THE qualifying round of the Milan Lakoseljac Memorial Trophy produced mixed results yesterday.
New Town Eagles, Ulverstone, Taroona, Nelson Eastern Suburbs, Tasmanian Institute of Sport and Kingborough all advanced to the second round of the competition.
The six sides will join Burnie United and Somerset in the next round after the North-West teams opponents, Beachside and University respectively, withdrew from the competition on the eve of yesterdays fixtures.
Eagles advanced with a convincing 3-0 demolition of fellow Southern Premier League opponent Olympia Warriors at South Hobart.
The visitors opened the scoring on 20 minutes when Olympia failed to clear Ben Whitehall's cross and Alex Leszczynski pounced on the loose ball, firing a shot into the bottom left corner of Dmitri Nester's net.
Eagles struck the woodwork three times in the first half, as they continually peppered the Warriors' goal but had to wait until the 75th minute mark to score their second when Jamie Vernon rifled home following a neat one-two with substitute Shane Kent.
With a minute remaining, Eagles completed the demolition when Whitehall stole the ball from Jaydan Wiggins on the backline and squared to an unmarked Leszczynski to tap home his second.
"I think it all started with the win on Saturday against Taroona -- the good vibes have carried across despite not having much recovery for this game," Eagles coach George Krambousanos said.
Kingborough Lions advanced on a penalty shoot-out after they were held to 3-3 draw at Lightwood Park against Launceston City.
Lions went 2-0 up through Brett Andrews and Tom McDonald but City responded with two goals from new-signing Steve Throup.
City then took the lead in the second half but Ross Hinkley drew the home side level to force the match into extra time.
The Lions had their keeper, David Leamey, to thank for a 3-2 victory in the penalty shoot-out after he saved three of City's penalties.
In a one-sided encounter, Taroona thrashed Division One outfit Northern Suburbs DOSA 9-0, with debutant Alex Viney scoring four goals, Toby Dove netting a hat-trick and Marcus Atkinson and Jack Elliott scoring singles.
Two goals from Brayden Mann gave Ulverstone a 2-0 away victory over Metro at North Chigwell, while the Tasmanian Institute of Sport overcame Launceston United 3-1 at Birch Avenue through goals from Will Abbott, Hugh Foley and Jamie de Schmidt.
Thomas MacQueen replied for the home side. In the final qualifying fixture, Nelson defeated Division One rival Hobart United 4-1, with Ryan Mills, Matt Fone, Tom Gordon and Andrew Gaskell getting on the scoresheet, while Justin Letiko scored United's consolation.
