THE Rockhampton football club celebrated its 100th anniversary at Pilbeam Park on Saturday with a number of social games.

Nerimbera Magpies’ women’s team charged out on the fields against a Rockhampton invitational side and beat the guests 2-nil.

The first division Nerimbera men’s team then stepped up against another Rockhampton invitational team and came out on top with a 6-nil win.

Club president Clyde Wode said it was all for fun.

The most interesting game of the night was the clash between an over-40s Nerimbera side which played out a 3-all draw with Frenchville, with players coming from far and wide to take part in the action.

“The over-40s team had guys from all over Australia who came for the celebration, they were all ex-players from both clubs,” Wode said.

“Sterling McQuire made the penalty shot to finish the game – it was a good result but they were just out to enjoy themselves.”

Wode said ex-players included Peter Miller who came up from Canberra, with other players travelling from Darwin.

“We also had a grand parade which had all of our junior players, all our current players and players from all the decades right from the 1950s to 2000,” Wode said.

The celebrations started early morning with the non-competitive junior games. Matches continued throughout the day in other divisions. With more than 500 spectators and players at Pilbeam Park on Saturday, Wode said the day could not have gone better.

“We had been planning this celebration for two years. It has been a great success,” he said.

“I hope we are here for another 100 years.”
