Oh well, back to the iphone and homework for her.

Exactly.

Perth playing Malaga? (pronounced Mar-lar-gar in Perth)

Who'd pay to watch that.

good see you can still find something to moan about, even if it was a La Liga side much better to forget the result or performance and focus on the fact that there is an industrial suburb of the same name here in Perth.

Just saying.

Only the 5000 punters at the ground yesterday knew who Malaga were.

The missing 10000 thought Glory were playing some bogans from the northern suburbs. Why pay money for that??

Why do you think there was no-one there?

If there was a Liverpool or West Ham etc there would be no confusion there.

If it was Liverpool or West Ham it would have been better promoted and not held at the same time as amateur and social teams play. As soon as local players couldn't attend, any word of mouth buzz about the game was diminished.

7800 for a pre season friendly on a Sunday afternoon whilst thousands of football fans are playing sunday league matches isn't a bad crowd.

Not a good crowd either though is it. Considering Adelaide were able to draw over 20,000 (and Perth has a larger population).

I personally thought the game was well advertised through their internal channels (Glory's Twitter and Facebook advertised the match a lot). Don't really pay much attention to newspapers or commercial TV (so not sure how it went there). They tried to talk up how good Malaga were, so probably were targeting the non-football ethusiasts a lot.

I think the crowd response is more to the poor form of Glory last season, and perhaps the disenchanment of many fans. Not to mention the price was more than usual (considering an exhibition match they should have used the opportunity to lower prices and encourage a bigger crowd, or try to appeal more to the non-current fans).

Good result for Glory, considering early in their pre-season and still some 'growth' to go before hitting their straps for the season proper. Attack still looks a little bit one dimensional, maybe after a few more weeks together some more ways to goal may be found (although Keogh's poacher goal was something missing last season from the team ... so hoping that is the first of many from him).

If you were a non football enthusiast, why would you follow Glory on Twitter or Facebook? The weakness of relying on social media is that you are largely preaching to the converted. In this case, many of the converted were already committed to their own games.

Glory did have adverts in the west and we had a bit of tv coverage but at this time of year papers and tv are filled with Nick Nat's hair and dean cox's retirement etc etc etc

Any way to buy the shirt we wore against Malaga? I am assuming we are not going to wear that in the season, is it an FFA cup strip or a trainign strip? either way, I liked it, and it looks more comfortable to wear than last season's shirt. I think said before on this forum about how I never liked wearing the macron shirt, I just went back to wearing the 2011 blades shirt.
If the shirt we wore against Malaga is available to buy, then I will, but I am guessing it is not. Anyway, the 2009/10 and 2010/11 blades shirt was my favourite, can anyone tell me where I could possibly buy that?

If you're in Perth, try the Jim Kidd clearance store at Harbour Town.

Largely a case of the cart before the horse for Glory I think. Too many of the supporter base are disillusioned (rightly or wrongly matters little). I think a lot more good will had to be won back before a game like this would draw a large crowd.

The crowd was low for a combination of reasons:

Malaga is a Perth suburb. For bandwagoners, Malaga is no different to Malaga. Why would they pay good money to see Perth play a local pub side?
The Perth public have seen enough Glory false dawns to pay good money to see what they have seen before.
I hardly saw/read/heard any publicity for the game and that's being "in the know". What about people not. That was pretty piss-poor.

Adelaide can get 20K Glory 5K (I don't believe the nubers stated by Glory). Says a lot.

Not everyone is stupid. Do you honestly think that and therefore, in the same circumstances Getafe, Grenada or Levante (which are not "Perth suburbs") would have got more?

If it's a joke, it has been made before and wasn't funny then either.

Most people's first thought when they hear that Perth Glory are playing Malaga is "Why did he just pronounce Malaga wrong?".

You must have a very low opinion of "most people".

The reason why the attendance was low was because the Glory brand is tarnished, the game wasn't well promoted and a lot of the people most likely to attend despite that were meeting their own footballing commitments on a Sunday afternoon.

By "most people", I am refering to the majority of Perth residents that would have no interest in attending a football (or 'soccer' as they would call it) match in the first place, regardless of which team we are playing (Unless it's one of the more famous clubs that they have probably heard of, like Real Madrid or Manchester United).

Wo cares about people who have no interest in attending football (in this context)? I thought we were discussing why the game didn't get a larger attendance.

I was more discussing why Glory doesn't get a larger attendance in general, but the same reason applies, most people don't care for football. As for the Malaga game specifically, that was mostly because a lot of the people that would usually attend glory games had other commitments, I did, so I couldn't go, and I am certainly not the only one.

Well, yes. That's what I'm saying.

Spoke to neighbours on the street yesterday afternoon after the game, and to a man (and two women) they honestly thought that Glory were playing Marlargar and not an OS team called Malaga. So obviously they are stupid. When I first read about the game and saw the head lines I had wondered why all the fuss playing Marlargar and almost never read further. I'd expect the average public would have done the same.

If Glory had played Getafe, Grenada or Levante there would have been more of an interest. Who the feck are these clubs???Glory not playing some pub side from a blue collar suburb. It's pretty simple to see the confusion.

Glory probably have a core fan base of about 6-7k that are garenteed to attend every match (or most). That seems about right for the attendance in the Malaga game if you take into acoount the people who couldn't make it. Nobody else cared enough about Malaga to attend.

The general public, the ones that don't follow football that much, would probably have though they meant Malaga as in the suberb and not thought twice about it. Again, lack of general interest in football would have prevented some people from investigating further and finding out that we were playing a spanish La Liga side called Malaga, and not some amature team from Malaga in Perth.

For once I agree with you - your neighbours are idiots.

"Most people's first thought when they hear that Perth Glory are playing Malaga is 'Why did he just pronounce Malaga wrong?'" = "Why Glory doesn't get a larger attendance in general"??

Lack of interest in football from the general public = " Why did he just pronounce Malaga wrong?"
Lack of intrest in football from the general public = Why Glory doesn't get a larger attendance in general.

Would agree with this, esp the first point. The Malaga is a suburb in Perth thing, is I think, just another way to say that Malaga CF are not a well known team, like an EPL team would be.

As for the various comments above about Glory playing better than last year, OF COURSE they are. The change in personnel makes that inevitable, regardless of how they are coached.

The question will be HOW much better. On the one hand, I was pleased to hear Kenny give a lot of specific instruction to the team, even if those instructions were somewhat outnumbered by the number of times he and the rest just yelled out "come on".

Of course, I'd be concerned if the 'school master' approach continues for too long, as he should in time be coaching them as a unit to understand and to approach the game as he would like, without Kenny's hands on the 'game controller'. Time will tell whether these instructions are mostly "reactive", or whether they are being given to reinforce a coherent and understandable pattern of play and lay down team rules in terms of positioning, ball movement, shape etc....

This is another Classic Tony Sage not spending money to make money moment.

LFP funded this tour and they only came to Australia because Sage agreed a the last minute to host one of the games. Malaga were not coming if it was just for one game against the Reds. At most Sage would have had to pay for Stadium hire on the day.

So instead of pumping a bit of money into advertising and getting a big crowd and making $$$. He decides to spend fuck all on advertising and gets an average crowd. Apart from the small ads in the paper I saw nothing decent on Tv and heard no advertising at all on the radio. But of course it will be the fans fault for not turning up!

On a separate note. I'm not too sure it has been mentioned yet but I heard on the Radio that this seasons number 1 ticket holder in Dawn Fraser!!!. I guess she will be able to attend lots of games at NIB whilst living in Sydney! ](*,)

I couldn't fathom the reasoning behind Dawn getting #1 ticket holder. Just seemed bizarre.

Instead of signing a deal with Olympic, they signed an Olympian.

I think one of the problems with Ryan was that he was played central. His Dad fancied him too much as a #10 and he seemed to mostly get played central even in the few post Ali Edwards games that he played.

IMO he doesn't have the touch/finesse for a #10 but he does have a massive engine and could do well as a wide player.
