I doubt they'd take him if it was for free.

They could get Michael Theoklitos for a pie and a can of soft drink. $2m for Galekovic, Schwarzer must be worth $20m then.

Quote:Portsmouth eyeing Adeaide Utd keeper Galekovic 29.12.09 | tribalfootball.com West Ham send SOS to Palace striker Sears Portsmouth are eyeing Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic. The Sun says Pompey boss Avram Grant will move for Galekovic should they sell David James to Tottenham next month. A £2 million fee has been mentioned, though with Adelaide not flush with cash a bid of less than a quarter of that would be enough for the Aussie club to snap Pompey's hand off. http://www.tribalfootball.com/portsmouth-eyeing-adeaide-utd-keeper-galekovic-536811

I think Galekovic would alright at Portsmouth, although i doubt Adelaide would get the $2 mill for it. That'll be a suprise. 1 million at most me thinks. As long as Galekovic doesn't have a howler like poor old Michael Theoklitos did for Norwich City in his first game, i'm sure he'll be fine. And it'd do his future International chances a world of good, especially if he was number 1 and stayed fit.
WOLLONGONG WOLVES FOR A-LEAGUE EXPANSION!

a 2million pound deal would be excellent..especially for a keeper which we there are plenty of.. the suggestion that adelaide should accept less because they are 'poor' is very annoying!
if we could consistently get transfer fees like this we'd be making gains in no time...so long as we can churn out replacements
sell galekovic sign theoklitos/higgins

Adelaide would need to sign a replacement....Glen Moss perhaps or Clint Bolton who is rumoured to be leaving Sydney.

Only until they had paid wages up to date and have their finances in order....i believe a new owner came in a month or so ago so it should be okay for them to sign players now.

Cool, let's hope so - Would be a massive thing for the league - he's certainly worth that price tag. We need A-League teams to reap the compensation they deserve for on selling these leading talents of our league. BTW I know there's a little controversy with the State League compensation thing, but that's another discussion. I still remember when Sydney FC sold Carney to Sheffield United of all places, for that very paltry sum of $150,000 or whatever it was. Apparently, 'part' of the reason for that was he did not have that much of his contract that, and/or he had a 'minimum fee release clause' in his contract, which if that were the case, $150,000 was far too low for a then leading A-League talent like Carney. Galekovic is in his prime and has obviously been the A-League's leading GK for the last few seasons now. He's well on top of his game and tbh he can't reach any further in this league. He's tried Europe before, a few seasons ago before the A-League, but that was a brief, unsuccessful stint in Portugal. This could be his second chance and at a time where he is the best prepared he will ever be, in his career. Galekovic moves to Pomey and hopefully gets a good crack at being their #1 - A great, once in a career, opportunity for him. AU will get a huge bounty for their prize asset and will find a suitable replacement, because when it comes to GoalKeepers Australia has plenty of depth in it's talent pool there. Galekovic will be hard to replace, but it won't be hard to find another, quality, Australian GK out there, A-League based or not. And IF Galekovic DOES get a chance at being #1 there - then it helps our league tremendously, helping to prove 'it's not soo bad'/'it's getting better' after all. I'm all for it, would be great for Eugene and for the HAL.
But the irony of Adelaide sitting dead last and sinking is not lost on me.

Adelaide supporters don't rate Birighitti? If they did sell Galekovic then I think they have a ready made replacement. The team needs strengthening in many other positions and Birighitti has shownn promise in his few fleeting appearances to warrant an opportunity. Hopefully this deal goes through, even though I reckon it'll be closer to $1m Aus.

Fox have picked up the story now. Quote:Portsmouth tageting Adelaide United star Eugene Galekovic By Val Migliaccio December 30, 2009 Barclays Premier League club Portsmouth is set to offer Adelaide United an A-League record $3.6 million for Socceroos goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.
It's understood Pompey boss and former Chelsea manager Avram Grant has targeted Galekovic to replace England international David James if the veteran moves to fellow Premier League rival Tottenham Hotspur during the FIFA transfer window, which opens for business at midnight on New Year's Day.
"I'm going to let my agent deal with everything," Galekovic said from the Socceroos' training camp in Dubai last night. "Right now it's just speculation."
However Portsmouth's bid to claim the current A-League Keeper of the Year could stall because of England's work permit restrictions. The 28-year-old does not have a European Union or British passport.
England's law for foreigner footballers states that imports must either have relevant documents to reside in the original homeland of football or play 70 per cent of their home nation's international matches over the past two years to qualify.
Galekovic only has two Socceroos caps this year.
"I've got a Croatian passport and an Australian passport," he said. "If they are really interested I really don't know how they're going to get me across.
"It's exciting, they're in the English Premier League and they're still a big team.
"To go to a team like Portsmouth would be unreal."
Galekovic will claim his third cap next Wednesday when Australia face Kuwait in an Asian Cup qualifier in Kuwait City.
Should the deal come off Galekovic will net the A-League the highest transfer fee for an Australian-based player heading overseas. Former Adelaide United striker Bruce Djite holds the A-League record when he was sold to Turkey's Genclerbirligi for a reported $850,000 last year. http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26535803-5000940,00.html

We haven't seen enough of him as Galekovic has been fit and fighting clean. I've seen Birighitti around 5 times this season playing for the Baby Reds and he looks fine. Is he ready for the full-time gig, should Galekovic move? Possibly yes.

Quote:Reds deny Galekovic rumour 30 December 2009 | 13:51 - AAP Reports linking English Premier League club Portsmouth with Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic are wide of the mark according to the A-League club. English newspaper The Sun claims Portsmouth are preparing a bid of up to £2 million ($A3.61 million) for the Reds' goalkeeper as a replacement for England international David James, who is apparently a target for Tottenham Hotspur. But an Adelaide United spokesman said there had been no contact between themselves and the Premier League's bottom-placed club. "We'd never stand in the way of letting Eugene go overseas, but we haven't heard anything from Portsmouth or any other club about him," the spokesman told AAP on Wednesday. Even if Portsmouth were lining up a move for Galekovic, who is currently in the Middle East with the Socceroos ahead of next week's Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait, it seems such a switch would be unlikely. The troubled club is currently under a transfer embargo due to outstanding fees owed to other clubs. And Galekovic, who has two Australian caps, would find it almost impossible to secure a British work permit due to the limited number of international matches he has played. To be able to play in England, Galekovic would require a European Union passport which he doesn't hold or have played 70 per cent of their country's matches over the past two years. "I've got a Croatian passport and an Australian passport," Galekovic told Foxsports from Dubai, where he is in camp with the Socceroos. "If they are really interested I really don't know how they're going to get me across. "It's exciting, they're in the English Premier League and they're still a big team." http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/adelaide-united/reds-deny-galekovic-rumour-273047
