its all day dreaming. i think kanu is just a more polished version of dadi, id like a smaller quick striker to partner him but hey wouldnt complain if we did get him.
note to self stop getting so emotionally attached to the idea of all these superstars playing for us.

Re: Kanu - This was the sort of stuff Tony Sage was talking about - All generated by Agents looking to see what value their player has by releasing rumours... I wouldn't take it seriously at the moment.

Yeah it's tough right now. It's exciting, and hard not to get your hopes up. It does seem likely we will have some kind of Marquee player this season though, which will be great.

Regardless of what happens with all these big names, I think this season is going to be exciting.

Just to catch up on some squad news, apparently this is about a month old, but for those who don't know, Mark Lee was released by the club, in early April, as reported below on the 9.4.2009:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~jacob/wasoccer/archivednews/2009MarApr.htm

Quote:
LEE PLANS FOR LIFE AFTER GLORY

Midfielder Mark Lee is considering his playing options after being released by Perth Glory. Although not surprise that a contract wasn’t forthcoming from the A-League club, Lee says he was disappointed by his lack of game time during the summer of 2008/09. “I’d spoken with (coach) Dave Mitchell at the end of the season and it was pretty clear then that I wasn’t part of his future plans,” said Lee, who featured in only two games last season. “I’ve been involved in the game for a long time and I know how it works. Unfortunately, I was not given any opportunities after the second round so it’s been a very frustrating time for me.”

Although circumstances restricted him to just 10 first team appearances, Lee says he thoroughly enjoyed every minute of his time in the A-League. “I have no regrets - none at all,” said Lee, who signed short-term deals with the club in 2006 and 2007 before landing a full-time contract last season. “I gave everything I had when I was training and playing and enjoyed every moment of been a professional player. I only worried about the things I could control and have no regrets as I know I could not give any more. Being selected in squads, getting another contract and playing in my preferred position was not under my control.”

Lee starred on the local stage, most notably by winning the 2005 Gold Medal while at Bayswater City, before stepping into the national arena in late 2006. “I played my first A-League game when I was 27 and always felt very comfortable playing at that standard. The pitches are fantastic, the atmosphere is great and it’s a nice environment to play in,” he explained. “Making my home debut against Adelaide with my wife and parents in the crowd as a definite highlight, as was playing in front of the children I’ve had the pleasure of coaching here in Perth.”

Playing for Glory Youth last season was an enjoyable experience for Lee, who by day is a youth development officer at Football West. “It was great to play for the Youth team as it was a chance to play. No matter what game I play in I love to play. I have coached some of the boys and it was nice to be able to give some advice to them on the pitch,” he commented. “The quality of players in the Youth program is very good, they all have a good attitudes and will hopefully have very bright futures in the game. As long as they work hard and take any opportunity that comes there way all the players have A-League potential.”

The past few months have been hectic as Lee combined his Glory commitments with those at Football West. “It was an ideal situation as I didn’t feel any pressure or worry about a bad training session as I had another focus as soon as training was over,” he commented. “A typical day started at 7am in the office and then off to training for 9am. After training, when the other lads were going to the golf course or the beach, I was back in the office and then coaching in the afternoons, sometimes getting home as late at 10pm - so the days were long.”

At 29, Lee still has a lot to offer the game as a player and is planning a State League return once recovered a foot injury. “I had an operation which stopped me playing for Glory at the start of this year and have been training by myself for the last three weeks. I feel really fit but have not put the boots on so will have to see how it feels when I do this,” he said. “I want to play for a coach who has a similar philosophy on the game - one that encourages his team to play in the correct way and makes training specific to how the game is played. But most of all I want to enjoy playing the game again.”

Only Bulloch, Magdic and Hayden Doyle are unconfirmed now, AS FAR AS I KNOW. Hayden Doyle has 'apparently,' according to his Wikipedia entry, been recently 'loaned out' to State League side, Mandurah City. So if that is technically a 'loan' then I presume he has re-signed with Glory? I can't find any sources on the net for this move though. Edit: Seems he actually signed a contract with Mandurah City, I see no indication that he's still with Glory.

Edit: Ah found a 'source' on that same website:

Quote:
29.4.2009

SHORT PASSES

...

Mandurah City has added Perth Glory utility Hayden Doyle to their playing roster. Raised in Bunbury, Doyle made four senior appearances for Glory last season and will be a valuable addition in Mandurah's push for silverware. Prior to joining Glory, the now 20-year old served a two-year apprenticeship with English club Stoke City which was followed by a spell with Niki Volou in Greece.

...

What do you guys reckon?

We have 17-18 players signed so far, essentially. 23 is the max. Alot of players have departed the club. It's possible Bulloch may be re-signed, given he's a left sided player, but that may be about it. Elevating young midfielders like Fondyke and Jukic to the senior squads, may see Magdic released, if they haven't already.

Mitchell has been ruthless. :o

the reason i didnt give this story much credit is they say kanu could go to perth for a lucrative deal. i'm pretty sure the agent and those involved are aware how little money is actually on offer here. only bonus on hearing so many names is at least we are in a position to be a little more selective rather than just taking the first person who shows some interest.

Can I just say thanks to the sudden appearance of Perth Glory bloggers and their reporting. Football news is woeful in this state, as you all know, so your efforts are appreciated - although be aware of the boy who cried wolf story in any of you have long-term interests in this career...

Appreciate the appreciation :P I like the use of "sudden appearance" which is 100% true. One day I had an idea for the blog, the next I started it up. Although if the glory weren't out there and active - it would of been 10 times harder.

Some at the press conference said the Carnarvon local member Nick Cantania can get a full house (around 4,000 - 5,000) to the newly developed oval up there.

They played a pre-season match in Mandurah last season and according to Wikipedia they drew a crowd of 4000 too. I remember highlights from the game, including Trinidad drawing the penalty, on TV and the crowd DID look quite healthy, near capacity.

I believe that whole Rockingham-Mandurah corridor - If Perth were to ever have a second A-League franchise, that should be the region to base it. Maybe not now, but in 15-20 years, yes.

There was a bit of a supporter's bus/train trip down to Mandurah, too.

I presume that no matter where the pre-season matches are in WA this year, similar things will occur.

I hope that happens even if they start off in a second division league to build support. They could have Rockingham all the way down to Albany and across to Esperance if they wanted to. Excited times for WA Football. Not to far to drive or catch the train but far enough not to impede on Perth Glory's and their own football markets. Should this happen!

I thought Scott Bulloch had been re-signed, it was announced around the time of Skorich and Griffith's deals?

Would prefer Recoba as he would offer something different to the team than Kanu.

Hmm ok. Just saying though that, that region, Great Southern Perth, could easily support a team in the not too distant future. The Peel region already has near 100k people. Rockingham also near 100k people. Neighbouring LGA's Kwinana and Serpentine-Jarradale also have a combined near 40k people. If the team was based in Rockingham then fans could be drawn from Cockburn and even Armadale too. So combined those regions are near 150k people.

This is only on today's figures. But in 20 years, with the Mandurah line now established, Cockburn-Kwinana, Rockingham, Mandurah/Peel corridor will continue to grow out, growing by a 100k. There will be easily half a million people, all about 30km or further, from Perth's CBD or within 20-25km of Rockingham Town Centre.

This is not even considering the fact that there are alot of British ex-pats down that way. Though ofcourse that is no guarantee of good crowds.

Oh sorry - I checked it up and you are indeed right. We have re-signed Scott Bulloch. So that makes 19 signed so far, including Todd.

And Benjo I'm presuming Magdic has been released too, so I can't find any news articles about it, online.

As I suggested before, Mitchell has been ruthless. Combined with guys who left halfway through last season, through transfers, we have seen up to 13 players leave the club - 8 released or retired and Nikita and Dino aside, that's 11 who we were happy to see depart. From the squad that we had start of last season, only 9 remain! Granted this does not include guys like Srhoj and Sikora who joined mid-last season.

Is this the biggest clearout Glory has had since it's time in the A-League?

Keep Magdic for sure.
and i've heard Bulloch and Doyle are resinged.
but yeah Magdic is pure class and still so young.
it's a real shame he got injured and he'll no doubt find it harder to get a game this year if he wins a contract.
And who will we have for captain ?
i'm thinking Burns has the kind of stuff we need.
any other candidates ?

KANU is ready to bring his decade-long Premier League career to an end by making a lucrative move to Australian side Perth Glory.
Portsmouth FA Cup final hero Kanu, who netted the winner in the 1-0 Wembley victory over Cardiff last May, has not played enough games to trigger a clause earning him a new one-year deal.

The former Arsenal star’s agent Samuel Okoronkwo said: “Kanu wants to play football and would consider Australia."

Nigerian international Kanu, 32, has netted 21 goals in 91 appearances since joining Pompey on a free transfer from West Brom in the summer of 2006 but has started only two Premier League games this season.

Perth had been lining up a move for Birmingham striker Kevin Phillips, who is now likely to remain at St Andrews following their promotion to the top flight.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article2412969.ece

Recoba wont come it is simple as that he hates Aussies.
Sterj focused on WC spot shouldnt come back
Overmars - broken leg ?
Todd will come hopefully not as marquee
Kanu and Dadi upfront would be AMAZING for the a-league
Denilson will come on a guest stint to put more bums on seats...

I agree with earlier sentiments over Kanu - I'd much prefer Recoba over just about anybody really, let alone Kanu. Kanu much like what we already have in Dadi, just better (And younger) ofcourse. But we will still have gaping hole in that creative midfield area.

BUT, that Ali Abbas guy comes to mind again. He is certainly a talent and he won't be expensive either. We still would have 1 free Visa spot and Abbas is a guy who could play behind the strikers or wide left. Abbas was a rising star for the Iraqi NT but turned his back on playing for them, due to the strife in their country (Which he experienced personally, losing family members). He's definitely under rated by the A-League - he could easily be a star in this league.

Infact Abbas should be our back up option, plan B for the AM possie, if we can't get Recoba and do end up going the Marquee as an out and out second striker, be it Kanu or whoever it may be. I'd wish Mitchell would trial Abbas, atleast.

And gee yeah, this conveyor belt of names - beyond crazy.

Get an attacking midfirelder ?
pray do tell where he would be played ?
we have a midfield four of Sikora, Burns, Shroj and Pellegrino.
i'd suggest the next signings will be defenders and attackers.
the dreams of an attacking midfielder are misplaced.

Either get an attacking midfielder and consign Srhoj to the bench or defence,
or play five across the middle,
or get the AM on a guest stint and keep Srhoj benched temporarily.

It can be done... but I would prefer a CB/ST first.

Do you have a quote for that Jim? Or are you basing that on the fact that Uruguay lost to us in the last WC qualifier?

Considering Glory have confirmed that they were contacted by his agent, I doubt that "he hates aussies" will be the reason it falls through.

Hmm I disagree, Kanu is nothing like Dadi without saying that Kanu necissarily would be a great solution for Glory.

I think Dadi is a strong physical player good in the air and not afraid to involve himself in challenges, in many ways he is a older budget version of his more well known compatriot Drogba. Kanu on the other hand, although tall, has very little physical presence, he is not likely to involve himself in physical challenges and he lacks pace and possibly stamina - what he has is great technique and vision, what he contributes is precision passes and on occation spectacular flair - not really sure if its possible to get the best out of him without excellent service, something that is generally in short supply in HAL.

i would much prefer recoba over kanu ...

u can play recoba as a striker or a midfielder .... his creativity and skill level is amazing ... and also ... the benefits of his free kicks can get u extra points and win games.

would much rather see a quick and skillfull player like holman up front with dadi (i wish) and recoba as marquee as AM (i wish also) lol

Umm that is coming from Miron's lips though...

And if he went to the Gold Coast, he would one, not earn much and two, have to really battle for first team with Smetlz and Porter up front, or for a position on the wing, guys like Minniecon and Jefferson.

Atleast if he moved here or to Adelaide, he'd slot straight into our line ups, upfront in a position where both of our clubs are weak and in need of the likes of he. He'd more likely be a Marquee at Adelaide, than here though, I'd think? But he 'could be' our back up Marquee option, if the overseas options fail and the fight for Sterjovski gets intensive with fellow A-League clubs (If it hasn't already).

I agree with earlier sentiments over Kanu - I'd much prefer Recoba over just about anybody really, let alone Kanu. Kanu much like what we already have in Dadi, just better (And younger) ofcourse. But we will still have gaping hole in that creative midfield area. [/i]

Oh sorry with my off hand kind of statement. Yeah indeed they're different types of players - I just meant yeah he being tall and not the smaller, mobile type of striker we might be looking for.

But yeah, indeed, Kanu is class, quite exciting on his day. But as you say, he will need the service and at the moment our search for a Marquee, if it were to be Recoba, then we ironically wouldn't be able to sign Kanu anyway.

But yeah, I suppose Kanu would not be such a bad fit and yeah would be hard to turn down that class of player - who certainly more than fits the bill for a Marquee of the A-League, not just our club.

Dam these Marquee rumours - one pops up and then after a few days another - it's like one pops up due to another perhaps cooling off? For those of us hoping for Recoba it's not a great sign then, given all the Marquee talk was surrounding him, till now. But once again, I know, these are all rumours and this one, much like the others, is fuelled/sourced from agents.

Please be Recoba. [-o<

Yet another slightly rigged poll on the glory website:

How much are you looking forward to seeing Perth Glory in action against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham at Members Equity Stadium?

1) Jumping out of my skin
2) Getting my sleeping bag to line-up for tickets
3) Wouldn’t miss it for the world

Apart from not allowing any negative feedback, I'm not sure I can even tell the difference between these options.
