The assertion that bullies should be bullied back is ridiculous. It makes you as bad as them and all you're doing is justifying their actions to them and exacerbating the problem.

There's a massive difference between resistance and the physical retaliation that zimbos was talking about.

No, they shouldn't take it, they shouldn't give it. In an ideal world nobody should bully anybody, and retribution would be unneccesary. But if someone is bullying you, they generally are doing it because of some complex or past experience in their lives that have made them that way, and it is a much stronger and noble thing to turn the other cheek.

That's such bullshit. As Zim said, not all bullies are victims of something themselves, sometimes they just enjoy putting someone else down. People being bullied should never just take it and turn the other cheek.

lets take the video in here as an example. Hes obviously bein bullied, does he turn the other cheek or try and ignore it and walk away?

We know the outcome of the video, but im asking hypothetically. He obviously had had enough and snapped, do we then assume that his actions are wrong and that he should be punished for them?

Violence begets violence. I think a physical retaliation only results in justification in the bully's mind of their actions.

So essentially eventually they're bullied to the point where they become the bully. All you're doing in encouraging retaliation is creating a bigger problem of kids responding with physical violence to situations that they don't like.

ideally you wouldnt want to encourage violence, but then what would you suggest to the kid in the video. stand there and take it until the bully decides he has had enough?

why would they become the bully, bullying is a constant thing, one act of defiance is not isnt it?

Turning the other cheek may sound the weaker option but in most cases a bully has to be living a pretty pathetic life in that they are forced to bully another person in order to get a rise or self gratification. Walking away, not reacting and turning the other cheek not only shows you are the better man, but it also defeats the bullies purpose, if they can't get a reaction and they keep persisting they look like a dick and are more likely to lose interest.

clearly never encountered rich bullies who have everything for them.

i agree turning the cheek is the better thing to do, but what does one do in a situation of the video for example. the kid has had enough, how long can he turn the cheek for?

Depends on the retaliation. The bully wants a reaction that he can respond to with the upper hand. When the bully gets the shit beat out of them by the person they were bullying they tend to have second thoughts about the bullying.

If you are angry when you try and retaliate the bully wins. If you are more measured and assess your situation before you decide how to retaliate you can win.

Just because one is rich it means they can't live a pathetic life? Just because you have all the material possessions you could desire it doesn't mean you'd be living a rich, happy life.

I meant more in regards to the person themselves clearly having issues with, or just not being content with their own lives which results in them bullying others for kicks, if that's the case and you have the mental strength/self confidence to give them nothing and turn the other cheek then you are doing far better with your life than they are.

the rich kids im talking of are from experience. they didnt live pathetic lives, i know for a fact. i cant speak for all though

its almost a catch 22 situation. you dont know what the bully is going through and you want the bullied to be the bigger man and not use violence as an out, but then what do they do. eventually you snap and just retaliate.

The kid in the video is in an extreme position where a) he's able to significantly incapacitate the bully, and b) found international fame and backing for his actions.

Your day-to-day bully victim encouraged to physically respond is going to end up worse than when they started.

Tbh I've been fairly lucky in that I haven't really had much experience being bullied as I've always been a very easy going bloke in the flesh. However the only real bullying experience I had back at school was with a 'jock' type kid I didn't know well at all and he didn't know me either, yet we had a very strong mutual dislike for each other. Long story short, an alphabetical seating plan forced us to cooperate and we ended up becoming very good mates once we got to know each other. He was one of my best mates by the time I finished school, and although I've lost regular contact with my mates from home, due to me moving to study, I caught up with him at the pub last week and he is still one of the best blokes I know.

My cousin was bullied very badly for a couple of years by this one bloke, this kid moved into his street and they started walking to school together and got to know each other, and eventually became friends. Fast forward 10 years, this bully is one of his room mates and is like a brother to him and even read a speech at his 21st.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, you never can judge someone either way until you actually know them, because more often than not your perceptions are completely wrong.

I tried to make friends with my primary school bully, I ended up getting an apple to the back of the head. So I popped him one across the jaw, and the next week he left the school.

There are some exceptions Fredsta, but some are just incapable of reason. I'm happy for the people in your scenario(s), but unfortunately stories like that seem to be in the minority in my experience. Oh and by the way, I tried every method to get him to stop before resulting to physicality. I hate fighting, and never want to do it again. Just my two cents.
