5777 was the old record, set in 2007, so maybe Glory reached 6000 this season?

I find that interesting, curious even - given Glory had the crowds they did, back from 1998-2003 or so. Obviously back then we didn't actually have a great deal many members?

I think the crowds were ok considering the crap start we've had since the inception of the A-League. Not only have we managed to sustain the numbers, especially in light of that infamous Wellington crowd figure, but we grew a little over the previous couple seasons. Sure some of those numbers might've been bumped up by free tickets, but atleast we got the numbers and maybe some of them may buy tickets proper, maybe even become members, in the future.

I truly think, with the positive display we put on in the back half of the season and Perth now familiar with the likes of Dadi and even Mitchell, that we may see the best start to the season, crowds wise, that we've seen since V1 - we could even match the 9-10k avg we achieved in V1 - especially if our team finally achieves a good start to the season - like top 4 come November.

This season was an important transitional season in many ways. We can all see the vibe is substantially different end of this season, that it has been EVER since the A-L started. Things are feeling quite positive, our squad is very promising after a decent finish to the season and amidst that we've retained most of them and recouped a good return from the departure of Ruka. Mitchell actually has done a reasonable job and with us retaining him, we have some stability atlast.

Under Mitchell, we've brought in impressive recruits like Victor Sikora, who we never would've imagined we could get, back in the days before Mitchell. And Mitch's eye has also unearthed the likes of Pellegrino and gave opportunity to true young talent like Velaphi and Scott Neville.

So the promise some of us may feel is actually based on substance for once. So we're looking forward to Mitch and Sagey building on that promise and taking us to that next level, of a genuine finals contender, maybe even title contender, next season. As we fans know it's reasonable to expect this, as it's not so far a leap now, with what we have already, with Mitch and the present squad.

This Everton friendly is important symbolically as it could be a stamp proving to all, of Glory's revival and may provide the impetus, the public awareness, getting Glory talk around the water cooler again, for our membership record to be broken once more and for those opening A-League crowds to break 10-11k!

Edited by gloryperth: 13/3/2009 04:17:33 AM

I totally agree with that, the 9k we got for the Melbourne game, the rise was probably caused by the groups of fans who recieved free tickets coming back and buying them. And we can all help by inviting everyone we know to the games and getting groups of friends and family getting together and enjoying an awesome team!

nice words there gloryperth, and i do agree.

We all know that glory finish the second half of the season stronger, if only we can nail the first 10 or so games and get some good results early on, i think we will be looking at a finals berth. And with mitch having the courage to get rid of dead wood from the ron smith era, and just retaining quality players, along with recruiting quality players, i am hoping that success for glory is just around the corner!

I think the crowds will come if we can get consistent, and early results. Because results = positive news in the media such as on TV, in the paper, and on the net. People read and view this type of media everyday, once good vibes about glory travel around town, the crowds should be an average of 10k or more per week i hope, just like the old days.

Gosh you should of seen my face when we had that boxing day crowd against adelaide, i was like a little kid who got his first erection, i was that excited to see the crowd as it was that day and really reminded me of the old times, people flocking the streets, purple everywhere, great atmosphere, i really want to see that more often next season :)

Maybe because in their eyes the NSL didn't exist and hence records don't count :-$

Only possible if Sage puts up after all he has gas-bagged about

Don't get too rose-tinted, Mitch only played Tando after persisting with Juric too long and then turning to Statue Petkovic which was catastrophic. Neville should of been given some game time earlier, and don't forget he brought in McLaren...

the crowd against welly had more to do with the poor timing of the game then any other factor. the local league GF's were being played along with the WAFL grand final. that obviously stole away a large portion of fans. other than results the best way to fix up our poor crowd numbers is with better scheduling ie dont play a game the day the redbull air race is on as 300k+ people will not be considering going to the football.

I wish the Glory Vs Everton friendly would be broadcast live on free to air television or fox ... that would be great to boost glory's profile. Sydney get free to air tv when they vs galaxy, but glory cant .... which sux badly

sage was saying that game was bought by the league or something along those lines thats why it was on FTA. Oh well I'm sure a packed MES is just as positive. Thats 10 - 15k more attendance that don't regularly go to a Glory game so if we manage to keep just a quarter of them we would be looking at regular season attendances of 12k or so.

Thanks guys. Actually Glory Wonderland, I'm actually not unlike you in being a little more cautious, but I can have a tendency to get a little excited at times lol. I know Sagey and co, we need to see these things happening, not just talked about.

Though 'talking' about that...

I hear on the Everton front, Perth AND Sydney are locked in, BUT Everton waits on Wellington as it prefers as 3rd fixture now, in it's tour. I read it in some article about some other A-League issue, but that brief statement made no mention of the Gold Coast, which surprises me. But Sydney AND Gold Coast may be seen as eastern states overkill for Everton? lol at eastern states - suffer! :p Obviously by playing in Wellington they can draw on/appeal to the whole NZ market - spreading their reach further.

So once we have that sorted, it's onto to how we sort pre-season, including tours/fixtures around/preceding that Marquee Friendly in July and who we recruit/re-sign in pre-season. I'm interested to see how Amaral goes in what is essentially 're-trial' fitness wise in April. Hopefully he scores more than a pass mark, but a distinction.

We currently have 12 players signed on for the 2009/10 season AFAIK? Including 1 or the 3 required Under 20 players, in Neville. And Hayden Doyle would be the second I think, IF we re-sign him. Doyle was only one a 1 year contract. Doyle plus 5 other players = unconfirmed, AFAIK, that's Tarka, Bulloch, Magdic and Lee.

So IF we re-sign all those 6 then we have 18 players, including 2 Visa spots already filled. So that leaves us with 5 free spots, including 1/2 Under 20s, 2-3 more Visa players including/or a Marquee, we're still to get.

Some major signing announcements will surely be on the way, over the next few months, leading up to that July Fixture. Our full strength squad for the 09/10 season SHOULD be on show for that fixture too, if we're organised in our recruiting, Marquee and all. Though Mitch has stated we could delay a Marquee signing even into the season, if it's worth it, to MAKE SURE they have the right guy.

BTW With the capacity of MES - aside from it being extended temporarily for that match - I hear a bit about Western Force are seriously planning to move in soon and if they do, then MES will alost certainly be expanded to a capacity of 25k atleast, maybe 30k. But this Force talk relates to the Kitchener stadium proposal, which seems to be on hiatus atm, or there's some discussion/debate going on atm about the stadium.

The Everton v Wellington idea looks to be a lost cause now.
Quote:
Everton versus Wellington match increasingly unlikely
13.03.09 | Andrew Slevison
It seems certain that the proposed friendly between Wellington Phoenix and English Premier League club Everton will not go ahead.

Everton and Wellington have not been able to agree terms for the match which was to be held in either New Zealand or Australia in July.

"July 18 our pre-season tour starts. Just talking with Everton, they'd want to come towards the end of July, which may not fit. We don't want to bring out a team that's not going to have their first team players available. If they can't do that then we'll pass,” said Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata.

Pignata has confirmed that the club will be meeting with officials from Fulham to stage a similar match to that proposed with Everton.

Thanks for that hmmm, if Everton are persistent on a third, then hopefully Gold Coast or the Roar could host them. Would be nice if Adelaide could, seeings like us, they rarely draw such games due to their stadium issues. Melbourne would be the other logical option.

Hopefully they settle on two though as from what I remember that was what was essentially promised to Sagey through 'If we can find one more Aussie team to play' clause, which they have done now, in securing Sydney FC.

Hopefully they haven't 'moved the goal posts' proper, especially if the likelihood of a third match is getting unlikely (Therefore them pulling out is on the cards). That would p off two A-League clubs and their supporters alot!

Looking forward to seeing you jump back on the bandwagon, once we're top of the league. ;) :p

Well whatever is going on, let's hope this thing is resolved in our favour, soon. As big delays when it comes to these things can often = bad signs ala delay in Scott Chipperfield signing for Nth QLD and now Newcastle tbh.

Sage brought up his talks with Everton a few weeks ago now, atleast. Seems quite a while ago. I don't want to be a pessimist though. But yeah, like Glory's former management, one can get more done, if there is less bureaucracy/less people involved, or having to NOT to rely on others. If they only wanted to play Glory then this would've already had been sorted and announced weeks ago.

Wow, two naysayers already. We will do better than we have, so far in the A-League, that's for sure. Looking forward to Mitch building on an already impressive squad base, over the next few months.

And will the Perth based naysayers be turning up for the Everton friendly?

I think that we need to make finals next season.
well not need.
its just a masssive want.
we'd get big crowds if that happened.
and then we could work on getting back to our high horse.

robinson .... as state league player is better than him.

mind you ... as what always happens with ex glory players ... they do well at their new clubs ... eg. celeski, ward, caceras, pondejlak etc.

So far topor stanley has done shit in the one game that his played in acl, im hoping rizzo and robinson still stay below par for glory's sake lol
