eyah i'm hoping we can get a player akin to Ali Abbas.
hes in the LB position we need to fill so urgently but he may not be as goood as Mitch wants.

In a perfect world, we would sign Ali Abbas, Chris Coyne and a cheap state league attacking midfielder for our last 3 spots - then I really believe our team could be championship contenders. Right now though, I don't think our defense has enough depth to allow us to cope with any injuries at the back

Isn't Abbas actually a left winger? Why would we want TWO converted leftbacks? Surely we'd be better off signing a 22 year old from one of the state leagues who has played as LB for a couple of seasons.

We could sign Abbas as a squad player to give the option of Sikora playing in the middle, or as injury cover for Sikora particularly if his knee continues to give him trouble.

But let's sign a proper LB first.

I think this is the way we should go, but it's not the way we will go - sounds like Sterj is gonna play up front with one of Dadi and Jelic. I think having the diamond 4 in the mid gives us better structure, and then towards the end of the game, we can push Sterj up into a front 3 if we are losing/drawing, or, alternatively, if we are winning, we can take Dadi/Jelic off, push Sterj up front, and bring Shroj into the mid to play alongside Burns to give us a more solid defensive structure to keep our lead, whilst still keeping a sort of 442 shape

its gonna be tough having jelic or dadi on the bench ... dadi a quality player and fan favourite and jelic coming strate from germany, gonna be a tough choice if mitch decides to do that.

glorywonderland ... sikora is best used as a left winger in my opinion and does that job brilliantly.

How old is he now? I think his still fairly young?

I would be happy offering him another contract also.

im for for madgic, he would really fit the bill of a low cost attacking minded midfielder. if someone were to go down to an injury im sure he would fill in well.

Oh I agree, I was just saying Abbas would give you options our other players don't give. I mean, you'd never bring Bulloch in on the left to put Sikora in the middle. Also, you wouldn't sign Abbas as your first choice LB because he's not a defender.

Magdic is good but from the couple of Floreat games I've seen he can go missing for periods of the game. Still, I think he deserves the opportunity to trial in the preseason and see how he fits into the team dynamic.

'Kind of' Fair point about the converting thing - but fact is, let's not underestimate him, Abbas is no Sekulovski, he's a class act, an international. TBH I'd have little doubt that he's been played at LB/LWB before, be it in Iraq or with the NT. Modern footballers are supposed to be adaptive.

He may be more attacking minded, but he could really work well as LB, in theory - it could be a master stroke. The key is whether he's willing to put in those hard yards and follow the coaches demands. He has the pace and if he has the stamina, then he should have the stamina to improve his workrate, he's a small and agile kind of player too, should he should be an alright tackler. It's not like we're converting a striker here, he's already plays that side of the field and like I said, we don't know - he may well have some experience at LB playing that possie in Iraq or even with the NT, at times.

The thing is, like I said before, he's keen to go to Europe, medium term. But Australia is his port of call for the moment. There's little doubt he has the talent, for bigger leagues than ours. But in order to progress, he will NEED to work on that defensive side of his game. If he becomes a successful LB for us, then not only would he feature for Iraq's NT more, he will surely catch the eye of some European teams, if not atleast teams from Qatar, UAE etc...

He could be a good little investment.

And heck, yeah, why not just have him as part of the rotation? Well, he may start off that way anyway. No one is guaranteed a position, one has to earn their place and we do need some depth out on the left side. And yeah, Sikora is a good LWer, but we could free him up, to play in the middle or out right, free role, too?

And if we do find some state leaguer, then so be it, but lets face it,with Sekulovski, Griffiths and even Bulloch as current squad possibilities out there, we will need a pretty good state leaguer to rise above that bunch, otherwise we'd just be bringing in more of the same.

That's why I mention Abbas, as he could be our Surat Shukha (Victory's LB/LWB) except better. Sure he's not 'KNOWN' as a seasoned LB/LWB, but we can't prove that not only he does not have the experience, that he's not capable. I'm betting he's both.

And just because Naum Sekulovski has taken three-four seasons and still isn't a proper LB, doesn't mean Iraqi International, Abbas, will take that long.

Lol After saying all this, we could always just go for Iraq's current LB - Basim Abbas, who is only playing for an Iraqi club at the moment, is in his mid 20s and has 60 something caps for his country. I saw him play in that recent Confed Cup match against South Africa and he was quite solid out there, did a pretty good job, despite South Africa's incursions through that side, through Sibaya.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bassim_Abbas

If Victory can get their Shukha, then we should too.

Yeah the central midfield is now stacked. Burns, Srhoj, Jukic and Fondyke. Pelle, Sikora and shudder, Jamie Coyne (According to Mitch) can also play there. Sterjovski can play RW, though Mitch has said a few times, he sees Sterj as Nikita's replacement.

People have seen, when we try to predict line ups, that Srhoj may figure on the bench, depending on line ups. Some line ups could see Burns and Srhoj together, but then Pelle might end up on the bench. So that shows our depth in Midfield.

It would be nice to see the West Aussie boy, Magdic, retained but Mitch released him for a reason and with who he's recruited in that part of the field now, we can see why.

But hopefully in the near future, it may be 3rd time lucky for Magdic and maybe some other former West Aussie Glory players, especially the younger ones.

BTW It's a shame that boys like Magic can't get a run exclusively in Glory's NYL team, like how Doyle is, but he kind of had that chance last season, but was out injured so long he could not even do that.
