Sage to battle ATO over $95m tax bill

Rania Spooner
May 31, 2012 - 6:56PM

Read later.Tony Sage's Cape Lambert Resources is poised to fight the Australian Tax Office over a disputed $95 million tax bill with negotiations expected to continue "for some time".

Meanwhile, Cape Lambert has further deferred listing its Sierra Leone Marampa iron ore project on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange, citing current uncertainty and the "volatile nature of world capital markets".

Earlier this month the ATO slugged Cape Lambert with a $67M amended assessment plus costs after an audit of the company's 2011 half year results.

The discrepancy involves the sale of the Cape Lambert Iron Ore project in 2008, and the acquisition of the CopperCo Group of assets in June 2009.

The Perth businessman said Cape Lambert intended to keep cooperating with the ATO and he remained optimistic about a resolution, in a late Australian Securities Exchange announcement Thursday afternoon.

Cape Lambert met with the ATO assistant commissioner on Tuesday to discuss the amended assessment, which prompted the company to go into a trading halt on May 18.

Although the issue remains unresolved the company plans to resume trading Friday morning, and the ATO is not expected to attempt to recover the money for the time being, according to Cape Lambert.

"If the issues cannot be resolved in further discussions, Cape Lambert will vigorouslydefend its position, which will include lodging an objection in relation to the Amended Assessment," the company's announcement stated.

Cape Lambert would also continue to field interest received from third parties over the potential asset level sale of Marampa.

Marampa is expected to cost an initial estimated $458 million to develop.

Cape Lambert last traded at 44.5 cents.

Probably did a deal with Subi that we had to have a certain number of games there. Maybe there's a concert at NIB. not too sure.

Aussie club to face Premier League teams

Posted: 2012-07-13 10:15

Perth Glory FC, a club that plays in the Australian topflight League, will travel to South Africa later this month as for a pre-season training camp that will see them lock horns against AmaZulu, Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits in friendly matches.

According to a travel schedule on the club's official website, Perth Glory will play AmaZulu on July 24 before taking on Platinum Stars three days later.

A match against Bidvest Wits – scheduled for August 1 – will complete the team's training camp in South Africa.

Perth Glory head coach Ian Ferguson looks forward to the visit: "It's a long pre-season so we need to gradually build-up to the start of the Hyundai A-League season in October."

Platinum Stars general manager Jaison Raine tells KickOff.com that the match against the Australian team will be a major highlight of Dikwena's pre-season training.

"We will play against Perth Glory in Nelspruit, where we will be doing our pre-season," says Raine.

"This will be a good chance for us to test ourselves against a competitive team and I am sure that other local teams will also be hoping to see how they fare against Australian opposition," he adds.

The match will also give Dikwena coach Cavin Johnson a chance to measure the performance of his charges, particularly some of the new players who have joined the Rustenburg-based side.

"We firmly believe that if given the time and support, Cavin has the ability to take this team forward.

"After taking over last season, he [Johnson] achieved 20 points from 10 matches so he has already shown his capabilities," says Raine.

Perth Glory commenced their preparations for the 2012/2013 Hyundai A-League season in ideal fashion last with a convincing 6-0 victory over the State Amateur Team at 6PR Stadium in Inglewood.

In the teams’ first and only warm-up game before its pre-season trip to South Africa, Ian Ferguson and his coaching staff made full use of the fixture and their unlimited substitutions, as they handed debuts to new signings Michael Thwaite, Scott Jamieson, Adrian Zahra and the returning Nick Ward.

Zahra, the victim of Kevin Muscat’s infamous tackle during the 2010/2011 season, was particularly impressive in his first start for the club, netting a goal just before the hour, whilst Young Socceroos Jesse Makarounas and Brandon O’Neill also impressed as second half substitutes.

The game started in perfect fashion for the Glory, with NTC product Bobo Sambind opening the scoring in the first minute after rounding goalkeeper Haig Kingston for the simplest of finishes, yet the Glory did not have it all their own way in the first half, with John McGlynn’s side holding firm against their more fancied opponents.

Glory captain Jacob Burns came close to doubling the lead in the 12th minute, only to see his curling effort strike the side-netting, whist Liam Miller struck the post with a sharp shot from 12-yards as the Glory failed to take advantage of their superior first-half possession.

With 39 minutes gone, Josh Risdon came within inches of doubling the lead as he narrowly placed his chip effort wide, whilst Jamieson was denied a debut goal by a goal-line clearance from Benjamin Berard on the stroke of half time.

After the break, Ferguson rang in the changes(11 in total), with Zahra, Makarounas, Ward and Travis Dodd all entering the game, and it did not take long for the substitutes to make an impact, with Makarounas finishing into an open net after Kingston parried a Dodd volley into the path of the winger.

A glorious ball from the left by Moses Kalu then provided Zahra with the simplest of headers in the 57th minute to give the Glory a three-goal advantage, whilst Makarounas doubled his tally four minutes later with a neat finish at the near post after a telling low cross by Storm Roux.

Dodd then finalized the scoring for the Glory with a simple finish after having rounded Kingston in similar fashion to Sambind, before Ward came within millimeters of rounding out a perfect return to the club he left in 2006 as he cannoned a 25-yard free-kick into the bar.

So with Mehmet, Van Den Brink, Miller and Mcgarry do are we going to sign a fifth foreign player? If so We'd have to go for an Asian player wouldn't we, otherwise one would miss out on the ACL. Cause of course Smeltz has an Aussie passport. Or do you think we'll keep one spot open in case?

I am pretty sure that we have two spots left on the roster. Perth have stated that they have little money left, I wouldn't mind leaving the foreign spot open in case of injury to the likes of Burns or Thwaite. Maybe even leaving it to add a spark to our season in the January transfer window like 09/10 with McGarry.

I wouldn't mind filling the last two spots with two of Caniglia, Woodcock or Clisby. Someone on the cheap that could be a surprise packet, hell it's not like state league signings would get much game time anyway.

IMO, Sarkies would be a great pick up. Orrrr push Smeltz to Aussie marquee and bring in Culina on the cheap. Both can play anywhere in midfield! Garcia rumours are back after PG posted another picture of him on facebook.

We still have both marquee spots available don't we?

I see, I was counting Mitchinson but he hasn't signed for the firsts has he. The squad can be seen here-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_Perth_Glory_season#First_team_squad
Yeah with two spots I'm guessing we'll go someone biggish and maybe someone smaller after that.

I remember they were saying we have no money for Garcia, but it would be great to get him, if we can't we probably would struggle to sign a good asian player for the 4+1 rule anyway so yeah kids would be the go.

Garcia would be good, but for me the one glaring hole in the roster is a genuine starting quality left winger. From memory Garcia is more of a right sided player.
