Quote:Sydney United scrape win against Wolves 06.06.10 20:32
Sydney United's rising star Ante Tomic (right) was the Reds' hero scoring the only goal of the match keeping his side in striking distance with the top of the table on Sunday against the South Coast Wolves at WIN Stadium. (Photo by John Dowling) Sydney United continued their charge for the top of the table with a hard fought 1-0 victory over South Coast Wolves at WIN Stadium on Sunday. After an entertaining, yet goalless, first-half, Ante Tomic scored the only goal of the match 7’ minutes into the second period to ensure United maintained their grip on third place, leaving the unfortunate Wolves lingering in tenth position.
Despite the wet and blustery conditions on the South Coast, both teams produced quality football throughout the 90’ minutes in a match that in truth could have gone either way.
The first chance of the match came after 5’ minutes when Andrew Paine, a late inclusion to the starting line up after Tynan Diaz aggravated an ankle injury in warm up, found space 20-yards from goal.
The winger’s powerful shot was too strong for Janjetovic to hold, but the United custodian was able to tip the ball wide to deny Wolves an early lead.
United had a goal disallowed after a quarter of an hour when Damon Collina’s cross was turned in by Steven Hayes, who had strayed into an offside position.
Vedran Janjetovic was called into action 5’ minutes later; reacting sharply to get a hand to Tayfun Buyokkopru’s deceiving goal-bound free kick.
The wet conditions played its role in the match, twice forcing the ball to skid away from Mark Picciolini after Lisandro Berbis and Tayfun Buyokkopru had both appeared to have put the striker in the clear. Janjetovic was on hand to intercept both opportunities to deny Picciolini on both occasions.
Mirjan Pavlovic, who proved a constant threat to the Wolves’ youthful backline, used his pace to burst past the off-balance Nick Littler on 37’ minutes only to be denied by Brody Crane who bravely challenged the striker at his feet to claim the ball.
Littler made amends for his error 2’ minutes later as he slid in to deny Hayes a golden opportunity in the box. Hayes recovered to lay the ball off for Tomic, who rushed his shot and fired well over the crossbar.
The Wolves should have grabbed the opener early in the second-half after Jacob Timpano’s defensive error put Picciolini through on goal; however the striker let United off the hook with a weak finish that was held by Janjetovic.
Luka Glavas created a great chance on 51’ minutes for the visitors as he teed up Pavlovic for a powerful shot from edge of box. The shot was spilt by Crane and cleared by Nick McInerney to deny the onrushing Hayes.
United broke the deadlock 1’ minute later when Pavlovic’s shot deflected to the unmarked Ante Tomic, who volleyed across Crane and inside the far post to open the scoring and send the partisan travelling supporters into raptures.
The Wolves were unlucky not to find an equaliser on 74’ minutes when Jason Trifiro’s short free-kick allowed Berbis space to line up a thunderous drive toward goal. The shot hit the United wall, deflecting inches wide of the post with Janjetovic stranded.
Andres Gomez should have levelled the scores for Wolves 10’ minutes from time, but scuffed his shot wide of goal from Andrew Keep’s smart low cross.
The home-side pressed forward for that elusive goal, but failed to produce a shot on goal in the closing stages as United held on for the single-goal victory after what was a very tight affair.
Wolves’ coach Trevor Morgan was obviously disappointed with the narrow victory, believing his team deserved more from the match:
“I’m very, very frustrated by the result, and I don’t believe Sydney United deserved to win,” said Morgan.
“It was a tremendously improved effort from last week. We were always in the game, and always a chance of winning the game.”
“I think we made enough chances to at least get a point, if not win it,” Morgan added.
Sydney United defender Jacob Timpano was happy to come away with the three points in his second match for his new club after signing from North Queensland Fury:
“It was a good result in tough conditions,” said Timpano.
“To get away with a win is what we wanted from today.”
Timpano is enjoying his start at United after quickly setting into his new role after his return from Townsville:
“I feel like I’ve been here all season,” said Timpano.
“They’re a good bunch of boys, so it’s been a really easy transition,” Timpano concluded.

Just 1 I think and even that isn't for sure. If West Sydney get relegated but the team that wins the Grand Final in the Super League doesn't meet the requirements set by FNSW then I'm not sure if the team in 2nd gets it or they just leave it as is.

Iv'e put a P next to the teams that i reckon could get promoted and an R for those i think will get relegated. I'd like to see both Parramatta and Granville in the NSWPL, i think Granville have done excellently over the last 2 seasons, and they're carving it up in the Waratah Cup, they should beat Blacktown Spartans FC to get through to the semis. Not been the best season for CCL, they have done alright for themselves in previous seasons. Fraser Parks pretty shithouse - when we used to play them in thw Canterbury District comp, we smashed them 5-0 one time at their home ground in Marrickville. How many spots are up for the P/R into the NSWPL?

Quote:Bonnyrigg White Eagles remained in top spot on the NSW Premier League ladder after defeating Sutherland Sharks 1-0 thanks to a wonder strike by Shane Webb mid-way through the first half at Seymour Shaw Park on a chilly Saturday evening.
Brad Boardman returned to his old stomping ground for the first time since leaving the Sharks at the end of last season and could have given the White Eagles the lead after only 4’ minutes when a rare slip by the Sharks defence on the greasy surface presented the towering striker the chance to prod home. Nathan Denham though, was off his line sharply to semi-smother the ball and the defence cleared off the line as the visitors pushed hard with Milan Zoric seeing his effort blocked away for a corner 2’ minutes later in a goalmouth scramble that also saw Boardman have another effort blocked.
Bonnyrigg were in the ascendancy early and applied plenty of pressure, but against the run of play the Sharks were almost in front when Blake Powell sent over a testing cross from a Chris Price through ball that Ben Vidaic headed powerfully toward the net only to see Ali Akbal save on the line at full stretch without spilling the ball from almost point-blank range.
Shane Webb and Jim Bakis received early talks from referee Ryan Shepherd as the hefty tackling was in danger of escalating but the official kept a tight lid on things and the match continued at a frenetic pace in heavy conditions.
It was hard and fast paced before Shane Webb finally broke the deadlock in the 25’ minute with a wonder strike from the edge of the box that left Denham no chance, which was little more than their play deserved.
Jablonski played Vidaic through with a glorious pass but the striker’s first touch was too strong and the opportunity disappeared as quickly as it was fashioned as the Sharks began to peg the White Eagles back.
Akbal dealt with the sporadic crosses from the Sharks but was powerless when Chris Price sent one over to the back stick that Jimmy Bakis hit on the half-volley back across goal straight at Vidaic who had no time to react as another chance went begging late in the half. Blake Powell then headed wide as the Sharks finished the stanza stronger although still a goal down as they headed to the change rooms at the break.
Sutherland came out firing and Bakis was unlucky to see his long-range shot tipped away, again a full stretch dive, by the impressive Akbal as Bonnyrigg found themselves on the ropes, if not exactly wobbling, with the Sharks taking their turn at applying the pressure and pinning the White Eagles back to hit on the break. With a swift ball over the top and it wasn’t long before Souris and Milorad Simonovic found themselves in the book after coming together.
Michael Brown replaced David Gullo as Bonnyrigg coach Brian Brown rang the changes as the tackles became heavier and Blake Powell entered the book for his transgression as the battle hotted up.
It was also a debut for former J-League player Kengo Takushima who was snapped up by the club during the week and he made his presence felt by earning himself a caution for a tackle.
White Eagles’ goalkeeper Akbal was forced into a fingertip save as Stavroulakis tried his luck from 25-yards out but still Sutherland couldn’t find the breakthrough they needed to reclaim parity against the table toppers. As the visitors sat deeper as the game wore on the Sharks were presented with enough decent chances to do so but after five corners in a row deep into stoppage time, Jablonski thought he had secured a point at least. In the goalmouth melee that ensued, a free-kick was awarded although moments before Ben Spruce rose high to meet a header but couldn’t put it on target before the final whistle blew.
Sharks coach Robbie Stanton said after:
“We didn’t handle the start from Bonnyrigg well and played a little too deep but they played as we expected they would and they are top of the table because of it.
“We were never outplayed tonight but it was a very competitive game and the yellow card situation could come back to haunt us a little in the next few weeks as we are getting down to bare bones in the squad with injuries, cautions and the like.
“The biggest disappointment is that we simply didn’t take our chances tonight but our slow start really did let us down tonight.
“Take nothing away from Bonnyrigg, they are a tough team and play good football.
Bonnyrigg White Eagles coach Brian Brown was humble but happy when adding:
“That was a tough game yet we didn’t expect anything else here because Sutherland are always tough to get anything from at home but the goal was typical of the ones we have been scoring lately.
“The build up play was fantastic and what can you say about a finish like that from Shane Webb?
“I told the players not to chase the game in second-half and the way the Sharks started it I wondered if I had made the right choice but at the final whistle it appears to we made the correct one because we only had the chance to train just the once this week due to the weather so I have to be happy we come away with the three points.
“I said to the guys after the match that it’s another three points closer to our goal and reminded them we need to keep our focus.”
The Grade-20 Grade match finished scoreless in a most hard fought and entertaining contest.

Quote:Round 15 of the NSW Premier League serves up an interesting Saturday evening clash as the in-form Sutherland Sharks play host to the new League leader Bonnyrigg White Eagles at Seymour Shaw.
Both teams were in scintillating form last weekend as the Sharks handed South Coast Wolves a football lesson – headed by Blake Powell, and the White Eagles knocked the Stallions off top-spot with a fine showing at home.
The clash marks a return to Seymour Shaw for both White Eagles boss Brian Brown and his assistant Cliff Pointer – both enjoyed a rather successful spell at the club – meanwhile last season’s Gold Medal winner Brad Boardman makes a return to the club he helped win the Grand Final in 2009.
Question marks have been asked of the White Eagles defensive capabilities, though the Stallions recent visit failed to prove those doubters correct as Bonnyrigg kept a clean-sheet.
The Sharks didn’t allow the Wolves to play at all at WIN Stadium, and Robbie Stanton’s team is now really playing with confidence after three consecutive wins. Defensively, the side is sound with George Souris pulling the strings nicely across the backline, meanwhile Jim Bakis and Panni Nikas have been in instrumental form in the attacking third, with Blake Powell calling the shots with his emphatic hat-trick against the Wolves last weekend.
Arguably the match of the round this weekend as the Sharks have the chance to close the gap on Bonnyrigg to three-points in case of victory on Saturday.
On Sunday afternoon, a refreshed Manly United FC play host to Rockdale City Suns at Cromer Park, the home-side coming off a ‘free weekend’ after their home match against A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers was washed out. Player/coach Craig Midgley will be hoping to see more of the same football played by his side in the defeat of Blacktown City in Round 13, a must if the side is to make a late run towards the finals series.
Rockdale City’s run this season has been marvellous, with the side turning the heads of many doubters from the start of the campaign. Mile Todorovski’s men performed admirably in the recent 0-0 draw against Blacktown City FC – where the side was forced to fend with 10-men for 40’ minutes, and perhaps deserved to win the match in the end for the chances they created. Todorovski will be asking for more of the same from his players this weekend with Dominic Hudap playing his way into some exceptional form. Hudap’s partnership with Robert Di Meglio through the centre of midfield has proven very successful, with the input of Stefan Donevski and Peter Apolevski on the left and right flanks respectively adding an additional dimension to the Suns play.
At Jensen Park Bankstown City need to make it successive victories if their ambitions of challenging for finals football are to remain alive. Peter Tsekenis’ men battled bravely against Sydney Olympic in Round 14, grinding out the win thanks largely to a stellar performance by goalkeeper Zlatko Joseski. The Lions have regularly struggled against the Berries, and will need to make home ground advantage count on Sunday. Steve Karavatakis has raised the bar for his troops since taking over as coach, with the side challenging both Bonnyirgg White Eagles and Sydney United of late, though points are still required to lift the team from the foot of the League ladder. A win for either side will provide the victorious outfit with a real shot in the arm for a strong finish to the regular season.
A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers and Marconi Stallions go into battle as the encounter between two great former NSL sides takes place at Leichhardt Oval in the ‘Italian Derby’. The Tigers have been riding an impressive wave of form in recent weeks, arguably the most consistent side in the competition over the past two-months. Caretaker coach Billy McColl has worked wonders in bringing a new attitude amongst his players, setting up this tie against the Stallions nicely, following the Stallions recent losses against South Coast Wolves and Bonnyrigg White Eagles respectively.
Marconi coughed-up top-spot last weekend – now second on goal difference to the White Eagles – though Lee Sterrey’s men will certainly prove to be an enormous test for the Tigers this weekend. The Stallions will need to be a little more astute in-front of goal, after squandering some good scoring opportunities in recent matches.
In Wollongong, South Coast Wolves face Sydney United in a must win match for both sides. Confidence was sky high for the Wolves following victories against Marconi (league) and Bankstown City (McDonald’s Cup), though the recent hiding at the hands of Sutherland Sharks has really brought the side back down to earth. Trevor Morgan’s players have a tough obstacle in the shape of Sydney United this weekend, though the Reds could be there for the taking following an inconsistent run of results of late.
David Zdrilic’s men have failed to ‘kill off’ opponents, despite creating a number of chances, a concern for the side ahead of this battle with a Wolves line-up that has troubled many of their more fancied opponents with a normally well-organised approach.
In the final match of the round, Blacktown City FC needs to ‘’snap out’ of their win-less run, dating back to the Round 11 defeat of Bankstown City, when Sydney Olympic visit Lily Homes Stadium. Blacktown step the bar in the early part of the season, though a number of injuries and a loss in form for a number of key players has seen the side slump back to fourth-spot on the ladder. Coach Aytek Genc will call upon his younger guns Joel Chianese and Travis Major to keep lifting their games – both players stars for the future. Meanwhile the experience of Tolgay Ozbey and Ante Deur will be needed to get Blacktown City back on track.
Sydney Olympic’s situation is a ‘gloomy’ one, though a victory this weekend for Andre Gumpercht’s team will certainly get the fire back into the players’ bellies. Concerns surround the fitness of Anthony Doumanis after he was forced to leave the field early last weekend, meanwhile Chris Triantis and Dimitri Petratos will need to be on their games out of midfield to get the Blues going forward. http://www.nswpl.com.au/index.php?id=554&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=3905&tx_ttnews[backPid]=537&cHash=09417a9dfd
