If Australia somehow manages to overcome the group stages and get past England, who do you think our most likely opponent will be come the quarter final?

It would pretty much be out of:
France
Uruguay
Mexico
South Korea
Argentina

PS. I'm aware that we're not guaranteed England, but it's the general consensus.

Quite frankly I'm also sick of all the negativity. As far as I'm concerned, the Australian national team hasn't put a foot wrong in recent times and we have good reason to be confident. I don't like it how easily dismissive people are of the socceroos for not playing 'pretty' and blowing teams away by 4 or 5 goals.

The criminal part about all of this, is that these same supporters will act like they were supporting the team the whole time if they win. "Woooo! Yeah! We knew you could do it!"

PS. In case anyone hasn't noticed yet, the question 'if Australia beat England who would we face next' is a hypothetical question.

They (The experts; though I'd say you're far from an expert) predicted Australia would finish bottom of their group in 2006, so I'll keep believing it despite what the 'experts' say, thanks.

By the way, how many handballs and Sepp Blatters will France require to get out of their group? ;)

Ok out comes the wall chart:lol:

Now assuming we come 2nd and England come first and we get past England we would be facing either France/Nigeria imo. That's the most likely. Now I'm assuming that France will come first in their group and Aregntina top theirs so and Nigeria come 2nd in their group so we would play the winner of Nigeria vs France.

The winners of a possible match between Australia and England will play either the winners of group A (France or Uruguay) or the 2nd place of group B (Greece, Nigeria, S Korea).

after reviewing the Groups... Argentina won't come top they'll come 2nd (i think trev was abit radical to say that they won't get out of the group on the podcast but i agree i think they'll struggle)... so i reckon that would be an Argentina vs Mexico/France (i don't think Uruguay are that good and don't think they'll get out of there group) and i would back the Argies to get up for that one... and.wait.no.way.please.yes.please.yes.oh.fuck.it's.on ENGLAND VS ARGENTINA FUCK YEAH!

Are you sure it's just not personal bias and your desire to play them in the quarter final that you think Argentina will come 2nd in their group?

I reckon Greece will come top with there tight rearguard... it's a group where most of the teams are alright but nothing more, Nigeria will be up for it cause it's in Africa, Sth Korea will be a stumbling block for teams but i don't see them getting out of it really. Can Argentina pull things together maybe? they'll be good enough to get out of the group but i'm pretty sure they'll be a hiccup on the way somewhere with a team that is really struggling for cohesion. Either way i think it will be either France or Argentina, and i fancy the Argies to beat France, because France are in deeper shit than Argentina... either way it's an old fashioned rivarly i think, and a real tester for England, there last 3 World Cup's (and last Euro in 04) they could only crack the Quarter Finals. England would be the better team i have no doubt but it's about there bottle if they'll be able to overcome

Otto Rehagel is the name you're looking for.

They have made 3 major tournaments and got lucky at one.

At the 1994 World Cup they bombed out at the Group Stage(funnily enough with a group including Nigeria and Argentina as well) with 0 goals scored and 10 conceded.

Euro 2004 they got lucky game after game.

They were an epic fail in WC 2006 Qualifying.

Then Euro 2008 another epic fail.

I can't see how they are a tournament team. They play the most bleedingly boring football in the world and will put people to sleep in the WC. They will finish bottom of their group with no wins and maybe a draw from the Korea game.

They beat France and the Czech Republic with lucky goals in ET and beat Portugal in the final due to a mistake from the GK.

And you're right Gold aint no bronze but we are talking about a WC here not Euro's so in that case Croatia has done infinitely better then Greece. At lease we've scored a goal at the WC unlike Greece:lol:

My point is that Greece will do shit at the WC and were lucky at Euro 2004 which was proven by the epic fail that they were at everything after Euro 2004.

Socceroos, England will be an epic encounter

Could June 26, 2010, be the biggest day in Australian sporting history? The Americas Cup win in 1983, Cathy Freeman’s run at the Olympics in 2000, and Kieren Perkins 1500 meter triumph in the pool at the Atlanta games, could soon be joined or even surpassed in Australian sporting lore.

The venue for the biggest event in the nation’s sporting history? Not the MCG or Flemington Raceway, but the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, on the outskirts of Rustenburg, South Africa.

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek or any of his media savvy players will tell you they are only focused their group matches or even first-up opponent Germany. But as fans, we can contemplate what might lie ahead and salivate at the prospect of a meeting with the old enemy, England.

The equation is simple.

If England tops group C, as expected, and Australia can book a place in the round of 16 behind the Germans, the stage will be set.

Two nations a world apart, but eternally linked, will stop. Citizens will collectively draw breath and every Ashes match will pale in significance.

Both countries are mesmerized by the now constant stream of Ashes series, but a knockout game at the World Cup presents a once in a lifetime opportunity, a chance to strike a devastating blow to the pride of ‘the mother country’.

The English have made public their desire, above all else, to beat Australia: in particular, at the London 2012 games, but even that would not redeem a World Cup defeat in the game of their creation.

Last time the two sides met, in a 2003 ‘friendly’ international at London’s Upton Park, the Aussies triumphed 3-1, but the English shrugged off the result as meaningless.

There would be no escaping the result in South Africa.

Historically, that match saw the debut of England’s youngest ever international – Wayne Rooney, who would later turn villain in 2006 after being sent off as the English exited yet another World Cup.

He will again carry their hopes in 2010.

As a spectacle, the match-up would capture the country’s imagination like nothing else. As a conquest, it would be Australia’s greatest of all time.

I hate articles like that, because it downplays all of Australia's other sporting achievements. I particularly hate people saying Aloisi's penalty being 'Australias's greatest ever sporting moment,' when it was only a qualifier. Sure, it was a nice moment, but to say it surpassed everything Australia has achieved in cricket, rugby, swimming, hockey, etc etc, with a mere WCQ is just disrespectful IMO. If Australia makes a semi-final at the World Cup then PERHAPS it should be considered one of the greatest.
