Fans party hard before the match
June 13, 2010
SOCCEROO fans are suffering green and gold fever on both sides of the Indian Ocean.
Ahead of the opening match with Germany in Durban on South Africa's east coast, Australian supporters have been making a splash along the city's famed beachfront, surfing, playing cricket and football or partying in the seaside bars.
Aussie fans camping at the Kingsmead cricket ground close to the Moses Mabhida Stadium are expected to walk en masse to tomorrow morning's match, which starts at 8.30pm, local time.
They will join thousands of other Australians who are flying in from other parts of South Africa.
''It will be awesome. We think there will be as many as 4000 Aussies walking to the stadium from Kingsmead alone,'' said Luke Drummond, from Canberra.
In Sydney, five World Cup tragics have settled into their armchairs in an attempt to break the 86-hour Guinness World Record for continuous TV watching. The group is only allowed five-minute breaks at the end of every hour.
