i think australia has learned important lessons - do not experiment at the world cup, do not get red cards and keep composure against big opponents.

aussies can hold their heads up, terrific performance tonight and against ghana. such a shame that the refs killed it for them. i feel especially sorry for harry kewell, but he will soldier on. cant wait to see him in 2014 as captain ;)

Australia should surely have already known that. Never, EVER experiment at a WC. By then you've had 4 years of learning your side to perfect the process. That was sheer bullshit.

The Red Cards, can't be helped. We were victimised by the refs. Shit happens. Move on.

It's definitely something to be proud of, these last two gamse though. 2014 - LOOK OUT!!!

"There are no lessons." - Pim Verbeek when asked what we've learned from the World Cup. And that's why australia think you're an idiot.

If Kewell hadn't been sent off and we'd beaten Ghana...

If Cahill hadn't been sent off and we ony went 2-0 down against the Germans...

If Pim hadn't been scared of the Germans thrashing us and playing defensive...

If...if...if...

Great performances that earned us 4 pts. A win and draw at World Cup group stage should be within our capability if we are organised and clever, as demonstrated in the last 2 matches. Serbia are a great team, and we've just knocked them out. Our 10 men v Ghana were unlucky not to take 3 pts.

But the world watched us against Germany, and that won't be forgotten. They'll go far - as did Italy in 2006.

Brilliant performance by Australia. I think we played fantastically. A little shaky early on, but we definatly held our own against a Serbian team with a lot of talent.

Definatly getting a Brett Holman Socceroos Jersey , i'll name my son after Brett Holman. I wasn't a fan of his, but he's defiantly been tucking into the Weet-Bix in recent weeks. Pim finally got it right today, Everyone was tipping us to lose to Serbia, but we litually played flawlessly. Wonderful stuff by the Aussies, I think Pim finally learnt his lesson, albeit it being too late, but we can look back on this world cup with fond memories. For the majority we played well when we were written off.

Heads up lads, we've done well i feel. Unlucky, we had many calls go against us, but i think we defied the odds by beating Serbia. This'll be a big morale boost to all Aussie fans, and players. They can hold their heads up high and be proud of their performance.

There'll be a lot of what-ifs. But you gotta take the good with the bad, and i think this is the best way we could have ended the tournement.

In the words of one of the Martin Tyler "We were facing a challenge as high as the mountain in Cape Town" and to have scored 4 against Serbia would have been difficult. We got halfway there, and that proves we can perform at the highest level, against the best teams. The boys should be congratulating each other, we didn't deserve the 4-0 thumping at the hands of Germany, we didn't deserve some of the rash calls against us, but our performance against Serbia will be a good morale boost, the really happy side of this world cup.

and hey, we went through the entire match without having a player sent off, that's gotta count for somthing ;)

The Boys are legends, every single one of them,

I've been very critical of Fozzy but throughout this World Cup he's really showed how much he loves the game in this country. He can sit next to Holman at my free pass table.

I think Fozz is a great bloke, and indeed if he gets a paper cut he bleeds Green and Gold. He loves the Socceroos, but we can, and he can, all look back on this performance with a happy note. Had we had our time again with Germany, i have no doubt we'd have held them to a draw, or at least a low loss.

Like i said before, and as afro pointed out, there's a lot of what-if's. There always is. But i think we can take strength from this performance, and use it in upcoming games, and in the Asian Cup.

When Serbia got that lucky goal? yeah, me too. The ref tried his best to make it happen but we held on.

I hope the press keeps up it's positive coverage on the Socceroos. Except that one game against Germany which I put down to a bad gameplan we were fantastic.

The biggest things to potentially take from this world cup are:
- Brett Holman. He may have finally arrived on the big stage. It's taken four years, but he's had a series of good performances and made a real difference to the way we've played between the lines.
- Luke Wilkshire. Last world cup we were all asking "who?". This world cup he's been an absolute star playing overlap with Brett Emerton on the right, definitely going to have a huge Asian Cup next year.
- Pim Verbeek. He took three years to get us playing well. He may well be the slowest human being of all time, but he got there.
- Carl Valeri. Stepped straight in to the void left by an out of form Grella and did so seamlessly. Absolute superstar who did the shirt proud.
- Josh Kennedy. He may not be banging in the goals, but when Joshie's on the pitch, we attack SO much more, it's like chalk and cheese compared to when he's off.

Hopefully the administration have learned a LOT from this cup, and they're finally seeing what many fans already knew. And hopefully the next man to take the helm has been paying close attention to what this collection of warriors can do. Because they can do more than do us proud. To push an insanely tough group all the way like that is fantastic, this was probably the closest group of the lot and we've shown that we've got the potential to go further. Much further. In 2014, we should be looking at making it to the stage of 16 as a MINIMUM requirement, bcause the collection of talent will be just as good, if not better in 4 years.

Yes, but he also said that he'd learned nothing. Which means to say he'd still do exactly the same thing again, despte knowing that the GD will kill us and that we CAN and have played better. For me, that's just fucking stupid and another reason to be glad he's gone and be moving on.

a lot of good australian players probably playing their last world cup.. cahill for 2014 ;)

I'm glad holman has answered to his critics and I'm just glad the boys had the spirit to rub that 4-0 off their back. you'd think any other team would just fall a part e.g france but with us we've always had a never say die attitude. it just disappeared against germany because we feared them, we played unfamiliar tactics and unfortunately due to some erratics calls by refs this world cup we've been very unlucky.

Schwarzer was just outstanding as usual and if he's good enough in 2014.. why not!
I've always said its not the age that matters, its the skils and if you have the skills that are better than any of yer peers then you deserve to be there. sometimes, people like graham arnold and pim will fuck you over but whatever I'll leave that for another day.

there are a lot of what ifs, we emulated the same points of 2006, we showed we demand respect and I'm bloody proud to be an australian right now.. looking forward to the asian cup! Our future looks bright esp if we choose the right coach, cause our attitude never left us :)
