Agree - we are not realistically going to challenge for anything this season so why go with a one year stop gap option instead of giving Tyson an opportunity to develop for the longer term with Thurtell as #2 and cover.

Another defender. Is he a left back? Need a left back. Senior team doesn't need any other defenders at the moment...but I guess Thwaite is surely going to be released soon. Leaving it a little late though. Stop toying with my emotions Thwaiteeee.

Looking at the team list it is embarrassing to see hardly any WA "youngsters". Just Risdon.

I know people will say that there are no WA youngsters good enough to step up to get first team action, well Risdon is a case in point. He was "lucky" enough to have Neville do his knee and made the position his own. I've said it before and I'll say it again, as long as Sage looks no further than the coming season, Glory will be fucked again. They need to take a long term view of things and build from the ground up. I think the current squad is good enough, but just needs the above key position players and then fill the rest of the squad with WA youth.

Glory did that two seasons ago and it ended with Edwards getting the boot and then Lowe chasing glory last season.

The end result is that Glory are exactly the same position they were two years ago.

Player cull, fresh start, new catch phrase, rah, rah, rah.

I'm putting it out there again, as long as Glory do not look further than the end of this season in terms of results, they will be back in this very same situation in another 2 years.

Just imagine if the "youth revolution" of a couple of seasons ago had been managed better, what fruits Glory might have been harvesting now?

I'm more than happy to have a transparent, strategic, long term vision for the club, if that means short term pain for long term gain.

All I've seen is short term pain for long term pain.

The only youth Edwards was playing, apart from Fergies right back Risdon, was son Ryan who was on loan so in no way could that be seen as long term plan for Glory.

I think you'll find for Edwards, he was regularly playing and using as subs, O'Neill, Davies, DDS, Clisby, etc.

This all came to a head in Melbourne when they toyed with us, as we only had Danny, Thwaites and McGarry on the pitch for experience, with Jacob infamously warming the pine. Perhaps forced by injuries, but Makeche started, Woodcock, Davies, Nagai, Harold, McLaren, Clisby, Son #1, and really, that was that for the match and the coach.

And not happy signing a 40 year old keeper, no matter who he is.
I do wonder the sales pitch Tyson was given, as I would have thought he'd have been aiming for #1 spot.

I was under the impression both Golec and Grant are left footed CBs. From memory the WSW fans were complaining about Golec at LB.

Tyson was playing in Hong Kong so getting back into the A-League system on a multi year contract would have been the main attraction.

In the game mentioned above, Ryan Edwards started and was gash and Cameron Edwards came on as a sub ahead of Burns (apparently triggering an appearance clause in his contract).

13/14 season when Edwards got the job full time

Clisby 4 starts covering for 36 yo injury prone William Gallas
Davies 8 starts covering for injured Risdon
O'Neill 2 starts covering for injury prone 36 yo William Gallas + 1 sub appearance
DDS 1 start 4 sub appearances
Makeche 1 start 0 sub appearances

Ryan Edwards 8 starts + 2subs in 10 rounds
Cameron Edwards 1 start 8 sub appearances

Golec is a handy left footed CB who can play LB if needed. Nowhere near his strongest position.

Poppa used him there too much because he had about 4-5 starting CBs in his squad at the same time. From memory...Topor Stanley, Spiranovic, Mullen, Golec, Hamill....crazy

Newcastle away again in the Cup.

Shit team in a location that is logistically hopeless to get to and unlikely that the game will be shown live because the FFA will be trying to maximise attendance for "their" team.

So much for free entry to FFA Cup games for Glory members.

Honestly, what we seem to have learned is that we have to pay sufficient overs to get in talent from out of state that getting a title-threat squad will put us over the cap. Ergo, we have to base the core of our squad around WA products, even if it means taking a drop in quality, and hope WA juniors come along.

In other news, Glory has taken over management of the Glory Women W-League team.

A story in today's West said that Despotovski could be in the mix for the coach's job but that Jamie Harnwell would be invited to apply for the job.

Harnwell was quite critical of the glory over the salary cap issue so hopefully this does not count against him. I'm not sure he is a great coach but he took them to the Premier's plate and Grand Final last season and IMO he is better suited to the role than Bobby.

Evans is a midfielder and has been playing as an attacking midfielder this season for Perth SC. He would be a squad player providing cover at AM and CM.

he can also play at DM which he did for most of his career at Stirling, would be quite versatile for us none the less

Thanks for that guys, got confused with all the former Glory players who have come through over the seasons.

So he sounds ideal then? With Cam Edwards, O'Neill and some others gone, there is still a place free in that area of the park?

It makes you wonder what Covic costs too - Sure he's 40 and it's a one year deal, so perhaps not as much as his previous A-League stints, but it's still 'Ante Covic' a former Socceroo, ACL Winner's medal etc.. another specialist brought from over East. Vukovic's departure did leave quite a void though and Tyson alone was hardly going to fill it?

Infact he and Tyson - I suppose we don't have any good local or local product keepers about at the moment? That's not sarcasm, but a genuine question.

x2 I obviously agree and reflected in posting history. Just getting away from our same-old, banging heads on brick wall, narrative about promoting local talent and the club taking a view beyond the short-term cycle (Synonymous with Sage-era Glory and even late NSL-era Glory) - I agree with the key positions and sentiment over the coming season Hotrod. Just a couple of astute signings in some of those key areas and Glory already back to challenging Top 6. I think Ruka's signing, along with some good VISAs in those Key areas, will change things. Some people may forget too, Glory still has Keogh, Marinkovic, top-class CB combo of Thwaite and Djulbic, still clinging onto RB star Risdon, Harold is a gun worth more opportunity... Glory has lost alot of talent, but the core is still there?

A lot of different youth keeper been through the club in recent years.

Jordan Fraklin, Devon Spence, Fraser Greenwood, they alos had Mathew Gould and Curtis Aspin training with them.

Fraklin and Spence IMO are not up to it. Not seen too much of Greenwood. Mathew Gould went to England and Aspin is 'too old' to be groomed.

Kid in the 18s/20s Riley Stephenson has potential.

Thanks Begbie, I guess that answers the question. The days of the Petkovic brothers seem soo long ago now. :o

IIIRC Many were suggesting that when Duncan left, post-Vukovic, he was leaving a Glory team where suddenly he was a genuine prospect as #1. I guess we how that plays out now - Glory are pretty much picking up the left-over scraps of the goalkeeping pool in the A-League. To be fair, WSW are doing similarly, signing Andrew Redmayne. Curious times in a country who has always been soo traditionally strong, perhaps even it's strongest, in the goalkeeping department.

Edit: I guess there's old Glory boy, Tando Velaphi - He probably was on his way out at Heart/City too, till his great form this season just past? Speaking of Jason Petkovic, I vaguely recall when Petka was in his twilight season, young Velaphi came through and got a fair shot at the first team. Glory's goalkeeping stocks were soo strong back then.

#WestvsRest seems to have been replaced by #WAPRIDE based on the club's latest tweets.

Who comes up with this shit?

Not to get stuck into superficialities - though it's a long off-season :p - Indeed, it's like they aren't even trying, don't care, at times? :? :p But ... actually it's all a symptom of lack of sustained success really, as thinking about it, it's hard for any club to come up with a good slogan if they haven't won anything for years? :-k

Because you know, if there wasn't this Cap Scandal, Glory achieved top of the ladder and had somehow taken out the A-League Grand Final - The culture around the club, the optimism, confidence, growth factors - that would direct even the PR department to come up with things reflecting that, meaning the pun, 'Glory'. That success breeds success thing. '#A-League4Glory2016' '#GloryPremiers2016' '#Glory4WA2016''#GloryChamps2016' ... '#WestisBest' - Guess I'm no better at this, this job is hard. :p Biscuit can you manage any better? :-k

saying that #WestvRest was so appallingly cringeworthy it gave me a good laugh everytime I saw it.

I hope someone sees him on the street and "runs into him" in an "unfortunate" accident.

:-"

Christ, I thought Glory were past signing 40 year olds.

I'm surprised you're surprised t.b.h

Even from the very beginning there are only two ways we attracted players to this side of the great land.
Either offer them $$$$ to top up their super at the end of their careers eg Covic, Travis Dodd, Gallas et al

or lob obcene amounts of money at them (eg. anyone other than the home grown players when we won the league and of course most of last years team) in order to sway them from signing with an Eastern States club.

lets call it as it is.....
