Two ex-Melbourne Victory players in the Bangkok Glass side - Sutee Suksomkit who got 2 goals (as shown above) and also Ney Fabiano, who picked up a yellow card on 90 minutes and was subbed-off on 93 minutes. Can't remember where I saw it now, but the Quarter-final against Bangkok Glass will be on in late September/early October - just after the Singapore Grand Prix. My partner and I are likely to be in Malaysia and Singapore around that time so if our trip coincides with the SMFC Quarter-final, we may go along to cheer them on. A word of warning to anyone planning on going - accommodation prices in Singapore in the week up to the end of the Grand Prix on 26 September will be horrendous, probably around double what you'd otherwise pay!

As I've said elsewhere - if we do well out of it, I fully expect to see a couple of A-League sides in the competition in the future. It was a very logical decision by the FFA to let us test the waters, as it were. a.league.addict wrote: Great result for SMFC and a pointer what this club needs to do to win important games and improve its image and its chances of playing in a future 2nd tier: Find a home base overseas and play the home games out of there. A win-win for everyone except... Oh yeah, the supporters - or to put it more accurately, the members of the club. I would still like smfc to compete in the cup regardless

I don't think Singapore have good teams. Back when Perth Kangaroos (now the Glory) used to play in the Singapore league I think they won every match or something along those lines. I know it was a long time ago, but maybe things haven't changed all that much

Good Stuff by South Melbourne. Well done - Gombak United were last years winners of the Singapore Cup, so they should be quite proud of themselves. StiflersMom wrote:I don't think they are playing extremely competitive teams. I can see where you're coming from, but there are a few decent players playing in the league, I'd say the leagues on par with the Indonesian Super League. But before you write them off for good, just analyze this: Tampine Rovers did beat North Queensland Fury last season in a friendly....

I think this is fantastic not only for South Melbourne but football in general in Victoria/Australia, it highlights that there is some depth to our football down here.

im more impressed with the fact that the team was able to leave the cold in melbourne and still perform in the 35 degree heat in Singapore, only had 1 day to prepare for the match as well.

i recon its a great initiative for SM to play in an international cup. grows our presence in asia, shows the ffa that the national league teams, even if there semi-pro, can still play well and for a team with such pride and history i think its important for them to establish themselves as a prominent Australian team, even if they arent in the HAL.
might give more weight to the proposed FA cup style cup in australia??????????

Why would an A-League side play in the Singapore cup? It's better if souths, a VPL side, play in this comp. It would help development in this country.

Lol, MarkD, its not the team that should be in the A-League it's the players, if they are that good an A-League team will pick them up.
I don't think they are playing extremely competitive teams.

Why is a state league side in this again? What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Souths Impress In Singapore Cup? SOUTH Melbourne has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Singapore Cup after a shock 2-1 victory over Gombak United last night.Have your say.
