WGMG: Working Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night shifts. I really don't see the point in having the pub open till 1am. We had 1 customer come in from a quick beer after work between 9pm and close. I had the bar, and the floor cleaned by 11pm. If it wasn't for the fact there were 2 people in the pokies we should have been able to close. Problem is we can't close until the bottle shop closes either. So you're left standing around playing tiddly-winks. Was so bored, I ended up getting permission to clean out the beer lines too, even though their done thrice weekly.

WGMG: So I'm doing a journalism major at uni, and one of the units I've been recommended to take it is a unit called the Design Experience. The tutorial part is called a seminar, and I did a seminar last semester, so I assumed the subject matter would be similar. Turns out it's not. The Design Experience is an arts subject. For some reason, as a journalism student, I have to take an arts unit. I am not in the least bit artistic. I am not looking forward to this semester.

You just said you're doing a journalism major, so I'm assuming you would do things not specifically related to your major. Does journalism come under the Arts?
Also, what would you associate the word design with, if not art?

Not all units are specifically related to my major, you are right. But last semester, every unit did actually have some relevance to journalism, even if it was minuscule, and I could see why I had to do it. This has not one thing to do with journalism at all. At least the other units were actually helpful in some way. Journalism is classed in the Media, culture and creative arts group. The design unit is in the School of Design and Arts, which has very little to do with journalism.

Also, just because design is an arts word, doesn't mean there are other meanings. I thought this unit would be about how texts are designed and created with a purpose in mind, like the one I did last semester.

University of Melbourne makes us take 'Breadth' subjects which have to be completely outside your course area, this semester I'm complementing my History Major with 'Music and Health' which has been selected on the basis of having no compulsory classes and ridiculous assessments. Yeah the whole concept is a joke, and you have to complete four over the course of your degree.

It's a waste of time, I've always been the sort of person who has known what I've wanted to study and has had no interest in studying anything outside my interest area, so I hate being forced to select a ridiculous subject I have no interest in.

wgmg: uni starts back up on monday.

it's not the doing uni that bothers me - it's the less hours i'll be at work so the more i'll fall behind and the more blame is put on me for said delays.

btw - newy uni makes everyone do 20 units of general electives to "expand the mind". everyone in engineering does an introduction to microsoft excel subject, and intro to guitar. personally i just used my D's from my original physiotherapy course i went to uni to do in the first place. in our degree we also have to do a philosophy course. random, but fluff subjects that are just another large number added to a hecs debt.

Terrible.

Jay is more of a loser than Will in that version. It's stupid how they're just pretty much re-shooting the English version, it'd be better if they came up with their own plot lines. That trailer looked terrible.

The whole show revolves around the idea of Will being the biggest loser but imo Jay and Simon are just as bad if not worse, Neil is just a loveable mong.

I'm pretty sure this is produced by MTV, they did the same with the US adaptation of Skins, by largely just re shooting the original, and it got shafted pretty quickly so we can only hope the same happens here.

I know it's not journalism, but I work as part of the 'design' section at my engineering consultancy and I don't do any art.

As pv said, in Newcastle engineering degrees, we have to do a philosophy course. I doubt that at any uni all your courses are largely related to what you're doing.
