We still have: Woodcock O'neill Clisby
There is also Ryan Lowry who I haven't seen play. There is also another guy Mark Bartram?? I think who can play defense but is more of a midfielder and doesn't get much game time with senior players dropping down.
Just because a player has had 0 first team football/0 youth football doesn't mean that there going to be necessarily crap.
I understand its not ideal but I would prefer that over going for someone like Carney.

Right, Ryan Lowry. No, I would not want him to be a backup player for Glory at the moment.
O'Neill is a midfielder who's only turned into a centreback this year. Him having to cover another position? No. Clisby is a centreback who CAN cover LB. No, especially when we need him to cover CB, you don't rely on a if because if there's one more backline injury we can't cover.
I never said anything about a player with no senior experience shouldn't be given a chance, notice HOW I'VE MENTIONED RILEY WOODCOCK SHOULD BE STARTING.
tl;dr As backup LB: David Carney >>>>>>> Ryan Lowry/Mark Batram.

Look at the situation we are in right now. Why sign someone as a quick fix when there is other opportunities awaiting. This can set us up if we are stretched like this again in the future which is a definite possibility.
we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one it seems.

Agreed that on occasions Ryo does go to ground too easily.
But his foot got touched, lost his footing, and went to ground. No-one did anything deliberately, and Ryo wasn't appealing for anything, all just down to the Ref blowing his whistle when he shouldn't have.
Then on the other hand, Broich is one of the worst divers I have ever seen in the A League, and most unusual for an infringement ever to be awarded against him. He should be the last player ever to hold his hands up in disbelief.
Of more concern is the Smeltz situation, and whether he will ever get back to providing anything for Glory. Seems like we're stuck with this age - interrupted preparation - niggling injuries, and so on. Almost a situation of must play 90 minutes for the Yoof just so we can see that he can cope getting through a game again, because every time he's named it seems 50/50 whether he can last any time at all.
And today's Worst saying Gallas has a bit of a sore calf and would be monitored for Friday's match. Those 'missing 3 weeks' went quicker than I thought.

We were truly awful last week. Maybe Burns contributes more in defense than I gave him credit for. Still is well and truly as useful as a wet sock when we have the ball though.
Redwards had his worst game so far. We were meant to have an extra player in midfield, but didn't seem to help any. Not sure if it was 100% Redwards but he was completely ineffective. Should have had an easier time closing down with our extra midfielder.

One team is both young and rapidly approaching "jury-rigged" status with the number of replacements we've had to make (3 forced outs all of first XI players from last week alone), versus one of the most polished teams in the league. We weren't going to come away with points from that, and I'd say we did well to limit the GD damage.

Panta gone... Madaschi is a free agent, but we don't really have a spot for him.

Playing a fundamentally different formation with a heavily modified playing group is going to make players, especially the players who are supposed to be orchestrating it, look bad.

Eastern Glory wrote:Panta gone... Madaschi is a free agent, but we don't really have a spot for him. Glory's Pantelidis off to Malaysia 3 December 2013-SBS Perth Glory defender Steve Pantelidis is set to join Malaysian Super League side Selangor FC. Pantelidis will leave for Kuala Lumpur later this week with Glory coach Alistair Edwards full of praise for the former Melbourne Victory man. "Steve has been a great servant to Perth Glory over the past two years," Edwards said. "We were in talks to extend his contract further, however we had also received significant interest from a number of clubs in Asia for him. "There is increasing money going into football in Asia and the Malaysian League is fast attracting a number of overseas players. "As a club we do not want to stand in the way of player seeking to pursue overseas aspirations, and as such we'd like to thank Steve for his commitment and professionalism at Perth Glory. We wish him well in his future endeavours." Pantelidis, who also played for the now-defunct Gold Coast United in the A-League, will be coached by former Melbourne Victory boss Mehmet Durakovic at Selangor FC.

But if they maintain that during a year where we are actually challenging for the title... Would not be happy.

De Silva played the last youth match (1 Dec), so he may push for a role off the bench. De Silva Inspires Glory Goal SpreeThere was also talk about Gallas being back this week, but I am not sure as earlier it was reported he's out for 3 weeks. And now Smeltz seems to indicate he will be back earlier too... tho I suppose not for the next game.

Defender because we lack those and ours have been injury riddled all season and at front we can play 4 players (incl Smeltz) for one role plus a winger like Sidnei or Nagai if desperate.
That said Madaschi is a CB but where we really need cover is LB. If we had LB cover then Clisby + BON would cover Gallas + Thwaite if they're injured and we'd have Evans if things got really dire.

Thwaite could cover at left back if we signed Madaschi. He was poor cover for the Socceroos at LB but would be more than good enough for the A-League. Especially with Gallas and Madaschi in the middle next to him. Sidnei also clearly follows instructions as he drops back a lot depending on the game and formation.

I think he's talking about what you said about our cover for CB (Clisby + O'Neil for Gallas). We have cover for CB so we don't really have a spot for Madaschi. Though I think we need another CB we probably need a LB more. Hard to pick. Have holes everywhere. Might be worth getting another CB to cover Thwaite (+ Gallas).

Clisby can and has played LB, iirc? He's a left sided player too, again, iirc?
Would be nice to see Madaschi come home, been calling for it for a while. TBRH I'd rather him that Gallas, as silly as that may sound. Though not that silly - I'm starting to suspect Gallas may not be quite the bang for his buck - not that many of us suggested too much otherwise, though some of the media...
In regards to 'cap room' for Madaschi - there COULD be? Depends how much he demands too? Glory had MANY veterans depart the club in the off-season and while Panta was surely on the cheaper end of the Vets pay scale, it may be that Glory's cap 'collectively' may have enough space to sign up a defender of Madaschi's value? Ljubo left too and his 'replacement', Gallas equals outside the cap too? :-k
Heck the CB rotation would be Wanderers-like for competition for places, BUT, unlike the Wanderers, we clearly suffer from on-going injuries and absences, so they'd all get fair game time, due to that alone!
And Gallas and his ability, I'm not sure/Can't remember what Ali Edwards alluded - IIRC He said he would still determine how to 'best utilise' Gallas? Because Gallas and his talent - Could he slot into DM even? His ability on the ball, composure, tactical nous, experience, reading of the game etc... could it work? Especially in Burns' absence?
But that ofcourse depends how we set up (So a Thwaite + Madaschi CB pair?) and who's available, and at the moment, he's one of those unavailable! Grr
I guess, as libertarian suggested, Thwaite COULD be utilised at LB too, but that would be Holger-era level of tactical awkwardness. But then again this IS A-League level, where Thwaite is still a bit of a beast, where-ever he plays (Defensive Midfield too) and still a bit far from International level, where he was caught out a bit, but far from the only one, Holger-era!

If only there were youtube videos of Broich diving... That's the thing mate. There isn't any youtube videos coz he has never dived. He exaggerates fouls to ensure the referees do not miss them and does it the best in the league. It's no coincidence he along with Del Piero is the most skilled in the league when it comes to holding the ball. Henrique once dived and earnt a free kick for us. It was disgraceful. He was obviously quickly put in his place by the coach and has never been seen by a Brisbane player again. I would be filthy at one of our players if they cheated.

Your team may not be far off the mark, and would be starting with a pretty young defence. But not fussed, and will be a big test to see how they cope against the likes of Ifill, Brockie and Huysegems. Will be expecting DDS to feature at some point after the wraps from that last Yoof game. And any showery weather expected to clear by midday, and pretty much the same forecast as today - still 30 degrees at 6 o'clock - so a good evening coming up.

Whether it was going to be a win, loss or draw, it was simply great and entertaining to see so many young guys giving it their all for Glory last night.
(Have no idea when my fixture list got our next home game changed from a Saturday night to a Sunday 4.00pm game).
