Agree that your fears are well founded given our current owners/coaches. BUT -

The biggest priority for next season is a class central midfielder to link up with Nebo and Griffiths. Get that right, and get a coach with a game plan/structure that doesn't involve by-passing midfield and we'll have a chance.

That's only one player though. Still need 8 more in to get a full squad. If they go in with just 21, that's still 6 more players - even if they're only squaddies that still affects the "gelling". Heck we will need a starting CB AND a starting striker at least, if Smeltz goes.

GloryB wrote:
If Smeltz goes and Sernas is no good, then the next priority with be a striker.

Depth there is non-existant with Makeche gone now. Harold could move, but then wing is short of players because Zahra will be gone.

GloryB wrote:
After that, recruitment is important but we are less exposed. Probably need a CB kind of like a Madaschi, with Clisby and O'Neill as back up.

O'Neill should be making a claim for DM, at the very least in a perfect world, backup for Rostyn, whilst Edwards backsup a new #8.

GloryB wrote:
I'd also look around for another decent wide player, but not one who is just an all out flyer. Rather, a wide player who could play more central if required, and use Harold as a more direct wing option as well as back up striker.

Yes well with no Zahra and no Sernas will need someone.

GloryB wrote:
So - 4 new players:
1. Central mid.
2. Striker.
3. Right midfielder, who could also play central.
4. Centre back.

We'd have 2 marquee spots and 3 import spots to get those players.

With the current kids, that would make 21 players, and we could grab a couple more up and comers, say another young wide player and a central mid.

4 players brings the squad up to 18, that's not enough
#9 - [New Striker], Maclaren
LW - Sidnei*
#10 - Marinkovic*, De Silva, O'Brien
RW - , Harold
CM - , C Edwards
DM - Griffiths, O'Neill
LB - Jamo, Woodcock
RB - Risdon, Davies
CB Thwaite, , Clisby
GK - Vuka, Duncan

EDIT : Oh, of course, the above ALSO requires a competent coach with an ability to instil a positive structure. Without that, more of the same to ensue....
I think we're sorta on the same wave length here, although we need at least another striker behind Maclaren, another defensive utility.

Still it's a lot of work, 3 new first XI players, 9 possible changes (plus 2/3 already in Jan) that's a lot for a coach who, according to the plan, is meant to be hired in June. That's a month to scout and get players before pre-season. Meanwhile, other clubs with a Coach steal away all the top Aussies available.

Who are we left with? Edwards managed to raid most of the good WA youngsters last season, who's left at the moment?

Next season already has the rain clouds above it. So depressing.

With 4 new players, you get the list I posted which is 21 players. We might need a few more than that, but those 4 would be the key signings.

The rest would be squaddies or development players. For a third in line DM cover, after Griffiths, O'Neill, we could try someone like Quaqua, who's been knocking on the door for a while.

I agree that the later we leave the coaching position, the more difficult it is to get players and to institute any change - would be much better to actually appoint earlier than that. However, this is less of a problem if 3 of the new players are imports, esp if we could snag Madaschi as the 4th. Imports usually become available a bit later.

I do agree with you that it is really UNLIKELY that the club will have the balls to let Smeltz, Burns etc.. go without a solid plan to replace them, and that either means we are stuck with them and/or we are stuck with Kenny. But I like to remain a bit hopeful, until its actually all gone tits up again next year.

You get 21 players but only 18 in the 23 to be registered. The NYL boys don't count so pretty sure main squad needs to be 20, which is min 6 players if we assume none of the guys expiring are going to be re-signed.

Personally, unless DDS suddenly gets loads of gametime next season, I'm not really liking Marinkovic as sole #10. Doubt we'll see O'Brien either.

Best move for him was to leave.

He has been at the club for 3 years and didn't break into the first tem for a reason, that reason is he is just not good enough. No harm to the lad and I hope he improves in mayalaisa but the chances of him making it is at very best slim.

He will destroy Malaysia, completely dominated the team he signed for when they played Glory in an early-season friendly. Doesn't manage as well against the comparatively more tactically astute defenders HAL has.

It's also a bit harsh to say he isn't good enough. We've demonstrated time and again that we make strikers look awful in our team due to the rubbish middle third.

Might not show on TV, but his work rate off the ball has dropped tremendously this season, and he has been indirectly culpable for a lot of the goals conceded by not tracking back, providing space and a numerical advantage to the opposition. His old tenacity in chasing down lost possession only shows up very rarely now. Has taken to pointing at space that should be filled, seemingly unaware when it is his job to fill it. Looks as jaded out there as I feel in the stands.

Can only think he will decline further as time goes on, so don't feel he should be re-signed.

That's interesting. I didn't get that vibe at all in the few games I've seen him play (live) this season.
I wonder how much of that is due to a change in his role? With Miller gone and no number 10 really stepping up for us, Steve has had to provide a lot of the thrust (through short passing and movement) in attack this season. I suspect we're seeing the worst of Burns and apparently the worst of McGarry because of his increased attacking duties, without really having his defensive duties covered.

For me, he should stay for his ability to slot into a possession based style and he's still reasonably mobile for a bloke his age. He's been pretty close to our best this season Vukovic aside, IMO.

I thought he has been pretty poor, especially in the beginning of the season. Too slow, always a step or two behind when chasing for a player. I would rather see O'Neil get some more experience for the rest of the season. If we lose both Desilva and O'Neil I'm going to be gutted.

IMO McGarry has been amongst our worst for the last few games. Saying that, I thought he had some good performances earlier in the season, but he is slowing up and once you lose his work rate, his passing game etc... ain't enough. His decline may have something to do with playing further back, but he's no longer the answer for #10 and I feel that his time as come.

Not even remotely close to one of the best this season.

Thwaite and Vuka have been best, then it's probably daylight to someone like Sidnei, then more daylight to the rest.

You can't fault McGarry's work-rate but he's looked at sea whether he's being played at #6 or #8 (where he's needed) and a shadow of himself in the few games he's had at #10.

Clearly a great bloke but at 34, there's not really a future for him in at the club. Especially since he "fills" a spot which is the club's biggest weakness.

1) You cannot possibly have both Burns and McGarry taking squad spots next year.
2) If Burns goes, I'd be happy to have McGarry but I wonder if he'd be able to pull the full 90 each week.
3) When you also consider he's a visa player, we unfortunately have to be very scrupulous with those and can we afford to have someone taking a slot who can't pull a full shift each week? Not sure.

Fuck sake. Really? RELEASED? For NO FEE? You'd have to be shitting me. Even if he's unhappy send him somewhere for a fee. Otherwise that flies in the face of Sage's rant about Ali letting people go for free which he'd never do if Sage was involved.

Huge amount of respect for McGarry (got him to sign my scarf) and have been glad to have him in the side.

However, all faithful servants and great players have an end date and I think he's either passed the point of contributing in this league, or getting very near that point.

Time to move on unfortunately.

Loan eh? But wouldn't expect him to be back. Too much crap going on at club leading to shitty performances, more internal conflict PLUS the obvious discontent from the fans also probably p***ing him off. Looks like we need a keeper for next season then too.

A loan would make sense, since our season is over and he probably wants to put the best possible case forward for the staggeringly remote chance of being third keeper at the World Cup (given his form at the start of the season, where he was close enough to be discussed.)

Have been a huge McGarry fan over the last few years, only want to see him moved on because of his increasingly jaded performances and the feeling that he was part of the player power group that has hurt the club this year.

If the main 'old player' group is broken up, Burns is let go completely (no off field role), then I won't flail about if McGarry is resigned with cover or the bench in mind.

Sure spesh if JVS stays on.

This is one of those few times where I'm pretty sure there is no overreaction going on here.

We're simply a complete shambles.

It blows my mind that one week the coach say that they can still make the finals, then the next week they release their number one keeper.

So at the start of the season it was about building around the youth, then oh wait f that , sack the coach, bring in a new coach and lets make da finals! Now what?? Oh bugger it! lets just let go of our best players for free.

A whole season wasted by a owner and a board that has no fucking idea. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)
