April has nearly passed - Todd was announced, but no further player announcement news, yet. Though in regards to a Marquee Glory/Mitchell HAVE been in the past quoted as saying they could wait as long as a few games into the season, to wait on the 'right Marquee.'
I really hope the Recoba interest is true, on a serious level, and not only that, that we sign him ofcourse. Would be massive for the league, aswell as the club.
With Todd, 18 spots filled so far AFAIK, including 2 'Youth' Spots (Neville and Doyle), maybe 3/4 (so 19/20 total) if we've signed Skorich and/or Brent Griffiths, on senior terms. Overseas signings, 3, Dadi, Sikora and Todd - maybe 4, IF we re-sign Amaral.
Jacob Burns has apparently been signed, he being the 'mysterious Socceroo,' so that means we actually have atleast 19 players so far.
Still room for 4 players? (Or 2/3 players with 1/2 more NYL boys) The Marquee (likely a 4th Overseas player, striker or midfielder), 1 more Youth player (If we have not yet elevated another NYL player) and another striker for the squad and/or left sided player for the squad and another central defender? But if we have signed Skorich and our Marquee turns out to be a striker, than that may be enough up front for us? But if the Marquee is not an out and out striker, then we may be after another quality striker, even Sterjovski, if we can fit him under the cap.
Max Squad size = 23 and a minimum of 3 of those being Youth Players(Under 20/Born 1989 or later, for this coming season), a maximum of 5 of those being Overseas players and ofcourse 1 of those 23 could be a Marquee, and if they're a Visa player, they'd take up of those 5 Overseas players spots.
With Burns, seems it won't be till June when we actually hear anything official?

say for example we did sign recoba ... where would u play him.
up front? left wing? left centre mid? or attacking mid?
left wing would rule out as we got sikora there, probably not up front coz he is a creative player and more suited in the midfield, probably as an attacking mid yeh? so either burns or shroj would be on the bench ... recoba attacking mid ... burns/shroj defensive mid

He would be the most technically talented and creative player on your team. At AM he would create all your attacking moves and still be an individual threat. Think Amaral, but much better. Better yet, think of how good SydFc looked when Juninho was in control.

i would play recoba on the wing so you could get the benefit of his crosses but more than encourage him to stroll into the middle whenever he felt necessary. the beauty of recoba is the no talent thugs would hack him down but then you get him taking dangerous free kicks!!

Agreed that his free kicks are epic(to say the least:cool:), but still think that, to get the most out of him, AM is the way to go. Have Shroj at DM, Pellegrino + Sikora out wide and Dadi + ? and you'll threaten Victory for the title.

------------Tando -----Harnwell------Todd Neville----------------Naum ----------Shroj/Burns? Pellegrino Recoba Sikora -------------Dadi
Recoba's struggled with fitness this past season in Greece, so Mitch would probably sub on Shroj/Burns. If we don't sign Burns then you'd be looking for Jukic or maybe Skorich if you were down a few goal or two. In any case these two youngsters need to be given gametime for the future of the club.
With Recoba being a true two-footer and Sikora not bad with his right either, I would be trying to develop those 3 into a fluid midfield. With a lone frontman you need constant movement to keep the centre-backs on their toes.

So now we just need to come up with a catchy phrase to shout when he scores, or is that getting too far ahead of ourselves?

Yeah, Recoba as AM FTW. He may also not have the pace/stamina/fitness these days for the wings. He's also, typically, not noted for his ability to track back AFAIK? And OFCOURSE, his ability would be best utilised in 'thoe hole.' He'd be like Juninho but potentially, even better? :o
And imagine, he'd be in the perfect position to draw fouls for many of his own free kicks. 8) He'd turn so many players, deft touches, one-twos.. he'd be fouled soo much here and often just outside the box too. And being the pro he is, he'll know to how to 'maximise' the chances for foul/free kick calls. That is, until A-League players learn to be a bit more careful.
And we saw glimpses of what can happen when decent South American AMs can interplay with the likes of Dadi, in one of the goals of the season, involving Ruka, in a 3 player passing exchange on the edge of the box. Recoba could link with the big man quite well. Dadi as we can tell, is a cultured player, he's from the 'French School' and can handle the ball well, use the players around him well. He will see those runs and see and make those passes.
He 'could' even play alongside Dadi, given we lack strikers, but with a front two with Recoba behind, that's an embarrassment of riches, especially if the second striker could be someone like Mile - That's Dangerous! :o
And dam Mile has largely been groomed in France and Switzerland too, so what a trio! :o
And with Burns and Srhoj - why not a 5 man midfield, with 3 at the back? Why not?
Also, Srhoj and Burns, these guys can be a little more versatile - Srhoj or Burns 'could' play RB? Either could play RW? Though Neville and Pelle occupy those positions, if either falter in some way, they could easily slot in there, as too Sikora. Sikora is renowned for his versatility - he could play anywhere on the park pretty much. He could be an option for LB, with Recoba ahead even. Sheesh that is like a CL quality left side lol. 3 man
------------Tando ---Harnwell--Todd--Naum Neville----------------Sikora ----------Shroj,Burns Pellegrino---------Recoba -------------Dadi
or
------------Tando ---Harnwell--Todd--Naum Neville----------------Sikora -----Pelleg,Shroj,Burns ---------Dadi--Recoba
Ofcourse we are still quite limited in our options - Recoba is only speculation and even with him, our squad still lacks another decent, experienced striker, for the rotation. We'd still have 1 free Visa spot too
BTW For the left, let's sign Marconi's Ali Abbas?! He could be our 5th Visa guy, and if we make the ACL, our +1, in the 3+1. Dare I say, Sikora at LB and Abbas ahead, as Abbas at LB is apparently a stretch as he's not known for his defensive work. Abbas could even play in the hole, though if we had Recoba prob not, though if Recoba played ahead of Sikora and Abbas was in the middle - but that would be a slap in the face for both Recoba AND Sikora, perhaps?
And dam when I look at our line ups, no offence to him, but Naum certainly seems out of place. I'd like to see Brent Griffiths coming through, this season. Let's hope he does.

I daresay both Recoba and Mile would have to be Marquee signings:) You'd think so, though Mile has played under Mitch before and we DO have other elite A-League players who are perhaps surprisingly considered 'Non-Marquees' wages wise, despite some of those who have been made Marquees - Carlos at Victory, Victor Sikora here at Glory even? It is possible, especially as Glory apparently still have some cap room to actually pay him a decent salary, similar to Sikora's perhaps? Mile has been linked to Adelaide recently and tbh it may be a better move for him as he'd be Marquee for sure and Adelaide United are more needy of decent strikers, than we are! If Glory can even snare just a decent A-League level striker, or find a State League gem (WA or elsewhere), to compliment our high level Marquee and complete the rotation with Dadi and Skorich, then we should be alright - if we have a high level AM Marquee like Recoba to supply them and bang a few in themselves. It's obvious to say, but despite it being the right time for him to move to Europe, it was still quite a blow to lose Ruka' - very hard to replace. I reckon, if we can even just get, say, a guy like Ali Abbas, then if we could find a guy like Phoenix's recent signing, Greenacre, then that is all we really need, minimum. We're lucky that we already have Dadi, so it's not like Adelaide's situation where they have to build from nothing. We just need to find some one who can compliment him, or just strengthen our striking depth/options. If we go for Abbas, then we could go all out for a Marquee Striker, like Sterjovski. If we go Recoba, it might be harder to find a decent squad striker? Hmm Recoba rumours aside/presumed not happening, having Ali Abbas + Sterjovski as Marquee = a good combo for our side, I'd reckon? ------------Tando --------Harnwell--Todd Neville----------------Sikora ---------Shroj,Burns Pellegrino---------Ali Abbas -------Dadi, Mile Sterj Edited by gloryperth: 30/4/2009 06:49:21 PM

Honestly I think we can fit Recoba & Mile in if Sage splashes out for Recoba, then uses most of the extra 500 000 a year that clubs are allowed to pay players for community development appearances on Mile and Dadi they could make it work. Despite Adelaide qualifying for the ACL, I think Perth is a more exciting prospect with the names being tossed up and sageys commitment to get Perth back to the top. Some of the theoretical perth sides Ive seen posted on this thread could not only win the A-League but win the ACL, the only thing is if we win the HAL off Recobas back and then he leaves before we play ACL what good is that???
Ther is a chance Perth will get Recoba asnd Denilson as Sage has stated he wants to utilise the guest and marque spots....
Even If we dont get Recoba or Denilson its obvious that they are chasing someone of real quality wich is really exiting for us in the west

Haha, half of this thread has also been hype  . I don't even know when season tickets are being released yet let alone any confirmed signings.. Hurry up Perth! With both of these things, anyway, back to praying; For Recoba, for Burns, for Holman, for Mile, for Denilson, for season tickets, for mild summer days instead of getting heat stroke in the eastern stands, for yada yada yada. Quote:Coach sees star player Recoba as perfect fit to lead Perth club back to glory Michael Cockerill May 1, 2009 - 1:06AM
PERTH GLORY coach David Mitchell has given Uruguayan superstar Alvaro Recoba the stamp of approval as the player to lead the A-League's biggest underachievers back to the summit of the domestic game.
A week after Recoba's interest surfaced, Mitchell sat down with Glory's ambitious owner Tony Sage yesterday to discuss the prospect of the former international becoming the club's next marquee player, and both have agreed to pursue the opportunity.
Recoba, 33, has spent the past season with mid-table Greek side Panionios, but is out of contract on June 30.
Panionios have offered a new contract, while Greek rivals PAOK Salonika, who hope to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League through the play-offs, are also interested in his signature.
Perth would have to smash their wage structure and fork out $1 million-plus to lure Recoba. But such is his profile after a decade with Italian giants Inter Milan and two memorable World Cup play-offs against Australia, that the Glory could expect to recoup a large part of their investment through a major spike in attendances.
If Recoba were to join Perth, he would arguably trump former England international Robbie Fowler [North Queensland Fury] as the competition's biggest drawcard.
Mitchell was oblivious to the Recoba connection until returning from a scouting trip to Europe two days ago, and Sage made it clear earlier in the week the coach's view would decide whether the deal would be pursued.
Last night Mitchell gave the long-suffering Glory fans the news they wanted to hear. "We'd love to have him here," he said. "He's a striker who floats about, which is exactly what I'm looking for. We want a marquee player next season, and we've made no secret of that.
"But we don't want one just for the sake of it. It has to be someone who adds value to the club, adds value to the league, and hopefully is an exciting player who's going to score you goals.
"He fits the bill perfectly. Players of his quality aren't easy to find, but the good thing now is the A-League's being recognised more and more overseas, and there's a bit of a fantasy about coming to play in Australia.
"Hopefully, that will help us get the deal over the line. So far the club has expressed its interest, so now it's a matter of finding out what his demands are. We know we can't pay him what he might get in Europe, so it's a question of how persuasive you are.
"We're going to get back in touch with his management, and take it from there … He's still a fantastic player, and he'd be a huge drawcard. He'd light up the A-League."
After dominating the last years of the old NSL, Glory have been a disappointment in the A-League, failing to make the finals in each of the past four seasons.
Sage, who late last year assumed total control of the club after buying out his two former partners, has made no secret of his determination to drag Glory back to the top, and is seemingly prepared to spend to achieve his ambitions.
Even if Perth miss out on Recoba, there are at least two other candidates to fill the marquee spot, while Mitchell has returned from Europe having agreed terms with three new recruits - believed to include fringe Socceroos midfielder Jacob Burns and veteran English defender Andy Todd.
Sage, meanwhile, has also agreed to underwrite two high-profile pre-season games in July against English Premier League opponents Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham, both of which should fill the 18,000-seat Members Equity Stadium. From http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/soccer/coach-sees-star-player-recoba-as-perfect-fit-to-lead-perth-club-back-to-glory-20090501-ap2z.htmlSo much hype... So, so much hype. When is the new kit for Glory coming out? They should have a special one with RECOBA printed on the back already  ... But then again, that's what Chelsea did, and now Robinho is at... Somewhere. :-k

Ive seen on the website that Ruka, Robinson, Dino and Petkovic are all gone but does that mean that Tarka, Magdic, Doyle and Mark Lee have all signed for the upcoming season??
I would be pretty disappointed if they have, a part from Doyle who has been killing it in the NYL the other 3 have hardly featured. Tarka undoubtedly has the talent but whenever he comes back from long lay offs he is a little off the pace (which is to be expected) and gets frustrated and gives away stupid penaltys and then doh! Hes injured again.
But geez this is the most exciting offseason Glory have had in years and we havent even officially signed any new players.
