Tim Cahill and Aussies plan to catch the Germans cold
By Adam Roberts May 06, 2010

Australia enjoyed their best World Cup campaign in Germany four years ago, where they reached the last 16 before losing in controversial fashion to eventual winners Italy’s last minute penalty.

Pim Verbeek, Guus Hiddink’s former assistant whilst in charge of South Korea in 2002, is the current coach and he guided the Socceroos to an unbeaten qualification campaign.

They have been drawn in a tough looking group that includes Germany, Ghana and Serbia, but star midfielder Tim Cahill says the squad are looking to get off to a good start in the opening game against the Germans.

“We know they are very disciplined and tactically very strong but, as it is the first game, there’s no reason why we can’t catch them cold,” said the Everton player, who has scored an impressive 14 goals in 37 international appearances.

Looking back on that agonising defeat against Italy four years ago, Cahill added: “It hurt, especially with the penalty being given when we were so close to extra time and with them having only ten men.

“I remember standing there, putting my hands on my head and thinking ‘please don’t shatter my dreams’.

“The only positive I can take from it is that Italy went on to win the World Cup and we were one of their toughest opponents in the competition.

“I think things happen for a reason. For us, it was a great learning experience because it showed that if you don’t punish a team with ten men during 90 minutes, then anything can happen.”

On his excellent goalscoring record for club and country, the 30-year-old said: “I think I’ve got a knack of scoring goals and being in the right place at the right time.

“But my priority is to work hard and do a job for the team. It’s great that people say that about me, but I have to make sure I keep doing it on a regular basis.”http://www.givemefootball.com/internationals/world-cup-countdown-australia

Um maybe the fact that Germany never start a tournament badly is a reason why we won't catch them cold. It's not like we are a surprise packet FFS. Germany will know what to expect from us and we are going to find it very very very difficult to even try and get a draw.

There is a first time for everything and I am confident (read: hopeful) that the Aussies can catch them cold, then park the bus!

We see it all the time with big teams... i really think the squad Loew has named has been designed to 'play into' a world cup. Ie use the group as warm up for the second round, which i guess many top sides do. But the youthful nature of the German squad could catch them out early on.

Of course they are way stronger than us on paper, but a draw is possible first up. Look at the spine of the German squad, where are their leaders? There's a lot on Ballack's shoulders, Khedira's a great midfielder but young. He's picked a squad on form which is great. But they do rely on a sense of inevitability about progressing... which they're entitled to... but for me that's just an opportunity for our boys to react to.

Each team plays each other once...that result goes on the table, each team will read "Played: 3" at the end of the tournament, there are four teams in the group. Ergo, they play 12 games. The man is brilliant! He gets TWICE AS MANY games out of his season asn the regular football fan does.

Their squad isn't any more youthful than any other squad really. And there's a lot of experience in that midfield.

Yes, you missed the joke. I already said that each team plays each other once. I then explained how I managed to turn that around to look like twice as many games and that he was getting twice as many games out of this as every other fan.
