility then Dave wouldn't go for a player of Phillips calibre and position and cost.

Wow ... just heard the tony sage interview posted on the other thread ....
I am very impressed by Tony Sage, and his commitment to glory .... his vision is simular to the vision of the glory fans which defintely make me love the guy! What he said about glory winning the asian champions league just shows how much he loves the club as much as we all do on this forum.
Tony said Chris Coyne and Mile had confirmed perth is where they wanted to go ... which is brilliant ... just a matter of sorting out contracts and whatnot ... but yet saying that im sure its much more complicated then that lol
from one topic to another .... I cant stand WA and its bias against football in this state, even in australia for that matter. AFL pre-season cup news beats news about the a league grand final? seriously WTF??? channel 7 is the most bias station out of them all ... and did u hear on that tony sage interview the fact that the government dont want to support football in this state either ... just ads to it :(

Please no talk of bringing Mrdja
How he scores is a mystery to me. Yes he can whack it with his left but that is all he has goot. I imagine he would struggle against any quality defender or defence as he is a one trick pony.

Quote: Jamie Coyne can see flip side of Verbeek PERTH Glory captain Jamie Coyne has no problem with national coach Pim Verbeek's criticism of the standard of the A-League. Coyne, who could begin a loan stint in the Korean league next month before returning to Glory next season, said cultural differences might explain Verbeek's appraisal of the A-League. "No one likes criticism, but I think it's honest criticism," he said. "I think he's trying to be as honest as possible, which is a very Dutch way -- they don't beat around the bush." Verbeek described the efforts Melbourne Victory duo Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp as "absolutely hopeless" in the first Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia. "I still think he believes that the players are good enough to do the job, otherwise I don't think he'd pick any of them for any competition," Coyne said. "What he wants is for people to realise that there is some improvement still to go in certain areas, but that will come with the longer the league's running." Coyne said he believed the quality of play had improved over the A-League's first four seasons and would continue to do so. "The skill level and the intensity of the games is increasing and obviously that makes it a more exiting game for everyone," he said. With the Socceroos in a commanding position to secure a spot at the 2010 World Cup, it is hard to fault Verbeek. But while Football Federation Australia this week publicly backed his right to criticise, officials are likely to be concerned at the damage the Dutchman could be inflicting on the domestic competition. Coyne, who had an impressive season in the centre of midfield, admitted he was disappointed not to be among the 24 A-League players chosen for the Socceroos squad to play Kuwait in the Asian Cup qualifier in Canberra on Thursday. "To play for Australia is something I strive to do," he said. "I do think it helps if you're playing in a team that's winning every week. If you're playing with a lot of confidence things seem to go your way and you stand out as a player more." http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25118785-11088,00.html Interesting, but we're a baby competition, we'll grow over time. :)

Worst player to play more than a season for Glory ever. Almost as bad as Adrian Webster for changeroom harmony. Can't believe he could ever be considered for Socceroos duty. Scott Neville has shown in his handful of games at right back more than Coyne has shown in an entire career. And when Coyne plays midfield, he does nothing but get in the way of his teammates. Complete waste of space.

Quote: Sekulovski can make Socceroos, says coach
Perth Glory coach David Mitchell has boldly claimed Naum Sekulovski can be a surprise Socceroos inclusion as Australia’s Dutch boss Pim Verbeek increasingly relies on the A-League contingent for Asian Cup qualifiers. Sekulovski has signed a new deal to stay with Glory next season and Mitchell believes the 26-year-old can force his way into contention for a Socceroos call-up by concentrating on the left back position. Glory is the only Australian A-League club without a player in the Socceroos squad for Thursday’s Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait at Canberra Stadium. Striker Nikita Rukavytsya, who left Glory to join Dutch club FC Twente in January, would have been a likely contender, while defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley is in the squad but has transferred to Newcastle Jets. But Mitchell said he expected a number of Glory players to stake a claim for a green-and-gold shirt by performing well next season in an A-League set to expand to 10 teams with the introduction of Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury. “I certainly think we’ve got a few players capable of getting in the squad,” Mitchell said. “This might surprise a lot of people but if Naum has a good pre-season and nails a spot at left back, I think he can be good enough to be called into the Socceroos squad. “But it’s got to be drilled into him that he’s a left back — because he’s quick and strong. It’s about convincing him that he’s not a left midfielder or a striker. “To be fair to Naum, he’s worked his socks off for us and I think he will have another good season.” Mitchell also felt midfielder Wayne Srhoj, skipper Jamie Coyne, goalkeeper Tando Velaphi and midfielder Adriano Pellegrino could catch Verbeek’s eye. “Pim did have a look at Srhoj when he first came here but the team didn’t play well and he wasn’t really match fit,” Mitchell said.
http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=4&ContentID=127517mmmm. donno what to say about that, needs to improve a little, saying that, T-S got into the squad so anyone can!

If Chippers signed for Glory, would it be better to play him at left-back, left-wing or possibly even up front?
I personally think it'd be best to have a quality player where he can do the most damage ie in the attacking third. Problem is that then leaves a massive hole at full-back (so few A-League players play the position well).
Since we have Sikora at left mid, signing Chippers would probably be as a left-back. Then sign a quality young striker and a marquee central midfielder (Appiah). Or sign a quality young midfielder and a marquee striker (Crespo).
If the club promotes guys like Boi, Jukic, Skorich, Neville and Aleksic to the senior squad along with Doyle and Magdic then hopefully we would have room under the salary cap for both Coyne and Chipperfield allowing us to sign a big-name foreign marquee.

Chippers would be best as a left-back ... but used in an attacking sence like cassio ... as we already have sikora as left mid ... and i dont think chippers would be suited to playing up front ... and thats if we sign him ...
just read an article on the world game website by the way ... mile sterjovski said he doesnt want to come to the a-league anytime soon and is happy at the rams ...
why dont we target josip skoko? he would be a great attacking centre mid next to shroj

Thanks for posting the article Southern3.
Well, seems Naum's been re-signed then. :p And aswell as that, if Mitchell is talking like that about Naum (Albeit with the proviso he has a good pre-season + season lol) then it may suggest, as some of you have hinted, that we may not be so confident about securing Chippers or ANY quality LB for our team.
I still advocate, if we don't get Chippers then surely we should use a Visa spot for a good quality LB, another Cassio, or an Asian/African-Cassio or something!
Teams this season have utilise 5 Visa players and atm Glory only have 2 signed (Sikora and Dadi) with maybe a third to be re-signed (Amaral).
Other visa guy should be a second Striker to replace Ruka' or a decent AM to replace Trinidad (Or just bring back Trinidad, if we're desperate :p).
Mitchell complains that we can't attract or compete for the leading Aussie talent, due, inpart to our geogrpahci isolation from the Eastern States. But as we've seen with Dadi especially, having decent foreigners cann do alot to bringing in that quality needed, especially in a snowball effect kind of way - re-placing quality, fulfilling quality void, attracting more quality, encouraging quality play from team mates and lifting team's performance/standard, aswell as, in Dadi's case, bringing that entertainment value and perhaps good value off the field, in promotion, publicity, advertising etc...
Having 5 Visa places was introduced largely as a band aide to help support the expansion clubs and the clubs who's squads may be effected by their recruiting/poaching, from them and the general talent pool.
But Perth is the least of these to be affected, not seriously anyway, yet Glory could easily benefit the most from utilising these 5 spots and indeed could be one club who truly utilises all 5 spots (No spots wasted on Kiwis or forth rate Poms *cough* Robinson *cough*).

Edited by gloryperth: 4/3/2009 03:45:58 AM I'm pretty confident that Mitchell can bring someone good along. So far he's brought Dadi, Amaral and Trinidad, all who have been a reasonable sucess when they're playing.

Yeah for me Mitchell is a great recruiter. while resigning Robinson will remain a mystery for me I'm sure he cant make the same mistake twice. I think looking at some African leagues could be a good move. though an unlikely one if im honest.
