In the paper last saturday ... Mitchell was looking at Kevin Phillips who currently plays for Birmingham in the championship ... obviously used to play at a number of premier league clubs .... had the most successi think when he was at sunderland if i remember correctly.
Providing Birmingham dont get promoted to the premier league, i would seriously offer this guy marquee. Even though his 35 (dont let age fool you these days, as dadi is 35 yet still dominating, aka. look at del piero, maldini etc.) he will still posses great quality. And his a medium build player, not exactly a massive guy like dadi but yet again not a smaller biuld fast pace guy like ruka.
If we can get him, which mitchell said he was interested, and is mates with the birmingham coach, that would be a great buy.
As mentioned ... yes i agree mitchell is a great recruiter. Amaral, dadi, trinidad and sikora all looked the goods. I would defintely sign up trinidad though, i dont think many people rate him but i do rate him highly indeed. Just his high skill level, and he also has the ability to bring other into the game, and also start things from nothing.
If i was manager though i would of approached nicky ward long ago, his contract is expriring now at the victory, and i would love to see him back in glory colours, especially playing that attacking midfielder role.
sign up wardy mitch!

Yeah, I'd take Ward, especially in the context that we could fit him under the cap and he'd be strengthening a position where we're currently weak. Aswell as he being a prodigal son returning home. :P
And just one more whinge regarding Coyne's doubts - Coyney, if you joined us, we could win things! We/you could play ACL! You will play Asian Cup with the Socceroos! With Colchester, could you do any of that?
Chris Coyne, please come home!

Marquee for Perth
Coyne - Not marquee standard Sterjovski - Wont come back IMO Chippers - Not to Perth
Others.... Perth should look for a Foreign marquee player such as Hasslebank or even Hakan Sukur the list goes on...

None of us have suggested Coyne be Marquee - he'd be under the cap only.
Stejovski has indeed suggested recently that he's now happy at Derby.
Chippers we're very much in with a shot, whether he'll be our Marquee or we can manage to snap him up as a Non-Marquee. Especially as it seems our only competition is Newcastle, with the notoriously miserly, amongst other things, Mr Constantine.

to be honest i think chippers is stalling because no one wants to make him marquee and so he is trying to drive his price up. i honestly think he is coming home but to which team remains unanswered. if i another 2 mths we havent used the marquee spot up and his still available i think we should give it to him but there is definitely better players out there.

It would be ironic if Chippers signed, seeing as he helped mastermind our downfall in 2000.

Chippers will be worth it, just for the extra strength in defense and providing a solid, technical partner for Sikora on the left.
I'd rather someone like Phillips as marquee though, but you'd wouldn't want anyone slower than that as a strike partner for Dadi (ie Hasselbaink & Sukur etc). Having said that, would consider Kanu who's contract is up in June. Some other players I'd consider who are on Bosmans and haven't seen much playing time:
Steven Appiah Nuno Valente Lee Hendrie Didi Hamann Olivier Dacourt Mineiro David Connolly
Thats just players I can think of in the UK. With a Frenchman, a Dutch guy and a Brazilian all enjoying their time here in Perth, we should be able to attract a range of imports. Might be hard to sell our city to mediterranean players - Perth shuts way too early, any Spaniard would go hungry when he finds the restaurant kitchens shut at 9:30!

Benjo wrote:It would be ironic if Chippers signed, seeing as he helped mastermind our downfall in 2000. Don't forget Chippers actually DID have a contract with Perth Glory once. We signed him from Wolves on the proviso that he didn't get a contract in Europe. Of course he *did* get a contract in Europe and so never wore the purple-and-orange. glorywonderland wrote:Steven Appiah Nuno Valente Lee Hendrie Didi Hamann Olivier Dacourt Mineiro David Connolly Of that list I'd love to see Appiah, Dacourt or Hamann signed as marquees but I think only Appiah would be a chance. Valente would be a good pickup as he can play left-back. Hendrie would probably be a flop (like all Englishmen at Glory) and Mineiro and Connolly probably aren't quite high-profile enough. Hernan Crespo is the other name I would add to the list of "potential marquees better than Kevin Phillips".

i think you could pretty much rule crespo off any wish list. he still has ambitions to make the argie WC squad so if Pim looks down upon the a-league i can only imagine what maradonna would think of such a move.

For me Crespo would be a bigger deal than Fowler, and I'm a Liverpool supporter saying that. I think he was TRULY world class. He'd be a gun in this league.
From the list posted above I think Appiah still has a career in Europe, and is possibly injury prone anyway. Hamann is one of my favourite ever Liverpool players and I think he'd do well - his game was never about pace so the fact he's got older and slower won't matter much. Dacourt is worth a shout, however the rest of the players on the list wouldn't really have the crowd pull or make much difference on the field.
To be honest I'd rather see Perth signing Cassios and Carloses - hopefully Robson and Jefferson at GCU will turn out to be similar quality. Foreign imports of the right age with their best in front of them, able to bring us glory on the field for more than just a single season.

targeting crespo would be a long shot ... even targeting philips i think is a long shot ... as the championship is still better pay and better quality
I would target a high profile player from the lower placed clubs in the J-league ... there was one player for the Pohang steelers who was quality when i saw him against adelaide .... Denilson ... i would offer him marquee ... great attack minded midfielder and very creative ... and im sure a-league clubs may have a better chance of lureing players from top flight asian leagues rather than top flight european leagues.
But yeh Steven Appiah aswell im a big fan of, dont know why anyone has approached him yet.
Even maybe offering carl valeri a contract? i think his contract expires soon from his serie B team

I guess it depends on how you view the marquee issue. Is it for high profile signings like Yorke, Aloisi and Culina, potentially hazardous with past flops like Jardel and Deane. Or is it just to accommodate a highly effective player, like J Griffiths, Moore, Archie etc into the team? Personally, I think the latter - especially in Perth where if you aren't winning, the crowds won't come and anyone short of a Beckham or Ronaldo can't change that.
grubbavitch - you're right, ideally we should be finding players like Cassios etc who have something to offer for longer than a season or 2. However, I wouldn't even know where to start, so I just listed some players from my limited memory of players who are coming to the end of their top flight European careers.
We have some talented youth coming through - Tando, Neville, Jukic, Skorich, Boi, Griffiths and maybe Doyle if he solves whatever it is holding him back when he plays in the A-league. A good backbone in Harnwell, Shroj, Pelle, Sikora and Dadi. Possible options in Amaral, Trinidad. Just need 2 solid CBs and and a LB, maybe as part of the 3 quality overseas players to complete the playing group.
All we can hope is that our football department know where to look in the right places...

Quote:Perth Glory will give outstanding young West Australian defender Scott Neville a chance to fulfil his dream of playing at the highest level in the country after signing the 20 year old for the next three seasons.
Neville was a standout in the Glory’s National Youth League team and made the most of a call-up to the senior squad late in the season where he produced several telling performances that cemented coaching staff opinion of his enormous potential.
“Scott came into the squad and stepped up to the plate straight away and I have no doubt he’ll be able to continue to develop and will be a real asset for Perth Glory,” Coach Dave Mitchell said.
Neville has enjoyed an exciting year in his football progression after helping local club Sorrento FC win the WA Premier League title prior to embarking on the inaugural season of the National Youth League. The young defender blossomed in the new competition and earned a debut Hyundai A-League appearance as a substitute on New Years Eve against Central Coast.
Neville made his starting debut at Members Equity Stadium the following week in Perth’s impressive 3-2 win against Melbourne Victory and marked his 20th birthday with a performance that captured the attention of football commentators across the country.
“I set myself to perform consistently in the Youth Team and hoped to get an opportunity to play with the Glory in the A-League and when it came around I was really happy. Now to have a contract for the next three years just tops it all off,” Neville said.
“I know that I have a lot more to learn and can’t wait for pre-season training to get started so I can continue to improve and hopefully push for more game time,” said Neville.
The youngster is part of the next-generation of West Australian footballers who grew up watching Glory sides take all before them and is determined to ensure the club’s passionate members and supporters in the stands enjoy similar experiences next season and beyond.
“The Glory is a great club and I’m really proud to be here. There is a lot of determination in the squad to make this a great season and to be part of that will be a dream for me,” Neville said.
“To have guys like Gareth Naven and Scott Miller (Perth’s Youth Team Coaches and former club champions) helping me was fantastic. They said ‘never let the grass grow under your feet, continue to work hard and have the right attitude to achieve your goals’. I haven’t forgotten that and I’m thankful for being part of the Youth Team which has helped me get to where I am now.”
Neville is the second Glory National Youth League player to receive a senior contract following the club’s signing of midfielder Andrija Jukic last week.

Quote:Perth Glory has retained the services of talented player Naum Sekulovski for the next two seasons following a standout campaign in which he established himself as the club’s first choice left-back.
Sekulovski, who joined Glory for their first Hyundai A-League season, has played a variety of positions for the club but was handed the challenge of left stopper last season and flourished in the role.
“Last season was a real positive for me, I enjoyed playing at left-back and think it’s a position that I can make my own and hopefully that will also assist the team to reach the finals next season,” said Sekulovski.
“Being able to play in a position consistently was beneficial for me and I always got the backing of Mitch (Coach Dave Mitchell) and the other coaches which helped the transition to left-back,” Sekulovski added.
Head Coach Dave Mitchell believes Sekulovski’s combination of skill, stamina and pace will makes him an ideal candidate for a key position in the back four.
“Naum has been shipped all over the place in the past but I’ve said to him that I want him in the left back position and we’ll work with him over the pre-season to ensure he continues to develop into that important role for the club,” Mitchell said.
“He showed some excellent signs last season and will only get better with the more time he spends playing there.
“Naum is passionate about the club and gives his all at training and in games and I’m pleased that he’ll be around for the next couple of seasons,” added Mitchell.
The 26 year old has pulled on the boots for Perth in 61 Hyundai A-League matches with only Jamie Harnwell (77) and Jamie Coyne (73) playing more games in Glory colours than Sekulovski in the past four seasons.
“There is so much potential here and I feel we’re building something really strong at the club and wanted to stay around and be part of that.
“Next season is a big one for the club and for me and I’m confident I can make a positive contribution and get Perth Glory back to the top of the league,” Sekulovski said. Both of these signing have been in the mix for a while. still its good to get them confirmed.

Edited by tommycash: 5/3/2009 07:51:06 PM I don't see either of those signings as an indication that Glory won't sign Chippers. Sekulovski is the sort of player every squad needs (even if he's not a particularly good footballer) and Neville is the obvious right-back for next season and possibly years to come. Hope not too many more of the 'in doubt' guys get contracts though. The likes of Tarka and Bulloch (and J.Coyne?) need to be shafted ASAP.

Yeah Mitchell's comments do not imply, I guess, that he is seeking a player who may supplant Sekulovski for that position. It suggests Mitchell already 'kind of' has his mind set on Sekulovski playing there, for the time being. Though ofcourse no one's place is guaranteed and technically we're not even into the swing of the off-season, silly season, so to speak, with players moving about everywhere, new ones coming in.
I'm hopeful Mitchell is still looking at Chippers or a Visa player, or any quality (Aussie?) to play/compete for that LB spot, though. But not as hopeful as before.
Oh well, just means Mitch's efforts are focussed on gathering quality, Visa or otherwise, elsewhere on the park.

Both Chippers and Sekulovski can play left back, left midfield OR striker. Of course Chippers is better than Naum in all three positions, and Sikora is better than Naum at left mid or up front. I'm more and more thinking a Chippers-Dadi forward combination would be awesome. Sikora and Pellegrino on the wings. Sign a foreigner to compete with Naum at left back and Appiah as the marquee!

yehhh ... agree with your thoughts
still dont think chippers should be up front with dadi though ... next to dadi we need a good finisher and a guy with pace ... chippers isnt an out and out striker, does get goals here and there, but not a genuine trained striker. Would much prefer him at left back, but very attack minded left back who pushes up often like cassio.
