Ryan Edwards is a lovely little signing, especially seeing as he's on a loan deal. Someone I wished we'd loaned earlier to be honest - be keen to see whether he fits in as a first-choice player or if like Cam he's more likely to be on the fringe. Man we've got some young attacking talent now!

Indeed, who needs a striker when you have a million forwards!

Guess this means no Garcia, he wont fit into the side by numbers or position now.

Pretty sure we have one spot left plus Dodd IR. Really needs to be a defender.

Left Wing according to VoiceofReason, Right Wing/CM according to transfermarkt. I think he came on as a sub on the right too during the u/20 WC.

Either way there's now numerous cover for LW/AM/RW/CM for the upcoming season. Even at striker, I don't think we will play more than one, with Harold/Maclaren/Makeche backing up Smeltz

ryan williams came on during the u/20 world cup. ryan edwards stayed on the bench.

This is what footballwa.net said of the brothers when they left for Reading:

"Cameron Edwards, 19, is undoubtedly one of the most elegant young players with great vision and Hoddle-like distribution and the 18-month deal he has been offered will no doubt benefit him and Australian football. Full time training will allow Cameron to develop the physical side of his game, if he can do that and learn how to dictate play throughout he could climb to great heights.

17-year old Ryan Edwards, who spent last year at the Australian Institute of Sport, is believed to have been offered a three-year deal, dependent on his release from the AIS. Ryan played for Perth Glory Youth in 2009/10 before moving to the AIS and attended trials with Adelaide United last season. He is a very different player to Cameron with explosive pace and an ability to excite. Both boys are bound to progress their careers quicker with a full time professional environment in Europe than they would have here, and we wish the both all the best."

Does anyone know officially how our squad-size is made up for the coming season?

If I'm correct, we're allowed a 23-man squad... which to me would currently be:
Vukovic
Pantelidis
Burns
Smeltz
Zahra
Nagai
McGarry
Harold
Risdon
Jamieson
Thwaite
Cernak
Sidnei
Dodd -> ??? (injury replacement available I'd presume)

TOTAL 14

Then of these, some are presumably youth and some senior:

Edwards
Edwards
Maclaren
Duncan
Woodcock
Davies
O'Neill
Makeche
Da Silva
Clisby

Can anyone confirm which of these players are on youth and senior contracts?

Also, I'd still be interested to know if 'Visa' players can be signed onto youth contracts. If they could, having not used Visa spots on senior players would offer a great chance to take some talented young SE Asian players for the NYL team. But not sure about the rules on this?

So, only 2 more signings.

Has to either be Garcia (although with the latest signings it's getting difficult to find a place for him) or a CB, plus a pro NYL contract.

Great so 3 more signings...

1) Garcia
2) CB
3) NYL centre-forward?

Is there the scope for the NYL pro to be a) one of the current squad members, or b) also a Visa player?

....and I thought Glory were still way short of their required squad size (something like 18+1 not the 21+2 they are at, assuming the LTIR for Dodd)

Can't be as IR because surely the club would say it. I think Sidnei will be used more on the left anyway.

The only way we get Garcia now is as an IR for Dodd (contract <1 season), or instead of getting another CB which imbalances the teams.

As for the extra NYL slot, I don't think we used any of these last year, certainly don't tihnk all teams go into the year with these slot full. So we'll see.

I think Glory will make one more signing, a defender and might get someone in as IR for Dodd during the year if the cover we have atm isn't sufficient.

So at a guess, at the moment we'd look something like this?

Vukovic
Risdon --- Pants --- Thwaite --- Jamieson
Burns --- McGarry
Sidnei ------ De Silva ------ Nagai
Smeltz

Subs:
Duncan
Clisby
Zahra
Maclaren

??

Or somesuch.

Yeah except swap Sidnei and Nagai as Sidnei is a left sided player but Nagai can play right, IIRC

Interesting guys - he may NOT be a direct 'Injury Replacement Player' but no doubt he practically fills the possie where a fit Dodd may've otherwise filled and hence, less need for an extra VISA spot to be utilised? Aka Dodd isn't here, so we're needing VISA quality to fill the void. No doubt.

Though given how the squad is shaping up, balance wise, one wonders if Edwards may even see the need to utilise an IR - but surely he will and indeed that could play out as you suggest Andy Todd's Elbow.

With NYL slot, IF you mean 'The 3 designated players Under 20', Glory already fulfilled that quota with O'Neill, De Silva and probably Jamie McLaren, who's 1993 born and clearly a senior squad signing.

CB/Defence is STILL a concern indeed - A few midfield/attacking half signings recent times, but all quiet on the defensive front?

Like Garcia, could be long negotiations?

And with cap space, doing a quick TF sum up,

OUT:
Bas Van Den Brink (VISA) - Would've demanded strong wage and void still to be filled
Heffernan - Premium A-League talent back in the day, at prime age!
Liam Miller (VISA) - Refused reduced wage offer!
Nick Ward - Would equal a lil more than the average in this squad too, one presumes?
Matias Cordoba (VISA) - another expense dropped - Scoila = like-for-like wage?
and a couple other smaller earners.

Didn't even include the surely costly Mehmet in the list, as I presume the later arriving Cordoba off-set somewhat, including VISA slot wise.

IN:
Bunch of young players and the, surely, 'relatively cheap' loanee, Nagai re-signed.

Glory SURELY have the cap space, ESPECIALLY if, as I suspect, Edwards does NOT utilise his full 5 VISA slots. He may only utilise one more on a CB to replace BVDB and that's it.

Hopefully Garcia IS signed and that's the front half quality, front half cover, covered. Garcia = VISA quality & experience, with bonus of leadership, too.

Why do we have to go round and round on this.

Teams are allowed 3 NYL players on pro contracts. Glory currently has 2/3 filled. Woodcock and Davies.

It has nothing to do with the 3 u21 quota in the main squad.

Garcia would have to accept a contract that's for less than a season to be IR for Dodd. I can't see him doing that.

I think there are plenty of Aussie CBs that have been mentioned in this thread.

Sorry I mis-understood you before, my bad. Just on wider forums, not here, so many aren't even aware of that Under 20 quota I think, so I tend to bring it up now and again. Again, my bad.

Oh yeah, Garcia won't be an IR player, that's for sure.

The Garcia scenario doesn't make sense - We clearly should have more room in the cap? The value of the OUTs at Glory are far more disproportional to the INs. And Glory have two VISA spots free, which equals alot more free cap space. McGarry may've/probably taken a cut too, for his contract extension.

So while the squad may be near full player number wise, I think 'Salary Cap space' wise, surely there's room to offer Garcia a bit more - unless he's just asking for something well beyond. I personally, through the 'returning West Aussie lense' but also just on pure Aussie CB quality, hope Madaschi can be recruited. But failing that, surely a VISA spot will be utilised on a CB.

Again, Van Den Brink, Mehmet/Cordoba, Miller, Heffernan and Ward - all gone - and their replacements, Sciola aside, are signings the likes of McLaren, Edwards brothers, Cernak and squad promotees from within like Clisby?

There HAS to be some degree of cap room/flexibility?

Unfortunately I just don't think that can happen. Jamieson and Risdon really are wingbacks, and then strength in their game is getting forward and having the speed to track back and put in last ditch tackles playing those two in a back three would get us slaughter unfortunately.

agreed, might as well just put Pants or Clisby next to Thwaite. At least they'll be a little more serviceable than a training cone.

Can't see any chance of Glory playing 3 at the back this season... we have so many high attacking wingers and so few genuine CBs it just wouldn't make sense.

MAYBE if it were something like Vukovic; O'Neill--Thwaite--Pantelidis; Risdon--Burns--McGarry--Jamieson; Harold--Smeltz--Nagai but I really don't think that either suits Edwards's philosophies or the squad he's built.

I'd be really surprised if Sidnei or more likely Ryan Edwards on a year-long loan deal wasn't signed as an injury replacement for Dodd, even if it wasn't announced as such. I vaguely remember Glory not originally announcing another signing in the last 2 years as an injury replacement, and it only coming out when someone realised they had too many players in the squad.

Assuming then that Edwards is the injury replacement, then we can still have Garcia and a CB *and* an extra pro-deal NYL player... I'd love to have thought Cam Edwards or Maclaren would've been put in that spot or alternatively that it would be allowed to be used on a young South East Asian VISA player. More likely we won't use it though.

But I still suspect Garcia coming is highly likely, and that that is holding up a CB signing. Or Ali is happy with Thwaite/Pantelidis/O'Neill and we won't get a CB, which would be rubbish!

I'd happily take Spiranovic, Madaschi, Kisnorbo or Bosnar but would be tempted to see an experienced foreigner (along the lines of van den Brink) get the gig since we almost certainly have the cap room and the Visa spots to fill.
