i heard on the radio a couple weeks back a discussion about what is the difference between a referee and an umpire??

The best explanation callers gave was that referees are the sole officiator and have assistants, where as in sports with umpires, the umpire has equal power with his colleagues?? does anyone know??

In hindsight i should have started a thread.

quite simple, a refferee is for any sport stemming from 'soccer' and an umpire is everything else. A "referee" is from back oldschool football, the two captains would officiate for the teams and any disagreements would be "referred" to the "referee", and the term has stuck. The definiton of Referee you heard on the radio is incorrect because in NFL, they have two "referees". An Umpire is jsut for every other sport I guess.

I'm jsut lazy and cant be bothered, there's probably some FIFA ruling against it.

Ok I will say it in here.

It seems lately you guys are starting to flood the boards with useless banter that goes way off topic very quickly. Then you all drag other members into the dribble and then it becomes a "he said, she said" back and forth of nothing.

For a casual observer that comes to the forums once in a while, the place looks like a little 1337 town with a few members running the show and jumping on anything and everything any other non IC member posts.

It looks even worse when a visitor to the site reads an article, scrolls down to the comments section and sees multiple pages of crap. It does not help the image of the website (these are the visitors that do not go to the forums but just read the news and read the comments, and may comment once or twice themselves).

You may not like how a member posts or their age or something, but let the mods deal with it. If you have a problem, PM a mod. Don't bring it upon yourself to attack said poster on their posting style or opinion, because then all hell breaks loose and it quickly goes to 5h1t.

So keep it on topic and stop the mindless banter. Thats what this thread is for.
