I'm yet to see Sidnei play, but if Nagai isn't working well on the right, then I think we should move him back to the left where he took the league by storm at the end of last season. He, Jamieson and Miller were amazing together, using combinations that looked absolutely first class and worked to great effect in drawing players before releasing Nagai.

MY preferred lineup?
I'll go with what I think Alistair's preferred lineup is:
....................Vuko................ Risdon....Thwaite....Ljubo....Jammo ...........Burns..McGarry............ Sidnei......R. Edwards.........Nagai ..............McLaren................
Bench: Duncan De Silva Pantelids Harold
EDIT: frankly I don't think it matters where you put those 2 wingers as they seem to swap a lot...

I feel, regarding current fit players: (and in brackets: overall if all were fit) Vukovic Risdon - Ljubo - Thwaite - Jamieson Burns - McGarry Nagai - R. Edwards - Sidnei Maclaren (Smeltz) Bench: Spence (Duncan) Pantelidis O'Neill De Silva Zahra (Harold/Makeche (Maclaren shifted here once Smeltz fit)) With Smeltz the only medium-term injury I'd expect the starting lineup to be as above and the bench to cycle through the fringe players (Pantaledis/Clisby/Evans, O'Neill/C.Edwards, Cernak/De Silva, Zahra/Harold/Makeche) If De Silva were a little more experienced and complete as a player, slotting him into the starting XI with Smeltz up front is actually a pretty imposing side.

Surprised that Ryan Edwards has featured in a few line ups.
How's he been in pre-season?

Reasonable.
But his presence probably speaks to the fact that we're one class central midfielder short at the moment... Still, opportunity for a young bloke!

Well Maclaren looks like being the striker in Smeltz' absence so that means he can't play on the wing and we have Nagai/Sciola there, so really it's only REd and De Silva competing for the number 10 slot and we know DDS wont start so....
Although I'm sure that subs/injuries will mean we will get quite a few others rotated through that position.

Which is interesting, because I swear someone served a suspension from the end of the prior season in the pre-season once? Might be a false memory though.

Glory seem to think the booking counts... Quote:Glory fans in the northern suburbs will have an opportunity to watch their team on their doorstep this Wednesday afternoon when Alistair Edwards' men take on a Northern All Stars select team at the ECU Sports Complex in Joondalup.
Drawn from local State League and amateur clubs, the All Stars will be guided by ECU Joondalup coach Dale McCulloch and his opposite number Edwards sees this latest friendly as another key part of Glory's pre-season preparations.
"We've taken the game to the central and southern regions with our trips to Cockburn, Kwinana, Gosnells and Mandurah," he said, "and now we're taking it to the northern suburbs.
"We've got a couple of games in that area which will finalise our games in the community just before we head into the season proper.
"It's another good opportunity for us following on from last week's games against Heart in which most of the guys got 90 minutes either at Inglewood or down in Mandurah.
"Now we can get some more valuable game time into our squad on Wednesday afternoon."
Last Saturday's second clash with Heart in Mandurah was unfortunately played out in atrocious weather conditions and Edwards is hoping that the trip to Joondalup will provide his players with more of an opportunity to play their normal game.
"The first game against Heart was ok," he said, "because we were able to play football the way we want to play, but the monsoon conditions in the second game made it pretty impossible for both teams to play properly.
"That said, we showed tremendous character in the way we played and it was a great compliment to us that Heart juts tried to do anything they could to stop us playing.
"It was a very testing afternoon all round, but we played with ten men in the second-half and equalised with ten men and that provided a clear indication of the character within the group.
"Hopefully the weather will be a lot kinder to us on Wednesday and we can get back to playing the style of football that we want to play."
Edwards went on to confirm that Chris Harold and Jack Clisby are likely to see some game time against the All Stars having shaken off respective ankle and foot injuries, but Glory expects to lose Steve Pantelidis to suspension after the defender's controversial dismissal in Mandurah.
Admission to the game will be by gold coin donation with the proceeds to be split between Telethon and ECU Joondalup's Under-12s who are raising funds for a trip to participate in the upcoming Volkswagen Junior Masters Tournament in Sydney.

Of course the FFA, A-League websites are useless. A-League specific rules is a three page summary that basically says nothing.

f1dave wrote:Which is interesting, because I swear someone served a suspension from the end of the prior season in the pre-season once? Might be a false memory though. This was from 12 months ago, which was why I raised the query. THE four players involved in a brawl during a pre-season A-League match between Newcastle and Wellington have received bans ranging from two to four weeks. Jets' player Tiago Calvano, whose tackle on Phoenix defender Manny Muscat in last Saturday's match sparked the brawl, has been slapped with a four-game ban for the tackle and the subsequent fight. The ban means Calvano will miss the remainder of the Jets' pre-season games, but will be available for round one of the A-League season when the Jets take on Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium on October 7. from http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/This may be different though as I think it was part of the FFA'S official pre season competition they had run for a few years, and was just assuming matches organised by A League clubs between themselves or with State teams, etc just counted for diddly squat.

So, seems we beat an ECU Joondalup plus ring ins side 3-1. We were 2-0 up after 8 min, 2-1 down after O'Neil conceded a penalty and then scored again. So, after our initial burst, only 1-1 for the rest of the match and no goals second half. Played close to the same side from last week, with O'Neil coming in for suspended Panta, C Edwards having a run (McGarry on bench) and Zahra coming in for Nagai (Harold on the bench coming back from injury). Anyone go along to brave the wind and showers, who can let us know more? Anyone know why Ljubo has missed the last 2 games? Edit: Ok, so now there's a report on the Glory website... Quote:Best of the North 3–1 Perth Glory (Half-time 3-1) ECU Sports Complex, Joondalup Wednesday 18th September 2013 Referee: Adam Fielding
Jamie Maclaren continued his impressive pre-season form on Wednesday afternoon, bagging a brace of well-taken goals as Glory saw off the challenge of a spirited Best of the North side at the ECU Joondalup Sports Complex.
The former Blackburn Rovers man added to his strikes against both Stirling and Melbourne Heart during another lively display up front, while Glory's third came courtesy of a 20-metre collectors' item from skipper Jacob Burns. And with the start of the A-League season now less than a month away, Head Coach Alistair Edwards was delighted with a solid hit-out against a host team that acquitted itself extremely well given its limited preparation time.
"We wanted good games against local clubs as preparation for the A-League season," he said, "and we certainly got that again today. "It was a very good game played in the right spirit and it was very positive for us that we got another intense game of that quality. "We had a little discussion about sticking to our team tasks at half-time, made some adjustments and then got back down to business in the second-half."
Glory came flying out of the blocks in what was their first pre-season visit to the northern suburbs, establishing a two-goal lead within eight minutes as Burns rifled home from just outside the box and from the re-start, Maclaren found the net with a speculative long-ranger. With Sidnei and Adrian Zahra causing havoc down the flanks, things looked ominous for the Best of the North side at that stage, but to their credit, they dug in and grabbed a lifeline on 16 minutes. The lively Joe Knowles wriggled his way into the box only to be brought down by Brandon O'Neill as he prepared to pull the trigger and Jon Stynes calmly sent Glory 'keeper Nick Feely the wrong way from the resulting spot-kick. That goal clearly lifted the home side who managed to keep their A-League counterparts at bay until three minute before the break when they were undone by the best move of the opening period. A slide-rule pass from Ryan Edwards sent Zahra in on goal and rather than take on the shot, the in-form midfielder unselfishly squared the ball to present Maclaren with the simplest of chances from close range.
Half-time Perth Glory 3-1 Best of the North
Glory continued to threaten immediately after the interval, with Ryan Edwards twice going close after being teed up by Sidnei and substitute Danny De Silva who had proved too elusive for the Best of the North defence out wide. The home side, meanwhile, rarely threatened and substitute goalkeeper Devon Spence was only called into meaningful action on one occasions, comfortably keeping out a low drive from Floreat's Aryn Williams. Normal service was then swiftly restored at the other end as Michael Thwaite almost snatched a rare goal with a glancing header that forced a fingertip save from the home 'keeper and substitute Chris Harold just failed to convert another decent chance close to the final whistle.
"We got another full 90 minutes into a number of our players today," added Edwards, "and looking forward, we've got a game next Wednesday against the State Amateur team and then we head over east to play Sydney FC after that. "It's clear that we've got a very good squad, everyone has been playing really well and we've got a lot to think about in terms of selecting our starting eleven for the first game of the season against Adelaide."

In two minds when I read I've missed a Jacob Burns goal. Great for confidence and belief when you can score from distance, but missing it may mean having to wait another year or two to see it again. And worser still, may prompt him back to the top of the list for our free kick takers, uuuurrrrgggghhh.
Has Glory settled on a player to be our 'most likely' free kick taker in these pre season games? I'd been hoping Clisby may be the one to step up.
