Television broadcasters who have invested billions of dollars in next month's World Cup have revealed the dream final they are hoping for.

They have also disclosed the nightmare final, which features the All Whites.

The New York Times says the World Cup is expected to provide television broadcasters with a welcome boost to viewership and advertising. But the soaring price of TV rights means that few will actually make money from the event.

Quoting Kevin Alavy, director of Futures Sport and Entertainment, which conducts advertising research, the New York Times says the average live audience for a World Cup final could be as high as 350 million.

"A lot will depend on which teams progress to the final," the newspaper reported.

"For broadcasters, the dream match-up would be Brazil vs England, Mr Alavy said, because those teams historically have attracted the biggest international TV audiences.

"The worst potential pairing: New Zealand vs North Korea."

I have the inside word that no Rights Holding Broadcasters (or at least our one) ever make their money back from the Olympics, they just outbid each other for the prestige for their brand, which I can't dissagree with. Wouldn't a all be surprised if the same went for the World Cup, at least in most territories.

Haha, so if NZ and Nth Korea don't make the second round, it must have been rigged by the broadcasters.

I've heard something similar about big sporting events. A lot of the value in broadcasting these events comes from advertising the upcoming seasons of their regular shows. Like how you can't watch the Australian Open for more than 5 minutes without seeing an ad for Desperate Housewives, Dancing with the Stars, etc.
