Well from the footage there seemed to be a much lower % of people wearing supporter gear, so I wouldn't be surprised if free tickets played a part.

IMO, since the club started the charm offensive re: JB (about 4-5wks ago) (which was presumably and indication that JB himself finally realised the extent of the distrust/loathing for him), JB has put in a much bigger effort. More recently he has got more involved in attack and at times to good effect. However, one wonders why we didn't see that previously.

YEah, I've noticed that too - much more advanced and interactive in the final third - where McGarry is usually the one of the pair who is sitting deeper and a bit less involved. We've seen Burns even draw one or two penalties due to being fouled in the box, as too some fouls, seem some interplays - including his one touch ball that saw Glory's third goal (via OG) last night (Which shouldn't have been allowed due to being Sidnei being off-side and contesting the ball... but ah well).

Glory and their central midfield NEEDED to adjust things and that including needing one of Burns or McGarry to be more involved in the final third, so I guess Burns was the one to do so.

McGarry is so frustrating IMHO - For a VISA player he offers nothing extra. Maybe he was a 'good get' back in Mitchell's day, but now he's mid 30s and more part of Glory's problem/dysfunction IMHO - With Burns retiring now, as too recent recruits Griffiths and Marinkovic settling in for next season, Glory's midfield is already undergoing an overhaul and so it will be interesting to see who the next coaching staff seek to 'replace' Burns and IF they keep an ever older/slower McGarry (Who will be eligible for citizenship soon anyway) or do like Edwards was trending towards and give greater opportunity to the likes of Brandon O'Neill - who's been waiting well long enough for his chance!

Free ticket were given last week too. so rule that one out.

Junior clubs also had players marching around the field at half time. I imagine each of those players probably had at least 1 parent in the crowd. That probably added a bit.

Good point petszk - that's always a winner!

Why are people soo surprised? It's far from unprecedented and infact IS precedented - As Glory members we received notification of this being 'The Community Game' or whatever it was called - It's obviously what they dub the final home game of the season. Last season, or the season before, Glory ALSO drew a big crowd for the final game, something like 13k or more even, for the visit of AU, due to the same/similar reasons, including free tickets, family/junior engagement etc...

And, perhaps this wasn't too big a factor, but we remember how members attending this game would be in the running to win a free 2014/15 membership - That MAY help contribute to the exposure etc... for the game and indeed similar initiatives may have been pursued for that game last year.

And to add to Nate's point 4 about the win/recent results having flow on effect - there would be truth in that too, especially given Glory's crowds have been good/trending the best in their A-League history, till things went belly up, but even then, the crowds were still good including when we lost at home to Wanderers. After that loss and hitting bottom of the ladder, the crowds were finally impacted, but to see them 're-gain' after an up-turn in fortunes is less of a surprise, given they are arguably returning to levels they were at only just a couple of months ago, let alone earlier this season! And that's something quite different from previous seasons including last - the differential between this final crowd and the crowds drawn earlier this season are negligible!

That's reflected in the crowd average for this season - around nine and a half thousand. Not bad at all and still amongst the best season averages in Glory's A-League history. It was and WOULD'VE been hitting 10k, but the Edwards turmoil, fall-out and bad results/missing finals put paid to that momentum. But in the end, arguably only a dip in average of around 500-1000 most. Heck, infact, if the Jets crowd hadn't been soo low, Glory may still have hit the 10k average mark this season?!

Hopefully the kind of momentum we saw earlier this season can be regained once the hopefully exciting new coaching appointment is announced and too his anticipated squad changes. Hopefully we get to see AS Roma 'loanee' De Silva starring more too - I think that alone will renew enthusiasm and it was the impact of the likes of he, end of 2012/13 season which helped enthuse the crowds earlier this season. Hopefully as a 17/18 year old he will be more ready to feature more prominently!

The last home game last season Edwards had just taken over and had us playing for a final spot with some of the best football in the comp, Sage also gave away 10k free tickets and was the opening for the fully redeveloped NIB stadium, that's quite different to playing shit football with no hope of reaching the finals. 11k was surprising.

I was editting my post to add to Nate's point 4, but as I said, in the wider context of the season and the kinds of crowds this team has drawn, it's not THAT surprising.

Arguably, what's more surprising is the fact we somehow drew below 7-8k this season - barely hitting 6k for the Jets was a disappointing anomaly in a season where most of the crowds have been 8-9k at the least!

Edit-
Here:

27 October 2013, hosting Heart (Opening Home Game of the Season) - 13,856
2 November 2013, ADP's SFC - 10,613
16 November 2013, AU - 8,574
23 November 2013, Mariners - 8,923
6 December 2013, 'Distance Derby' Phoenix - 8,232
21 December 2013, AU - 9,436
10 January 2014, Heart - 9,045
17 January 2014, Roar - 11,026
31 January 2014, Victory - 10,151
22 February 2014, Wanderers - 8,543 (0:2 home loss, when Active support were acting up/disgruntled and GFU since moved)
15 March 2014 - Victory - 7,068
30 March 2014, Jets - 5,837
5 April 2014, Mariners (Final home game of the season, traditional turnout) - 11,127

Season Average: 9418

*Red denotes two lowest home crowds of the season

BTW No doubt without some of the 'additional' or boosting factors via tradition/culture as too incentivised, the final game hosting the Mariners may only have drawn 7k or so, given the downward trend, so thankfully there is always that bump up for the final home game, to end with a slight fillip. And unlike the Wanderers game, those 11k punters could atleast go home happy, on the back of not only a Glory win, but a very positive performance. Hopefully a strong enough impression left that a number of those 11k would be interested to return for Season 2014/15!

No, it doesn't. I didn't see the parade of people and kids teams last week, just Jason handing out thirty odd tickets at ECU.

ok you are right 6,000 people turned up with free tickets, actually must have been more if last weeks crowd was also boosted by free tickets.

I never said anything of the sort, just added another factor to the previous list.

8th on GD. Anyone else getting a nosebleed? Thanks Stephen Lucas! Easily MOTM.

Not really sold on Kenny's new formation. The goals last week only came when he was forced to abandon it last week when he brought Sidnei on.

And there's been 2 goals in 2 games from crosses. Don't think that's happened all season.

Sigh. I suppose it is inevitable that Burns will continue to stick around. But really, I am very concerned about this, particulary if he has a role that relates to the A League team (assistant coach etc...). It's no good having a bloke like that with 'mates' in the side and having power over how the team is run. It almost inevitably leads to decisions being made for the wrong reasons. And that's before one factors in Burns' personal character traits.

I'd also be concerned if I was head coach and had Burns as my assistant, given the apparent prominence of his role in killing off the previous permanent coach.

Bosnich shoots down Sage Glory claim

Mark Bosnich has denied Tony Sage’s claim that the former Socceroos goalkeeper is the chairman of a committee formed to select a new Perth Glory coach.

Club owner Sage last week said Bosnich was the chairman of a six-man advisory committee that had narrowed a list of 50 coaching applicants down to six.

He said the list would be cut to three this week, with a permanent appointment to be made soon after.

“It’s been widely known I’m not in the decision-making camp on that,” Sage said on Friday.

“There are six people that have been involved on the committee. It’s led by Mark Bosnich, he’s the chairman of that committee. They’ve met four or five times.

“We had 50 applications, they’ve narrowed it down to six. That will be narrowed down to three this week and then they’ll come and see me.”

Bosnich confirmed he was involved in the process, but moved to clear up confusion over the level of his involvement.

“The story that’s come out is that I’m chairman of the board to select the coach. That’s wrong,” Bosnich told Fox Sports on Sunday.

“Tony Sage is a friend of mine and he rang me about three or four weeks ago and said, ‘would you help me with the coaching situation, would you give your opinion?’.

“I said, ‘of course I will’.

“There were two conditions. No.1, basically, it’s my opinion and it’s nothing to do with who they choose in the end. In other words, I will give my opinion with the benefit of my experience and my contacts in Europe, and it’s up to you guys to make the decision.

“The other condition was get it down to your shortlist because I’m not going to go through every applicant.”

Bosnich said he had only a limited knowledge of the final six candidates for the job and would not reveal any names.

“I’ve never played under any of them, I must say, I’ve only played against one of them,” Bosnich said.

“But all I can do is give my opinion from what I’ve read and also from people who have played underneath them or have played with them.

“I think that’s the most important thing. It is up to them to make their decision.”

Glory have been led by interim coach Kenny Lowe since predecessor Alistair Edwards was sacked in December after a fallout between players and coaching staff.

Bosnich, who played for Manchester United and Chelsea, said he was confident Glory were on the right track.

“They are definitely trying to go about it in the right way. I know that,” Bosnich said.

“I know Tony’s come under a lot of criticism because a lot of people that he’s making all the decisions.

“He’s left this to this board and for everyone to have their opinion.

“But it’s their money in the end, so they’ve got to choose who they want to choose and choose it wisely.”

Glory have moved off the bottom of the ladder with two straight wins and will be looking to avoid the wooden spoon with a positive result in their final game of the season, away to Sydney FC on Sunday.

Maybe I'm being terribly naive, but don't A-League coaches (and assistant coaches?) require a FIFA certain coaching accreditation level? Anyone know if Burns has this - I've never heard/read anything about him doing any coaching courses.

Sage doing best what Sage does best, blaming every one else for the decision to be made.

This is so setting up to have Lowe announced as coach.

Winning the last two games just make the decision seem that more correct.

This is so setting up to have Lowe announced as coach.

Winning the last two games just make the decision seem that more correct.

You are like a broken record.

What are you going to say when Kenny Lowe doesn't get the job?

Be so glad to be proven wrong, like many others here as well.

There is plenty to read between the lines that Lowe will be coach. Put it down to being so fed up with the rabble that is Glory and wise to their lip service. They keep on repeating the same mistakes. I am not holding my breath to see them change.

If I am proven wrong, all the better, I just don't see it happening.

The things that stick in my mind are:

The next coach is always not too far from where the current coach is (e.g. assistant, FFA loanee etc)
Burns is going to have an on-going role with the club, which will be a coaching role. He has his B-Licence.
Lowe and Burns seems quite on good terms as are the rest of the team
Lowe has not started to get results
Lowe will be the cheapest amongst candidates
Brewer has come out and stated that an OS coach will be a risk, better to have a coach that knows the coaching landscape here is Oz
Sage now pushing the decision back onto Bozza, essentially wiping his hands clean of the decision to come
All the noises coming from the cub is that Lowe was doing an OK job, this confirmed with special comments from Thwaite and Burns in recent weeks

I'm just not sensing that urgent push for a new coach any more. Sage will have seen the recent results and believed that Glory have turned a corner.

Shame he doesn't watch the markets close enough, Glory have been through about 6 or 7 dips over the years, let alone the typical financial "double-dip".

His contract runs out at the end of the season and the club will leave a decision on his future to their new coach, who is likely to be appointed this week.

No....no....no!!!!

Why'd they have to spoil this news already. Ugh

1) Typical that TS would bs about this. I'm surprised people still take his word as verbatim.
2) Coach was meant to be announced this week - now we get "down to three". Fucking musical chair statements.
3) "Tony Sage is my friend"....#1 reason why he shouldn't have been consulted
4) What is the point of this advisory board?

Brewer gets names from "Recruitment Company" then HE narrows it down to...6 THEN Bosnich and "Other Aussie" just give their opinion and then BREWER again makes decision?

It's all PR window dressing. ](*,)

Almost certainly won't renew my membership if Burns is still with the club. Definitely won't renew my membership if Lowe is signed on as coach.

Don't see the club pulling out of the current downward spiral with anything other than luck at the moment - and with history to just repeat itself soon again regardless. FMD.

The thing is, I'm sure many fans would have been placated by Sage simply saying Bosnich was involved. Why the fuck does he go on to lie about it?

Realistically who are some players you'd like to see us bring in next season? What gaps need to be filled?

I'd love to see us sign:
Madaschi
Ibini (on Loan or if he gets released)
Nathan Burns
Neil Kilkenny
**Hersi already coming in.

We would have the cap space for most of those players, plus both marquee spots will be available I reckon.

Burns is going and Griffiths isn't providing much, neither is McGarry - defensive midfielder needed. Not sure what O'Neill is like there.

Smeltz hasn't been providing much either and McClaren doesn't appear to be ready to lead as the club's only striker - forward / striker needed.

De Silva is too young to be main attacking mid, REdwards is gone, but we have Sernas, and that other character. Neither seem too flash though. Probably need one of these too.

Is it really worth thinking further? We need everything.

Don't need so many players.

Desperately need a quality #8 (import). McGarry to be retired.

Also need a CB (Djulbic/Madaschi or similar).

If Hersi is comng (I don't want him), then he is cover for wide right and #10 and we can probably get rid of at least one of Redwards or Zahra (or even both). I'd prefer to probably find a wide right player who is more comfortable to cover at #8, rather than an out and out Att mid.

The striker situation depends on Smeltz and Sernas. I think we can contractually release both if we wanted and get a new striker in. Or we could try to continue with Smeltz and hope he can get his body right.

Also need a keeper - Duncan has been good, but a little suspect commanding the box in the air.

After that, I think we can afford to find cheaper players or younger players to fill in the rest of the spots.

Daniel De Silva of Perth Glory set for rich move to AS Roma

Dominic Bossi
Published: April 7, 2014 - 8:59PM

Perth Glory are set to smash the Australian football transfer record with the impending sale of 17-year-old Daniel De Silva to Italian giants AS Roma that could land the West Australian club up to $2.5 million in transfer fees.

The youngster is on the cusp of sealing a move to the Italian capital that could potentially be worth almost double the previous transfer record set by Rostyn Griffiths' $1.3 million move from Central Coast Mariners to Guangzhou R&F in 2012.

Sources told Fairfax Media that Perth Glory are in the final stages of negotiations with Roma for the sale of De Silva, which could be confirmed this week. It's understood De Silva has agreed to personal terms with the Serie A title contenders and the two clubs are formalising minor details relating to various clauses in the deal.

Perth Glory will likely receive more than $500,000 immediately as part of the deal and could stand to earn up to five times that figure depending on certain clauses such as appearances, performances and on-sale fees. As De Silva is only 17, he will remain in the A-League with Perth Glory for the remainder of this season and next before moving after his 18th birthday in March to commence his career under the guidance of Roma coach Rudi Garcia. It is not yet known if he will then train with Roma's youth or senior team.

De Silva became the youngest ever player to sign for Perth Glory when he joined a month before his 16th birthday last year after failing to seal a move to Everton due to visa complications. He captured the attention of several European clubs with a well taken goal and a man-of-the-match performance in Australia's 1-1 draw with Colombia during the under-17 FIFA World Cup in Turkey last year. Italian club Catania were understood to have come close to signing him last year but his family rejected the offer.

Meanwhile, ANZ Stadium could host an A-League Sydney derby for the first time after Football Federation of Australia confirmed its intentions of hosting a potential finals clash between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers at the city's largest venue.

Western Sydney have sealed their passage to the finals while the Sky Blues are on the cusp of securing a top-six finish. Both teams could face-off in a sudden death as early as next weekend.

There are still no assurances for final standings between second and sixth positions on the ladder and the scheduling for the opening round of the finals series remains wide open. Should the Wanderers slip from second to third and Sydney retain sixth position, the two clubs will meet.

“The ... finals series are the premium matches on the calendar and we would like to play the games in the best stadiums to give as many people as possible the chance to experience the unique atmosphere," De Bohun said. "We have the option of playing at ANZ Stadium but the finals series is a very complex picture."
