Seems a shame, but Benjo Sydney FC got their end together too, but Everton suddenly want MORE fixtures, despite apparently telling Sagey initially that they only required one more fixture for it to go ahead. Phoenix turning them down didn't help though.

Hopefully we can host another decent club (Celtic? (Scotty :)), and hopefully we do not have to be limited to big British clubs either - Victory hosted Juventus before - It would be nice to see a Milan, Inter, Valencia or a Galatasaray (Harry :)), if they can.

if we can swap the game for a better recruiting trip that results in a good signing i know which one i would pick. the possibility of playing finals, making the ACL would definitely come first. mitchell did a good job last season so i have no reason to doubt his ability of picking up some gems this time around. i think if sage didnt come out in that radio interview spouting off about 3 possible socceroos i could happily sit here content for now but he did somewhat raise my expectations.

In the Sunday Times it mentions Mitchell trying to sign Sterj. However Derby would need to release him because Glory can't afford a transfer fee. It also mentions Wolverhampton defender Jody Craddock.

And I also have to laugh at this comment from the Sunday Times. "WA's own Cristiano Ronaldo..." Yes you read correctly. Apparently his grandparents live here so that means he's now ours. Now I'm just waiting for the rumour mill to churn out a 'Glory set to sign Ronaldo'.

Very pleasing to read about Coyne.
Though i'm earmarking the season after next for his homecoming.
Yeah the way they wrote WA's own Christiano Ronaldo was a bit embarrasing.

Seems we'll still have to wait a couple seasons for Coyne (Past WC and when his contract expires) and by then he may be 33 or something and if a big guys like he continues to suffer injuries, he may not last too long for Glory, not unlike Popovic at SFC and others.

I'd wish he'd come for this season, then go on loan to China or where ever he may need at season's end. If he came now, he'd still be at his peak, solve/lead our defence and suddenly we're title contenders. AND he could possibly contribute to the Glory on the field for 3-4 seasons.

But it's obviously too difficult to manage now, WC aside, given we'd have to pay quite a transfer fee, unless they agree to release him from his contract (unlikely).

BTW That Boy-Boy Mosia left his South African League club in Jan/Feb, so I'd reckon he'd be worth a trial. According to the article linked to his wiki, he left because his club lacked professionalism or something. Certainly Glory would be professional enough, that's for sure.

And that Teko Modise, he's way out of our league it seems, as the likes of WBA and AEK Athens were interested in him, around the time of that friendly we played against the South Africans, with Tony Mowbray even in the stands to watch him. He's a star for the NT and has lit up the domestic league - he's tipped for a European move in the off season.

The thing I'm gauging is that many South Africans ofcourse have bag loads of talent, but a fair few, not unlike a few AFC countries, do not have the application, drive, adaptability required to last in Europe. I gauge the PSL's wages too, may compare similarly to ours too, or not much more maybe (Can't say for sure)? So the A-League could well be a viable gateway for South Africans, if they want to go onto Europe? It would also be a good gateway for players from places like Iran, China etc... But we simply can't offer the wages they command in their leagues or leagues in their region, obviously.

How's this for a Marquee Striker - Sylvain Wiltord! His contract is up at Marseille, end of this season and while he may be 34/35, he's been playing fairly regularly in the French Top flight since leaving Arsenal. He's certainly a cut or two above the likes of Phillips and he'd be a huge marquee. All French forward line, Dadi and Wiltord, would be too cool - goals and entertainment galore!

Quote:
Socceroos will come home: Coyne

SOCCEROOS defender Chris Coyne says he does not think Pim Verbeek's recent comments about the A-League will deter players from returning to play in Australia.

Verbeek expressed concerns about Jason Culina signing for Gold Coast United ahead of the 2010 World Cup and was pleased Scott Chipperfield had turned down a move to North Queensland Fury.

However, Coyne, who will be looking to win his sixth international cap against Uzbekistan next Wednesday in Sydney, said the A-League was becoming a more attractive option.

"I think the A-League as a whole is becoming more attractive, otherwise you wouldn't get players like of the calibre of Jason Culina and Craig Moore coming back," Coyne said.

"Preferably Pim would want everyone playing before the World Cup so he has got some selection headaches, and with players over there being out of season for three months before it starts, it is not ideal.

"But I don't think this will deter anyone from coming home if it is the right decision to make for themselves and their career."

Coyne, who has had an injury-plagued season for English League One side Colchester, is earmarked as a replacement for the injured Moore ahead of the World Cup qualifier at ANZ Stadium. The 30-year-old was singled out for praise by Verbeek for his performances against Uzbekistan, Holland and Ghana last year despite his relative inexperience at senior international level.

Despite spending most of his career in England in the Championship and League One with Luton and now Colchester, which forked out a club record £350,000 ($A740,000) to sign him, the Brisbane-born defender said growing up with 70 per cent of the present squad made it an easy transition for him.

"A lot of this team are around the same age group and have grown up together and played at state level against each other and for the Olyroos and the Joeys, so … fitting in with the boys was no problem," he said.

Despite two years left on his contract at Colchester Coyne is thinking about an eventual move to Australia, with Perth Glory, where his brother Jamie plays, his desired destination.

"I am not sure if it will be after the World Cup or before but I have always said I will come back and play in Australia. I left home at 16 to sign for West Ham and have never really shown people at home what I can do. Although I was born in Brisbane, I was raised in Perth so playing for the Glory would be the ideal scenario, but when you have been living 10,000 miles away from home, what is a 3½ hour flight? I wouldn't say I wouldn't play anywhere else in Australia but Perth would be my preference."

With Robbie Fowler to play for North Queensland, Coyne says interest has hit unprecedented levels. "There is a highlights package that they show on TV in the UK and I have had players coming up to me and asking about the A-League, which would never have happened a few years ago."

Encouraging. Good to know that Folwer is creating so much publicity for our league already.

It's annoying because here we are finding plenty of players who seem the goods yet we have no way of influencing where our club will go for players.
I'm guessing we'll be getting a few more players in holland but more like Sikora then De Groot.
Any idea if were gonna resign Magdic ?
and whats happened to Miceveski he'd certainly be a good pick up for someone in this drained league.
I'd love to see some players more of the 22-28 age range but in saying that i'm happy for Mitchell to continue to sign guys past their peak because where there at now is often still higher then where most of he A-league players are.

hmmm ...

well dave mitchell is going to holland, england and scotland in a scouting trip next month ... i assume he will talk to sterjovski whilst stopping over in england ... lets just hope he can recruit some quality and fill all our visa spots, especially with a big name marquee signing. I really want to know who this former dutch international that david mitchell is targeting, hmmm ....

Edgar Davids??? great player, but he is 36 .....

Patrick Kluivert ... his 32 ... would be a great marquee signing i think

hmmm....

I think Glory should make contact with Helsingborg to discuss the possibility to loan Henke Larsson from the 2nd transfer window to end of season.

Why would this be possible? The swedish season ends early november and Henrik has previously expressed that its important for him to maintain fitness and the best way to do this is to keep playing in the off season. He has previously been loaned out by Helsingborg to Manchester Utd for this purpose. Henrik also have the goal to keep playing for the national team at least over the world cup and this is an arrangement that greatly could benefit all involved parties.

This could be a very cheap solution to get an experienced world class player to the club - also Henke is not only a great player he is also a great person always loved by his team mates and by the supporters.

Another great Swedish players that possibly could be tempted by such loan agreements even though hes not necissarily the right player for Glory:

Marcus Allback - Orgryte IS - striker

Arguably the most effective Swedish striker in modern times with 30 goals in 74 caps - always at the right spot at the right time.

Due to the schedules of A-League and Allsvenskan much mutual benefit could be gained by creating ties between Swedish and Australian clubs.

Hmm interesting proposal zaquex. Both players would be great for our league, despite Larsson's age.

Hmm that Netherlands International is quite the mystery - could well be Davids Glorious - that's what I first though too.

BTW Christian Cyan who's at Wrexham atm, he might be a better, slightly younger and cheaper alternative than Jody Craddock.

Christian Cyan ... havn't heard of him actually ... craddock seems to have more experience and a good record behind him, having played in the premier league.

I would much prefer kluivert over davids though .... considering davids is 36 and kluivert is 32, davids was a great player in his time though. And would only prefer kluivert providing he had a bit of pace at least, dont want a slow bugger ... defintely would be a good finisher though with his wealth of experience and have a good eye for goal.

Sorry it was Gyan, he's some info, I posted previous page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Gyan (30/31yo. May be in Conference atm, but spent 8 seasons with Feyenoord, appearing in nearly 100 games for them. Played a season in Finland's top flight, then signed earlier this year with Wrexham till the end of this season. The guy has been capped 23 times with Ghana's NT. He could be an awesome get for a good price too!)

Kluivert, according to his Wikipedia entry, hasn't played any elite football since the middle of last year, with Lille. He's part of AZ's coaching set up now, apparently (Coaching the strikers, so perhaps Holman! :o :P)

Davids, according to his Wiki, also hasn't played elite football since the middle of last year, with Ajax. In December of last year, Davids played for the Oceania XI All Star team against the LA Galaxy in New Zealand.

He was linked to all sorts of teams and leagues, including our A-League, late last year. He trialled with Tottenham in Jannuary:

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/index.php/sports/15361-redknapp-snares-p1575m-defoe-as-jermain-returns-to-lane-for-tottenham-medical

Davids could replace Amaral? But would Davids accept the kind of wage we offer non-marquees here?

If you brought Davids down under, you'd HAVE to bring him as marquee.

Make it part of his contract that he needs to wear those cool goggles, and people will come from all around to see him. He's a class act.

I reckon a team of european has-beens would rape the A-League.

Hmm just it's getting kind of confusing, as we've been hearing Mitch is endeavouring to get Mile Sterjovski down here as Marquee, as unlikely as that may seem, at the moment. I suppose Davids may be 'Plan B?'

Davids would certainly be good enough, if we only get one-two seasons out of him then that would be great.

As always though, fitness is the major concern - thoguh Davids has a pretty good reputation fitness wise, though perhaps a bit too much at times, as he was banned for that nandrolone or something, earlier this decade! :o

Whoa whoa whoa....

Davids, like most of this topic, like most of FourFourTwo forums, like most of the internet, is pure whimsical speculation on behalf of us plebs. A "wouldn't it be nice if...". There has been 0 indication from Glory that we're even remotely looking at him or anyone like him.

Please don't get your hopes up. You're a Glory fan post-2005; you know those hopes are going to be dashed

THey said were looking at an ex holland international.
Davids is an ex holland international.
therefore we could indeed be looking at him.
hes probably dying to play football again.
He would also have to wear the goggles.
not because there cool but because medically he has no choice when he plays football.
He would make an awesome marquee.
him and Dadi would make great ambassadors for us.

You're a Glory fan post-2005; you know those hopes are going to be dashed

lol I think you took my comments about Davids the wrong way - I'm just trying to deduce who the mysterious 'Netherlands International' player may be and Davids and Kleivert were mentioned as possible, so I just made comment on them.

I don't disagree with the other view either though - We'd be enhancing an 'old aged home' rep in the A-League if we brought another 35+ yo import to our club, especially as Marquee. But if we end up with Kevin Phillips he'd be similar age anyway. And yeah, the afact they haven't been at a club for the past 10 months or so, also a slight concern, fitness wise.

I have my hopes slightly high for Mile Sterjovski though, though I know he's started to settle now and we need Derby to release him from his contract. He could be the Marquee we've need, if we get him.

I really do not know in real terms, who we could possibly get as Marquee who could atleast match the likes of Sikora and Dadi, but if Mitch can manage that then that's good going.

Marquee is a bonus really, as we haven't had one since Laza anyway and he ofcourse wasn't even around much in that later period.

Ofcourse what's more important is who we sign as a second striker, if we can find a suitable CB to lead our defence and perhaps a good attacking midfielder/central midfielder or even wide left player. Three Visa spots free to utilise, too. And we've been discussing that. :P
