I watched Foxtel's fox sports FC last night. Interesting how they pointed out that Neville cost us the first goal and almost a second goal as well.

Yes I did, thanks. Good to see I can actually go to the game this week now, lol

i would rather him stay a fair while longer.

Socceroo Sterjovski confident of Glory win at home

PRIZE signing Mile Sterjovski says he does not feel under pressure to score his first goal for Perth Glory in Sunday's home game against Newcastle.

Star-studded Glory is desperate to take all six points from today's clash and Friday night's home fixture against Melbourne Victory, after losing its first two matches.

The stakes are raised because Perth could be gutted for the Round 5 trip to Central Coast on September 4.

The Socceroos play a friendly against South Korea in Seoul the next day, meaning Glory could be without star trio Sterjovski, Jacob Burns and Chris Coyne against the Mariners.

National coach Pim Verbeek will announce his squad for the South Korea match, which is likely to be heavily reliant on domestic talent, on Wednesday.

While Sterjovski would love to open his A-League account in front of home fans against the Jets, Glory's marquee man said the three points was all that mattered.

"Hopefully it starts this weekend, but more importantly I'd rather the team win than myself scoring goals," he said.

"I don't want to be scoring goals if we're not going to be winning games."

Sterjovski almost scored against Wellington last Sunday, but his perfectly timed header was denied by the crossbar.

After being wasted as a striker in the Round 1 loss to Adelaide United, he relished the freedom of a midfield role for much of last Sunday's match against the Phoenix.

"Obviously we're still trying to find what combination works the best so there's nothing set yet," the 30-year-old Socceroo said.

"The first game playing up front I didn't get much of the ball and was left pretty frustrated.

"I think that's why we did change it in the second game, and I got more of the ball and we played pretty well as a team.

"But playing a home game is different and I wouldn't rule myself out of playing up front.

"When I first signed I thought I'd be used wherever I was needed - whether that's on the left side of midfield or the right or up-front."

Sterjovski said Glory deserved to beat the Phoenix last week and tipped a breakout performance against a Newcastle side that has a win and a draw from its first two games.

"We created quite a few chances and we should've easily won the game," he said.

"It takes time for the new players to jell, but over the last few weeks we've seen improvements and a better understanding of each other, so with a bit more time obviously thing are going to get even better and I see us winning quite a few games.

"There's definitely light at the end of the tunnel."

Despite not wearing the captain's armband, Sterjovski is enjoying playing a leadership role at the club.

Neville ready to soar against the Jets
Peter Simcox
Saturday August 22, 2009

After two games of their 2009-10 Hyundai A-League campaign, Perth Glory is still looking for their first point. Back-to-back road trips has been a difficult start for David Mitchell’s side but they will be looking for three points in their first home game at ME Bank Stadium on Sunday against Newcastle Jets.

One player to stand out in the defeats has been 20-year-old defender Scott Neville. It’s been a rapid rise for the former Sorrento player and after impressing in the Glory Youth side, he was elevated to the senior ranks last season.

He is looking forward to Sunday’s home game and he hopes for a win in front of the home supporters.

“We’re all looking forward to the game on Sunday, and we would love to get three points on the board. It was really disappointing for the team not to pick up anything in the game against Wellington but after two away trips everyone is looking forward to getting back to Perth and showing the fans what we are capable of and hopefully we can bring home the points,” said Neville.

At Wellington last week Neville moved to the middle of the back four after an injury to Chris Coyne, and he slotted in really well. The youngster is revelling having the experienced duo of Coyne and Andy Todd at the back with him.

“It has been a great experience for me playing alongside two of the best defenders in the league, and I’m just trying to soak up as much information as possible and just trying to develop my game training with them and playing next to them,” explained Neville.

Coyne heaped praise Neville in the wake of the youngster’s impressive performance against Wellington, which has attracted the attention of rival clubs and overseas, and Coyne can see why.

“Scotty’s got a hell of a future. I know his name’s been touted about this week in the press but he’s got a big future in the game,” said Coyne.

“If he keeps his head down, works hard and listens he’ll be a fantastic talent, because he’s a good player and a nice fellow as well.”

Coyne is a regular Australian representative and captained English clubs Colchester United and Luton Town, while Todd spent a decade in the upper echelons of the English game with the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Derby County, and Coyne is happy to give the youngster advice.

“There are a few grey hairs there,” joked Coyne.

“We’ve been away for a long term time, learnt the game, learnt our trade and hopefully we can pass that on to ‘Nevs’ because he’s a smashing bloke and one hell of a player,” he added.

On Fox Sport FC on Tuesday night it was said Glasgow Rangers were keen on Neville and trial was on the cards at the Scottish giants, but Neville has only one thing on his mind at the moment and that’s Perth Glory.

“I have heard about that rumour and have been getting a bit of stick from some of the boys at training,” said Neville.

“Obviously I would love to play over in Europe but at the moment I’m just trying to concentrate on playing well for Perth Glory and hopefully we can have a successful season as I think we have a great squad which can really mix it with the big teams in the competition,” added Neville.

Another player from the Football West Premier League was given his opportunity for the Glory last week in Wellington and showed he can play at the next level. Former Perth SC midfielder, Todd Howarth, came off the bench to replace Coyne and was excellent down the left and Neville was delighted for him.

“I know Toddy pretty well and he is a great lad and has tonnes of ability as he showed in the game against Wellington. He was not only creating chances from the left but his work rate was terrific as well, hopefully he can continue his good form, and continue his run of nutmegs,” joked Neville.

Glory wary of rampaging Milicevic
Justin Chadwick
August 22, 2009 - 11:49AM .
Perth Glory coach Dave Mitchell has prepared his charges for a midfield assault from Newcastle defender Ljubo Milicevic in Sunday's A-League clash at ME Bank Stadium.

Milicevic has starred for the Jets this season, helping Newcastle to a 3-2 win over Wellington and an invaluable 1-1 draw away to Central Coast.

The former Socceroos defender showed his versatility against the Mariners when he switched to a midfield role after halftime in a move that clawed the Jets back into the match.

Mitchell has carefully analysed that game and said shutting down Milicevic would be a key for the Glory to snatch all three points.

"I think they'll play Ljubo in midfield because he did very well there against the Mariners and I think Nikolai Topor-Stanley will come back (to a central defensive post)," Mitchell said.

"Ljubo's a quality player and I think (Jets coach) Branko Culina is getting the best out of him.

"He's a quality player who can play three or four positions and not put a step wrong."

Glory midfielder Adriano Pellegrino admitted Perth would have their hands full halting Milicevic's storming runs.

"He's a vital player for them and has a physical presence about him," Pellegrino said.

"But we have to worry about our own game before we worry about them.

"They have a lot of dangerous players."

The Glory failed to notch any points from their opening two rounds and Culina was quick to point out Perth's high-profile squad could falter under the increasing pressure to perform.

"The fact that they lost their first two games with the quality squad that they have got, the expectation for them is quite high," Culina said.

"They will be under enormous pressure to do well in this game and that is probably not a bad thing for us because the pressure will be on them and if they can't handle it we will certainly be ready to pounce."

Mitchell admitted he was baffled that some punters wrote off the Jets before the season started.

"They picked up three points in the first game (against Wellington) and then no one gave them a chance against the Mariners and they picked up a point there," he said.

"They're a threat for sure.

"Branko's very much a technical coach, he's got them playing good football."

Football’s Coming Home

A-League football returns to the ME Stadium on Sunday afternoon when Perth Glory host Newcastle Jets. It’s the first chance for the public to see the new Perth Glory in league action and it’s hoped a crowd of around 10,000 will cheer David Mitchell’s side home to the three points.

It’s important the purple army gets behind the boy’s on Sunday and they showed glimpses of what they can do last week in the defeat against the Phoenix, and they were hardly disgraced after dominating the second half and going narrowly close to scoring on several occasions. Coach Dave Mitchell will be keen to maintain the momentum in the club’s first match at the newly re-named ME Bank Stadium, and, on paper, it looks like he’s got the squad to do it.

Defender Chris Coyne has recovered from the stomach virus that forced him from the field in the first half last weekend. Coyne will line up once again alongside fellow veteran Andy Todd at the heart of the defence with Naum Sekulovski and Scott Neville presumably lining up on the left and right respectively.

It’s in the midfield where Mitchell may shake up his options, however, after Victor Sikora was also forced off. Sikora has been included in the squad but faces a race against time to recover from a corked quad, with his position presumably to be taken by Todd Howarth who excelled on the left flank last weekend. Mitchell, though, has also included another left-sided midfielder in Scott Bulloch, who returns from a foot injury. Skipper Jacob Burns and Wayne Srhoj should once again anchor the midfield, but the right midfield position remains something of a mystery.

Last week Adriano Pellegrino was forced to move into right-back following Coyne’s injury, and the coach could do this again, or Mitchell could us him off the bench this time around to accommodate Mile Sterjovski on the right, or the Qantas Socceroos midfielder could once again be played up front alongside Serbian striker Branko Jelic. Fellow strikers Eugene Dadi and injury replacement Matthew Mayora could also be played off the bench, with Mitchell possibly using Mayora’s pace in the same manner as Nikita Rukavytsya’s last year.

The Jets meanwhile, will be looking to maintain their good start, despite suffering a few scares from the F3 derby against Central Coast Mariners last weekend. Newcastle was particularly fortunate not to concede during the first half as the Mariners laid siege to Ben Kennedy’s goal, But having made it through to half-time unscathed, the Jets hit their opponent with a sucker punch as Jin-Hyung Song gave the visitors a 47th minute lead. Unfortunately, Newcastle held the advantage for less than three minutes before an unmarked Nigel Boorgaard nodded home the equaliser which eventually saw the points shared in Gosford.

It’s defending like that, which will have coach Branko Culina concerned this weekend, and if the Glory had scored a second goal last week, the floodgates might have opened against Wellington as the Phoenix defence was torn apart time and again during the second half.

Culina will be trying to counter this and could turn to former Glory defender Ljubo Milicevic. The big man looked the goods when swapped from central defence into the midfield last weekend and it would be a surprise to see him moved from there as former Glory favourite Nikolai Topor-Stanley will ably occupy the centre half role alongside Ang Costanzo.

The Jets have a classy playmaker in Fabio Vignaroli on hand to set up their own forward movements, while Matt Thompson, Sasho Petrovski, Jason Hoffman and Song himself all know where the goals are once the ball’s in the final third.

Whether Newcastle’s forwards have the ability to make it through Perth’s well-organised defence remains to be seen, however, as the Glory have only conceded one goal through general play so far this season.

Ok.
I'll redefine further.
When has an A-league defender gone to a recogniseably better league and gotten game time?
I'm sure Korea is a better league and Griffith will get game time in the Saudi league you'd assume.
but those two leagues are hardly good.
all i'm saying is he should be wary.

Perth happy but not content
Monday, 24 August 2009

Perth Glory players have allowed themselves little time to enjoy a first up win with the focus quickly turning to the visit of Melbourne Victory in a Friday night blockbuster at ME Bank Stadium.

Experienced defender Andy Todd said it’s was a nice feeling to secure three points in front of the club’s home fans but vowed that no one would be taking anything for granted as they prepared for a clash with the reigning Champions.

“We can’t just rest on our laurels now, it is one victory, we want to get that winning taste back in our mouth again on Friday evening,” Todd said.

“I think the result has settled us down a little bit more, especially at home. We’ve got a start now and it’s another quick game coming up on Friday against Melbourne and it’ll be a big challenge.”

Todd has been outstanding in the heart of Glory’s defence and instrumental in helping stem the flow of goals that caused so many problems last season. Perth has conceded just three goals in the opening three rounds with only one of those coming from open play.

“It’s a team game, everyone has a duty to defend and everyone has a duty to attack so it is an all in effort and that is pleasing.”

The former Blackburn Rovers Captain has combined well with Socceroo Chris Coyne and is thoroughly enjoying his football since making the move to Australia this year.

“It has been great so far, off field I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Obviously it was disappointing not to get anything out of the first two matches but yesterday was a good result at home and hopefully it can kick start us now.”

Glory will have just a five day turnaround before they tackle Melbourne although they will be aided by back to back home matches and no injuries from the 2-0 win against the Jets.

“It won’t be a problem. We are doing a recovery session today and I think its good having a quick game coming up again after a victory,” said Todd.

As much as I like Dadi and hope to see him on the field, Mitch sees him train and knows better than we do.

I doubt the disappearance has been because "Mitch hates Dadi" as has been suggested, and I'd hate to see a decision made for the fans that negatively affects the team's performance.

"where'ssss our Dadi goneeee, where's our dadi gone! where'ssss our dadi gone"

lol .... I love dadi ... but the way we are playing, we are playing well, I would want to keep the same line up and not change things but I would definitely have dadi on the bench though

Dadi still a threat for Glory
Tuesday, 25 August 2009
by Paul Barbieri, Sportal

Perth Glory defender Andy Todd is confident striker Eugene Dadi can work his way back into the side over the club's next few matches.

The French-Ivorian hitman was the club's equal top scorer last season with 10 goals but has only played once this campaign in the Glory's opening-round loss to Adelaide.

Since then, Serbian striker Branko Jelic has been selected in the starting squad ahead of Dadi, while the 35-year-old's position on the bench has been taken by youngster Matthew Mayora.

Mayora, a prolific scorer in the New South Wales premier league, has come into the squad as a temporary injury replacement for right-back Jimmy Downey and it appears coach Dave Mitchell is taking advantage of this situation and using him as much as possible before Mayora leaves.

However, Todd feels Dadi has what it takes to work his way back into the side, possibly as early as Friday night's clash with the Melbourne Victory at ME Bank Stadium.

"I don't know what's been said to Eugene (but) he's part of the Perth team that's trying to go in the right direction," said Todd.

"It's up to obviously Eugene to try and get back in the team, but that's (also) up to Mitch to decide what the scene in selection is."

Todd, though, believes all the club's striking options, which includes marquee signing Mile Sterjovski, Jelic, Mayora, Dadi and the pinch-hitting Andrija Jukic can all answer the call if needed.

"It doesn't matter who plays up front, I think they're all good enough," Todd said.

Dadi, though, has endured a difficult period since the end of last season. The fan favourite was loaned out to the Lichtenstein-based FC Vaduz, which was desperately attempting to avoid relegation from Switzerland's top division at the time.

Dadi, though, incurred the wrath of his manager, former Sydney FC coach Pierre Littbarski, right from the start after he was forced to return to Perth early into his time at Vaduz to sort out Australian residency paperwork.

The situation only worsened as an under-pressure Littbarski took out his frustrations against the big striker, banning him from training after Dadi merely stood to do a touchline warm-up during a freezing cold match day.

The ban led to Dadi returning to Australia, the striker at a loss to explain what happened when he spoke during the pre-season.

"I don't know, I don't know," was all Dadi could say. "I'm not crazy."

"What I can tell you today, is just that it was unfortunate for the off season (that I went there), that was for me a wrong destination."

"When I told him one day that I have to come back to Australia for my visa, he couldn't understand why it was so important for myself and for the club (Perth) and for my family."

"And then everything started to be a little bit difficult," he said.

Dadi, though, has a superb record against the Victory, having scored two goals in both the Glory's wins over Melbourne at ME Bank Stadium last season and could be in line to replace Mayora in time to terrorise the Victorian's under-manned defence on Friday night.

I honestly wouldn't be angry seeing Jelic benched or Sterjovski moved to see Dadi back in the starting line up. I still have faith in him to produce the goods, and I think it's a bit unfair the way he can't even make the bench because of Mayora. Sure, Mayora has potential, but Dadi is a reliable strike force, I don't think Mayora can justify having a spot over Dadi just yet.

I wouldnt mind seeing Dadi and Jelic upfront together, Jelic was a bit isolated upfront with sterj very wide. I also think that Dadi could bring Jelic into the game and vice versa.Jelic showed some glimpses that he will be a great player. Our passing has really improved but our balls in the final third were quite ordinary and by the time the lads got the quality ball to him he was fucked and needed to be subed. I think the link play between Dadi and Jelic could be very dangerous as they both can finish and they both like to bring there teammates into the play. Play Sterj on the right, bench Pelle and bring back or Dadi

Depending on who you talk to, Dadi is either:
*Unfit
*Out of form
*100% fine but out of favour with Mitch

He is out of form. His performance during pre season and Adelaide says it all.

If it is fitness then fair enough, but form? It wouldnt take Dadi much to play himself back in form especially at home in front of the shed!!!
